Cooking System
The cooking system in Paralives is a skill-based mechanic where Paras start with basic recipes like microwaved hot dogs and frozen pizza, then unlock more complex dishes as their cooking skill improves. Food can spoil if left out, and younger lifestages can only cook under adult supervision.
Overview
Cooking is a central gameplay mechanic in Paralives that ties directly into the Needs system. Preparing and eating food is the primary way for Parafolk to satisfy their Hunger Need, making the kitchen one of the most frequently used areas in any household. The cooking system is skill-based, meaning that a Para's proficiency in the kitchen determines which recipes they can prepare and how likely they are to succeed.
Skill Progression and Recipes
Cooking ability is governed by a skill that levels up through practice. Skills in Paralives reach a maximum level of 20, and the cooking skill follows this same progression. At the lowest skill levels, Paras are limited to the simplest possible food options. Their initial repertoire consists of microwave-ready items like hot dogs and frozen pizzas, reflecting their lack of culinary experience.
As the cooking skill improves, more complex and varied recipes become available. Higher-skilled Paras can prepare elaborate dishes that go well beyond reheating frozen food. The progression is designed to feel rewarding, with each new skill level potentially unlocking access to new recipes and cooking methods.
Learning New Recipes
Every Para spawns with a random starter set of recipes. This means that two Paras created at the same time may begin with slightly different recipe lists, adding variety to each playthrough. New recipes can be learned in two ways:
Improving cooking skill: As a Para practices cooking and gains skill levels, new recipes become available in their recipe list.
Exploring town: Paras can discover new recipes by visiting locations around the town. This encourages players to send their Paras out into the world rather than keeping them at home.
Cooking Process
When a Para decides to cook, they interact with kitchen appliances such as the stove, oven, or microwave depending on the recipe. The game includes cooking animations that vary based on the recipe being prepared, with the development team integrating different cooking animations and props for different dishes. Lower-skill Paras primarily use the microwave, while higher-skill Paras gain access to the stove and oven for more involved recipes.
Certain actions in the game come with percentage-based chances of success. While the exact mechanics of cooking outcomes are still being refined, the livestream demonstration showed that skill level directly influences the quality and reliability of the cooking process. A Para with a low cooking skill attempting a complex recipe is more likely to produce a poor result than a highly skilled chef.
Group Cooking and Together Cards
Cooking in Paralives is not limited to solo activity. Paras can cook as a group, and meals can be eaten together with other household members or guests. Both group cooking and shared meals contribute to the Together Cards system. Socializing with another Para while cooking or eating fills up the Together Bar, and when that bar is full, the player receives a socialization card that helps steer the relationship in the desired direction.
Group cooking is initiated by selecting multiple Paras and assigning them to a cooking activity. The selected Paras will gather in the kitchen, chat while working, and take turns performing individual cooking actions. This makes meal preparation a social event rather than a chore, and it provides an efficient way to build relationships while also satisfying Hunger.
Food Spoilage
Paralives includes a food spoilage system. Food that is prepared and then left out on a counter or table will spoil over time. During the Live Mode livestream, a frozen pizza cooked the night before was observed to have spoiled by the next afternoon when left sitting on the counter. This suggests an approximate spoilage window of around 12 to 18 in-game hours for food stored at room temperature, though exact timers may vary by food type.
The spoilage system adds a layer of resource management to cooking. Players cannot simply prepare large batches of food and leave them out indefinitely. Meals need to be consumed in a reasonable timeframe, or the food goes to waste. This encourages more realistic household routines where Paras cook meals close to when they plan to eat them.
No Ingredient System
A distinctive feature of the Paralives cooking system is the absence of an ingredient purchasing mechanic. There is currently no system requiring players to buy or grow individual ingredients like fruits and vegetables before cooking. When a Para selects a recipe and begins cooking, the ingredients are assumed to be available. This design choice streamlines the cooking experience and removes the supply-chain management that some life simulation games require.
The developers have noted that this aspect of the cooking system could change in future updates, but for the Early Access launch, cooking does not involve ingredient sourcing.
Eating Alternatives
Not every Para needs to cook at home. Paralives provides several alternatives for satisfying Hunger outside the kitchen:
Option | Description |
|---|---|
Chez Maurice | A breakfast and lunch establishment in town where Paras can purchase premade meals for dine-in or takeout. |
Creme | A cafe that offers food and beverages. Paras can grab a quick bite for there or to-go. |
The Story Nook | A cafe with books that also serves food, combining reading and dining. |
Quick Snacks | Paras can eat quick snacks available in their home or at locations around town without needing to cook a full meal. |
Eating at restaurants and cafes provides a convenient alternative for Paras with low cooking skills or busy schedules. The food purchased at these locations satisfies Hunger immediately, and the act of dining out can itself serve as a social activity.
Vegetarian Paras
Paralives includes a vegetarian lifestyle option. During character creation in the Paramaker, players can decide whether their Para is or is not a vegetarian. This lifestyle setting influences the Para's relationship with food, including which dishes they prefer and how they react to certain meals. When modders create custom food items using the game's modding tools, they must specify whether each dish qualifies as vegetarian, ensuring compatibility with this lifestyle system.
Age Restrictions
For safety reasons, younger lifestages can only cook when supervised by an older Para. This restriction applies to actions involving dangerous tools and the stove. A Child or Preteen Para cannot independently use the kitchen to prepare a cooked meal; they need an Adult, Young Adult, or Elder present. However, younger Paras may still be able to grab snacks or use the microwave for simple items under certain conditions. This mechanic adds realism and gives adult Paras an active parenting role in the household.
Food Knowledge
Paralives features a knowledge system that works alongside individual skills. The broader "Food Knowledge" category likely encompasses cooking and related culinary activities. As a Para practices cooking, they build both their specific cooking skill and their general food-related knowledge. Higher knowledge in a subject makes it easier to learn related skills, so a Para with extensive food knowledge may pick up new culinary techniques faster than one starting from scratch. Wants can also be influenced by this system; for example, a Para may develop a want to level up their food knowledge.
Modding
The cooking system is moddable. Custom recipes can be created as feature mods entirely through the Paralives modding tools, requiring no outside software. Custom food items (the 3D dish models) are classified as asset mods and require external 3D modeling software like Blender or Maya before being imported through the in-game modding interface. When creating modded dishes, modders must define properties such as whether the food is vegetarian. This ensures that community-created content integrates properly with the existing cooking and lifestyle systems.
