Castlewood Ruins

Clarify the vine and torch route, recorded glove and cloak stat contexts and alternative acquisition, and nearby challenge notes.
The Castlewood Ruins are a relatively large and intricate series of ancient ruins located in Southern Hernand. Earlier local notes place them within the Pororin Forest guardian territory, a short distance south of the Petalton Workshop near Pororin Village. The described chest routes lead past metal bars and environmental puzzles to pieces of equipment that also have recorded Smith and named-vendor alternatives. Those records contradict the older claim that the equipment cannot be found anywhere else.

The Castlewood Ruins are notable for housing the Duskfang Leather Gloves and the Sunset Reed Leather Cloak. Both items are described in chest routes below. Their recorded stat cards, refinement curves and installed gear effects need to be kept separate rather than treated as universal base values.
The Castlewood Ruins can be found in the southern part of the Hernand region, within the Pororin Forest guardian territory. The ruins are positioned a little south of the Petalton Workshop, making them accessible once players have ventured into the Pororin Village area. The surrounding forest is patrolled by local guardians, so players should be prepared for potential encounters when traveling to the site.
An earlier note places a Sealed Abyss Artifact at the fork in the road south of Castlewood Ruins. That older note associates this artifact with taking down three enemies with regular shots; the exact fork-to-challenge identity remains unverified. The named nearby challenge route below has additional objectives.
The documented When Lightning Strikes V artifact is on the Steel Mountains road between the Ruined Chapel and Grace Manor routes. Its objectives are three regular-shot kills, three kills using Evasive Shot or Focused Evasive Shot, and three aerial-shot kills. The listed completion reward is one Abyss Artifact: use the Sealed Abyss Artifact from inventory while standing still with weapons sheathed to claim it. This named guide does not by itself prove that every older south-of-Castlewood fork note refers to the same pickup.
The Castlewood Ruins contain two chambers, each blocked by a set of metal bars. Neither chamber can be entered by force. Instead, players must solve a fire-based puzzle at each entrance to lower the bars and gain access to the treasure inside.
The first chamber is sealed behind a door blocked by metal bars. To gain entry, look for a cluster of vines growing directly to the right of the barred door. These vines conceal a torch that is the unlocking mechanism.
Stand in front of the barred door and look to the right to spot the vines.
Use the Blinding Flash skill and focus on the vines until they burn away. Earlier notes also describe fire arrows ignited at a nearby small cauldron; that alternative is not independently established by the glove guide used here.
Once the vines are destroyed, a torch is revealed behind them.
Light the torch. The metal bars blocking the door will drop.
Enter the chamber and open the treasure chest to collect the Duskfang Leather Gloves.

Earlier notes describe a second barred chamber opened by lighting two lamps. A separate cloak route instead describes lighting a brazier in front of its gate. These accounts support an environmental fire trigger, but do not independently settle the exact lamp count, ordering or timing for every current save.
Earlier route: locate the second barred entryway deeper within the ruins.
Earlier route: find two lamps flanking the entryway; the other guide describes a front-gate brazier.
Follow the visible fire interaction and check whether the bars open. The earlier simultaneous-two-lamp requirement is not independently tested here.
Enter the chamber and open the treasure chest to obtain the Sunset Reed Leather Cloak.
Two pieces of equipment can be found within the Castlewood Ruins. Both are hidden behind locked gates and require puzzle solutions to access.
Item | Type | How to Obtain | |
|---|---|---|---|
Guide card: 14 ATK, 6 DEF, Critical Rate Lv.1, Lightning Resistance Lv.1; earlier gear-bonus report HP +0.2/sec, not a verified universal intrinsic regeneration rate | Burn vines with Blinding Flash, then light the revealed torch to lower the bars | ||
Cloak (Leather) | Older guide: 2 DEF (range 2-11), Lightning Resistance Lv.3. Record: DEF 6 at +0 to 18 at +10; Stamina Cost -6% listed | Earlier two-lamp route; another cloak guide describes a brazier before the gate. Exact count/timing unresolved |
Both item records list a Smith recipe of ten Abyss Cells and any three eligible sealed Power Cores total: Gate of Collapse, Ore of Resipiscence, Casket of Illusions, Crown of Shadows or Spire of Defiance. The glove record lists Tina as a seller; the cloak record lists Ronan. These are recorded alternative acquisition references, not a guarantee of every current shop price, stock state or exact legacy map bearing.
The glove refinement record runs from Attack 10/Defense 1/Critical Rate Lv.1 at +0 to Attack 30/Defense 18/Critical Rate Lv.2 at +10. It lists Fortification I and Vitality I as installed gears, with Fortification I supplying three Defense. This does not make the guide's 14-Attack/6-Defense card a universal unmodified baseline or guarantee that every glove setup restores 0.2 Health per second. The cloak record separately runs from Defense 6 to 18 and lists Lightning Resistance Lv.3 and Stamina Cost -6%; the older 2-to-11 Defense guide remains a conflicting recorded range.
Both puzzles in the Castlewood Ruins revolve around fire-based mechanics. Unlike some of the more complex ancient ruins puzzles found elsewhere in Hernand, the Castlewood puzzles are relatively straightforward once you know what to look for.
The key to this puzzle is recognizing that the vines to the right of the barred door are destructible. The vines do not stand out visually, so many players walk past them without noticing. Use Blinding Flash to burn away the vines, then interact with the revealed torch to open the bars. The older single-cast timing and cauldron-lit fire-arrow alternative remain unverified by this written glove route; watch the vines clear rather than assume a fixed cast count.

The older dual-lamp account says both lamps must be active together, suggests no particular order and recommends quick succession if one goes out. Those exact timing and extinguishing rules are not independently tested here. The other cloak guide describes a brazier before the gate; use the actual local interaction instead of assuming a universal two-lamp timer.
Petalton Workshop: Located just north of the ruins. This workshop offers crafting services and supplies.
Pororin Village: The nearest settlement, accessible by following the forest paths west from the ruins.
Sealed Abyss Artifact: Earlier notes put this at the south fork, quote three regular-shot kills and name the reward Abyss Cores. That exact identity and reward label are unverified. The documented When Lightning Strikes V route instead has three separate shooting objectives and rewards one Abyss Artifact.
Make sure you have the Blinding Flash skill for the documented glove route. The older fire-arrow fallback remains a separate unverified alternative, not a guaranteed substitute at every entrance.
The Duskfang Leather Gloves are part of the broader Duskfang armor set. The Duskfang Leather Armor is found in the Whispering Grotto south of Senia, and the Duskfang Leather Cloak is inside a cave at Grace Estate.
The Sunset Reed Leather Cloak's Lightning Resistance Lv.3 makes it especially useful against enemies and bosses that deal lightning damage. Consider keeping it in your inventory even after upgrading to higher-defense cloaks.
Explore the area around the ruins thoroughly. A Sealed Abyss Artifact is an earlier south-fork route note; its exact challenge identity and promised Abyss Cores reward remain unverified. Use the named shooting challenge's actual objective and reward list below.
Be cautious of hostile NPCs and forest guardians patrolling the Pororin Forest territory near the ruins.
