Adoption

Accuracy fix: Fix math: 7 in-game days = 672 real minutes, not 576
Adoption is a family-building feature in inZOI that allows Zois to add children to their household without going through pregnancy. It was added in the v0.2.0 update on June 13, 2025, alongside Create a Child with Medical Help and non-marital birth. The stated design goal, per game director Kjun, was to "simplify the system by minimizing the required conditions" so players have more freedom in how they build families.
Adoption does not require marriage. Single Zois, unmarried couples, and same-sex couples can all adopt. The entire process is handled through the computer menu, not through a physical location in the game world.
Adoption is accessed through any computer or laptop in the household:
Click on a computer or laptop and select "General Action."
Choose "Adopt a Child" from the submenu.
Select the age of the child: Newborn, Toddler, or Child.
Click "OK" on the confirmation pop-up.
Click "Adopt" to finalize. The child immediately joins the household.
There is no adoption agency building to visit, no waiting period, and no interview process. The adoption is instant once confirmed.
Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
Age | The adopting Zoi must be a Young Adult or older. Children, Adolescents, and Teenagers cannot adopt. |
Property | The Zoi must own or reside in a property that meets minimum housing requirements. |
Household size | The household cannot exceed 8 Zois. If the household already has 8 members, adoption is blocked. |
Marriage | Not required. Single Zois can adopt. |
Cost | Adoption itself does not appear to have a Mew cost based on current documentation. |

Three age groups are available when adopting:
Age Group | Duration Before Aging Up |
|---|---|
Newborn | 1 in-game day (approximately 96 real minutes) |
Toddler | 2 in-game days (approximately 192 real minutes) |
Child | 7 in-game days (approximately 672 real minutes at the default day length) |
Teenagers cannot be adopted through the adoption menu. The only options are Newborn, Toddler, or Child. For details on caring for the youngest age groups, see Newborns and Toddlers.
The adopted child immediately appears in the household and is part of the family.
The child progresses through normal life stages (aging up from Newborn to Toddler to Child to Adolescent and beyond).
The adoption is permanent and cannot be reversed once confirmed.
Standard parenting interactions become available depending on the child's age: feeding, cleaning, playing, teaching, and socializing.
The adopted child appears in the household's family tree.
Also added in v0.2.0, Create a Child with Medical Help is a separate feature accessed through the same computer menu under "General Action." It allows a Zoi to create a child that inherits genetic traits, unlike adoption which does not involve genetics.

Detail | Description |
|---|---|
Cost | 1,000 Mew (in-game currency) |
Solo option | A single Zoi can create a child using their own genetic traits alone. |
Partner option | Two Zois (regardless of gender or marital status) can partner up. The resulting child inherits genetic traits from both parents. |
Result | A Newborn that inherits the parent(s)' facial features and physical characteristics. |
Marriage required | No. Unmarried couples and single Zois can both use this feature. |
Irreversible decision: Once adoption or Medical Help is confirmed, the family relationship cannot be undone. The game displays a "CANNOT CHANGE PREVIOUSLY SET FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS" message if a player attempts to modify family connections after the fact.
Household limit: The maximum household size of 8 Zois applies to both adoption and Medical Help. If the household is full, neither option is available.
Medical Help parentage issue: When unmarried Zois use Create a Child with Medical Help, only the Zoi who initiated the procedure is registered as the legal parent in the family tree. The consenting partner is not recognized, even though both contributed genetic traits. KRAFTON has stated this is intentional design for unmarried applicants.
Orphaned children: If both parents of an adopted child die, the child may be removed from the game rather than reassigned to another household. This has been flagged as a community concern on the official forums.
Adopting a Child (age 7 in-game days) gives the most time to develop the parent-child relationship and invest in the child's skills before they age into Adolescence.
Adopting a Newborn provides the complete childhood experience but requires immediate care (temperature monitoring, then formula feeding as a Toddler).
Medical Help is the better choice if you want the child to inherit specific physical traits from one or both parents. Adoption creates a child with randomized traits.
Both features are available regardless of the Zoi's romantic situation, making them ideal for single-parent household gameplay.
