Greymanes History
The Greymanes are a mercenary company with deep roots in the highland region of Pailune. Once one of the most respected fighting forces on the continent of Pywel, the warband was nearly wiped out in a single night by the Black Bears. Their rise, fall, and painstaking reconstruction form the emotional backbone of Crimson Desert's narrative.
Origins in Pailune
The Greymanes were founded as a Highland mercenary company in the pastoral region of Pailune, a verdant territory in the northern reaches of Pywel. Unlike many sellsword outfits that operated purely for coin, the Greymanes developed a distinct code of conduct that set them apart from ordinary mercenaries. Members swore loyalty to the company above personal gain, pledged to protect civilians in contested areas, and embraced a culture of learning through combat that produced some of the continent's most adaptable warriors.
Pailune itself was a region of rolling hills, open pastures, and scattered settlements. The Greymanes served as both a military force and a stabilizing presence in the area, keeping rival factions in check and ensuring that trade routes remained open. Over time, the company became inseparable from the land itself, with Pailune functioning as their homeland rather than just a base of operations.
Jian's Leadership
Under the command of their legendary leader Jian, the Greymanes reached the peak of their influence. Jian was a skilled tactician and a unifying figure who held the warband together through force of personality as much as martial ability. He maintained a tense but stable balance with other factions operating in Pailune and the surrounding regions, keeping the peace through a combination of diplomacy and military deterrence.
Jian fostered a sense of family within the Greymanes that went beyond the typical mercenary arrangement. Members were not simply soldiers for hire; they were brothers and sisters in arms who ate together, trained together, and defended each other without question. This bond of loyalty would prove both the company's greatest strength and, ultimately, the source of its deepest grief.
Among Jian's most trusted warriors were Kliff, Oongka, Yann, and Naira. These four formed the inner circle of the Greymane company and would become the nucleus around which the warband's eventual reconstruction would revolve.
The Night of the Ambush
The fragile balance in Pailune was shattered when the Black Bears, led by Myurdin, launched a sudden and devastating night ambush against the Greymane camp. The attack was calculated and overwhelming. The Black Bears struck without warning under cover of darkness, catching the Greymanes off guard at their most vulnerable.
Jian was killed during the assault. The Greymanes fell one by one as the Black Bears swept through their encampment. In a desperate last stand, Kliff engaged Myurdin in single combat but was critically wounded. Myurdin struck him down and threw him into a river, where Kliff was presumed dead by both friend and foe.
The few survivors scattered to the winds. With Jian gone and the warband shattered, Pailune descended into chaos as rival factions moved to fill the power vacuum left by the Greymanes' collapse. The Black Bears seized control of the region, turning the Greymanes' homeland into occupied territory.
Kliff's Survival and the Abyss
Rather than dying in the river, Kliff was mysteriously transported to the Abyss, a supernatural dimension that exists above Pywel as a realm of floating islands. He awoke at a place called the Wycliffe Mappery, a structure of alien architecture unlike anything found on the surface. Within this parallel realm, Kliff not only survived his mortal injuries but gained supernatural powers that would prove critical during his journey to rebuild the Greymanes.
The experience in the Abyss marked a turning point for Kliff. When he returned to the surface world, he was no longer just a skilled swordsman; he carried abilities drawn from the Abyss that gave him an edge against the forces arrayed against him.
Rebuilding from Hernand
After returning from the Abyss, Kliff made his way to the City of Hernand, a major settlement far from Pailune. With the Greymanes destroyed and their homeland occupied, Hernand became the unlikely staging ground for the company's reconstruction.
Kliff began by performing acts of service for the citizens of Hernand, building trust and reputation in a city where the Greymane name carried no weight. His efforts attracted the attention of Shakatu of the Goldleaf Merchant Guild, who enlisted Kliff to deal with Kailok the Hornsplitter, a criminal who had seized control of the guild through force. By eliminating Kailok and restoring order, Kliff earned the backing of both Shakatu and Marquis Serkis, the lord of Hernand.
Serkis granted the Greymanes a fief at Howling Hill, a clifftop position south of Hernand City. This became the Greymane Camp, the new headquarters from which Kliff could begin reassembling his scattered comrades and recruiting new members. The camp started as little more than a handful of tents but gradually expanded into a functioning settlement with workshops, training grounds, and living quarters.
Reuniting the Scattered Comrades
With a base established, Kliff set about the long process of tracking down surviving Greymanes who had been scattered across Pywel after the ambush. Oongka, Yann, and Naira each had to be located and reunited with the company through their own personal story arcs.
Damiane, a skilled gunsmith from Demeniss, also joined the reconstituted Greymanes during this period. Though not an original member, Damiane arrived at the camp while on the run from her homeland, and Barden Middler, the marshal of Hernand, insisted she remain with the group for her safety. She proved her worth through her proficiency with twin blades, firearms, and Abyssal magic, becoming a valued member of the warband.
Additional recruits were brought in as the camp expanded. Luke and Ronald joined as craftsmen, and other fighters were recruited through faction quests and dispatch missions. The Greymane Camp at Howling Hill grew from a ragged band of survivors into a functioning military settlement capable of projecting power across the Hernand region.
The Road Back to Pailune
Throughout the middle chapters of the story, Kliff and the Greymanes built their strength and forged alliances with other factions across Pywel. Every battle fought, every quest completed, and every recruit gained brought them one step closer to their ultimate goal: returning to Pailune and driving out the Black Bears.
In Chapter 7, titled Homecoming, Kliff finally led the Greymanes back to their ancestral homeland. The campaign to liberate Pailune culminated in the Battle at Silverwolf Mountain, where Kliff faced Myurdin in a decisive rematch. Unlike the scripted defeat in the Prologue, this encounter allowed Kliff to defeat the Black Bears' leader and avenge Jian's death.
The liberation of Pailune was not the end of the Greymanes' story, however. The events of the later chapters drew Kliff and his companions into conflicts of even greater scope, ultimately leading them to confront threats tied to the Abyss itself. But for the Greymanes as a company, reclaiming their homeland represented the fulfillment of the promise Kliff had made in the ashes of the original ambush: to rebuild what was lost and to bring their people home.

Legacy and Themes
The Greymanes' story is fundamentally about loss and rebuilding. Their fall from a respected fighting force to a scattered handful of refugees mirrors the broader devastation that factional warfare has inflicted on Pywel. Kliff's journey to reassemble the company is driven less by abstract heroism than by duty toward the comrades he considers family.
The code of conduct that defined the Greymanes under Jian persists in the rebuilt company. Even as they grow in military power, the Greymanes continue to protect civilians, honor their word, and treat their members as equals rather than expendable assets. In a continent torn apart by competing factions, this commitment to honor and loyalty is what distinguishes the Greymanes from the mercenary companies that surround them.
