Overview
A Vibe is a type of personality setting in the Paramaker, determining the general impression a Parafolk makes and their outlook on life. Vibes are the primary personality system in Paralives, influencing how characters behave, what emotions they tend to experience, which Together Cards they are more likely to encounter, how quickly they develop skills, and how their relationships progress.
During character creation, players select one Vibe for each Parafolk. This initial selection serves as the character's baseline personality and cannot be changed after creation. However, through gameplay, Parafolk can evolve their Vibe by earning Personality Points, unlocking specialized versions that provide additional perks and bonuses.
Confirmed Vibes
Five Vibes are confirmed for the Early Access launch, with three additional Vibes planned for post-launch updates. Each Vibe has a distinct visual theme and icon associated with it.

Planned Post-Launch Vibes
Three additional Vibes are planned for post-launch updates. These are currently in development and are subject to change before their release.

Gameplay Effects
Vibes affect multiple interconnected gameplay systems. The specific Vibe assigned to a Parafolk shapes their experience in the following ways:
Emotions
A Parafolk's Vibe conditions which emotions they are more or less likely to feel. Different Parafolk react differently to the same events depending on their Vibe. For example, a Gloomy Parafolk might be more susceptible to sadness after a minor setback, while an Overjoyed Parafolk might shrug off the same event. The emotion system in Paralives tracks intensity levels, and a Parafolk's Vibe influences how strongly they react to triggers.
Together Cards
Vibes increase the chance of rolling certain Together Cards during social interactions. Together Cards are storytelling events that pop up after social interactions, offering the player branching choices with meaningful consequences. Some cards display an icon indicating that the card appeared because of the active Parafolk's Vibe, making the connection between personality and narrative choices explicit.
Skill Progression
The rate at which a Parafolk develops skills is influenced by their Vibe. Certain Vibes may make a Parafolk learn particular skills faster or slower, encouraging players to consider personality when choosing which activities to pursue. A Serious Parafolk, for instance, might progress more quickly in intellectual skills.
Relationships
Vibes determine the progression of relationship labels. How quickly or easily a Parafolk forms friendships, romantic connections, or rivalries is shaped by their personality. The dynamics between two Parafolk are affected by the combination of their respective Vibes, creating varied social experiences depending on personality pairings.
Walk Animations
Each Vibe has its own distinct walk and idle animations. This means that Parafolk walking around the town do not all move in the same way. An Energetic Parafolk will have a bouncy, fast-paced walk, while a Gloomy Parafolk might shuffle more slowly. These animation differences make townies and other background characters feel more natural and individual, even at a glance.
Vibe Evolution
While a Parafolk's base Vibe is permanent, the system includes an evolution mechanic that allows characters to specialize over time. As Parafolk interact with the world, complete goals, and fulfill Wants, they earn Personality Points. These points can be spent to unlock evolved versions of the Parafolk's base Vibe, which provide additional perks and bonuses on top of the original Vibe's effects.
Confirmed Evolutions
The Serious Vibe currently has the only confirmed evolution paths. A Serious Parafolk can evolve into one of two specializations:

This evolution was confirmed in the February 2024 Gameplay Overview presentation. Evolution paths for the other Vibes have not yet been announced, but the system is designed to eventually offer branching specializations for each base Vibe.
Modding Support
Vibes are fully moddable. Players and modders can create entirely new Vibes using the Paralives modding tools and share them via the Steam Workshop. This means the personality system is not limited to the eight Vibes planned by the development team; the community can expand it with custom personality types that introduce new gameplay effects, animations, and emotional tendencies.
However, the modding tools allow the creation of new individual Vibes only. It is not possible to change how the Vibe system as a whole functions using the tools provided by the developers. The underlying mechanics of how Vibes interact with emotions, Together Cards, and skill progression remain fixed, but the specific content within those systems can be extended.
Selection in the Paramaker
When creating a new Parafolk in the Paramaker, players are presented with the available Vibes and must select exactly one. The Vibe selection screen displays each option with its associated icon and visual theme, giving players an immediate sense of the personality type. At launch, the five available options are Overjoyed, Gloomy, Energetic, Serious, and Jester. Only one base Vibe can be chosen per Parafolk, and this choice cannot be reversed through normal gameplay. Evolution through Personality Points adds depth to the initial selection but does not replace it.
