Store in your inventory and bring back to base before running out of room.
The easier of the two inputs is the Wooden Plank, which is a basic refined resource made at the Workbench from ordinary wood. Most players will already have stacks on hand from early base-building and ship-repair crafting.
The harder input is Tar, which is harvested from specific Tarwood trees that grow in the swamp biome. These trees are visually distinct from ordinary swamp trees and require an Iron Axe or better to chop. A copper or stone axe will simply fail to bring the tree down, so gating Tarred Planks behind basic iron-tier tools is intentional.
Tarred Planks are crafted at the base Workbench and do not require any upgrade to unlock. As soon as you have one Tar and one Wooden Plank in your inventory, the recipe appears in the standard Workbench interface. There is no Sawhorse prerequisite and no level gate; the recipe is available at Workbench Level 1.
Tarred Planks are one of the core resources behind every tier of ship hull in Windrose because they resist saltwater damage. A ship built with plain Wooden Planks alone would rot quickly during long archipelago crossings; the tar coating seals the wood against moisture and significantly extends hull durability. Any Shipwright or Ship Upgrades recipe list will reference Tarred Planks rather than raw Wooden Planks for the outer shell.
Plan a Tar farming trip before starting a significant ship upgrade so you do not stall mid-project. Tarwood respawns over several in-game days, so hitting the same grove repeatedly is productive as long as you give the biome time to regrow between visits.
