Best Weapons Guide
March 30, 2026 at 01:05 PM
Initial version: comprehensive best weapons guide with tier list, per-type rankings, unique weapon tables, character picks, and progression advice
Crimson Desert takes a different approach to weapon balance compared to most action RPGs. Rather than having a single dominant weapon, the game is designed around carrying multiple weapons and switching between them mid-combo. Every weapon type fills a specific role, and the strongest builds combine two or three types that complement each other. That said, certain weapon categories are clearly more versatile and deal more consistent damage across all situations. This guide ranks every weapon type, highlights the strongest unique weapons in each category, and provides recommendations tailored to each of the three playable characters.
Before diving into individual picks, keep two foundational points in mind. First, two-handed weapons have five Abyss Gear slots while one-handed weapons have three. This means two-handed weapons offer significantly more build customization through Abyss Gears. Second, base attack values matter less than you might expect. The real power of a weapon comes from its Abyss Gear loadout, its refinement level, and how well it fits into your combat rotation. A weapon with lower base attack but better embedded Abyss Gears will often outperform a higher-attack weapon with empty slots.
The table below ranks every weapon type based on four criteria: adaptability across different combat scenarios, ease of use versus performance ceiling, combo flow with other weapons, and raw DPS potential against both single targets and groups. The Dagger is excluded from the tier list because it functions exclusively as a stealth elimination tool rather than a standard combat weapon.
Tier | Weapon Type | Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|---|
S+ | Universal combo extender; integrates with every weapon's moveset as a finisher or transition; available at all times | Low standalone damage; not a primary weapon on its own | |
S | Massive damage per hit; wide attack arcs; invulnerability frames on heavy attacks; strong stagger potential; 5 Abyss Gear slots | Slower attack speed; requires timing discipline | |
S | Fast and well-rounded; excellent reach for safety; knockdown crowd control; high damage accumulation; 5 Abyss Gear slots | Lower burst damage per individual hit | |
S | Supports stealth takedowns; creates distance during fights; accepts multiple projectile types with status effects; good combo repositioning | Requires ammunition; less effective at point-blank range | |
S | Built-in dodge after every shot; extends aerial combos; mobile positioning; can serve as a primary weapon | Limited range compared to Bow; smaller ammo pool | |
A | Most accessible weapon; works with offensive and defensive styles; pairs naturally with shields; lowest skill floor | Short reach limits crowd control; only 3 Abyss Gear slots | |
A | Highly mobile; riposte mechanic delivers massive damage when triggered correctly; excellent dodge-cancel options | High skill ceiling; near-perfect inputs required for full value | |
A | Only AoE firearm in the game; excels at cluster elimination; pairs naturally with melee setups for combo openers | Slow reload; limited ammo | |
B | Highest single-hit damage; impressive AoE combo potential | Punishing animation lock on missed swings; character-dependent scaling | |
B | Charged attacks launch enemies; clears space effectively; strong combo initiator | Low standalone damage despite slow speed; functions more as a setup tool | |
B | High damage per shot against large health pool targets | Extremely long reload time; very situational | |
C | Mace | Decent with a shield; some crowd control utility | Slower than Sword with less payoff; niche function covered better by other types |
Two-handed weapons are the strongest dedicated damage dealers in Crimson Desert. Their five Abyss Gear slots allow for deep build customization, and their attack values sit at the top of the stat scale. The tradeoff is that you cannot use a shield with a two-handed weapon equipped, so you rely on dodging and invulnerability frames for defense.

Frozen Anguish is widely considered the single best greatsword in the game. Its embedded Stamina Transference Abyss Gear restores stamina with every hit, which means you can sustain long combo strings without running out of breath. You can find it early by exploring the Dead Fire Mountains near the Pailune-Demeniss border and entering the Spire of Frost. Righteous Verdict is a strong alternative thanks to its high critical rate (+3) and fast attack speed (+2), making it the most balanced greatsword available.

27 | 0 | 0 | Open slots | Antumbra Ritual Grounds inside the Tomb of Frozen Souls, Argent Peaks | |

The Soul Spear has the highest base attack value (27) of any weapon in the entire game. It also carries a passive soul projectile effect that tears through groups of enemies. To get it, head to the Antumbra Ritual Grounds in the Argent Peaks northwest of Hernand. You do not need to clear the dungeon. Sprint past the Antumbra Warpriest guarding the entrance, cross the broken stone bridge, and glide down to the lit room on the lower floor. Wait for combat to disengage, then pick up the spear from the center of the room.

One-handed weapons allow you to equip a shield in your off hand, giving access to blocking, parrying, and shield-based combat skills. They have three Abyss Gear slots instead of five, which limits build depth somewhat, but the defensive trade-off is significant. One-handed weapons are the safest option for learning boss patterns and surviving tough encounters.

The Fated Shadow stands out as the best one-handed sword. With 25 base attack (the highest among all swords), it arrives at refinement level 6 and comes with the Greysoul Howling Abyss Gear already installed. Greysoul Howling adds phantom strikes to your Turning Slash, dramatically increasing DPS during combos. You can access it after defeating Goyen in Chapter 9 by travelling to the Nest of Valor in the Dry Valley using the Abyss map layer. If you prefer the Greysoul Howling ability but want to use it on a different sword, you can extract the Abyss Gear at any Witch vendor.

Daggers function exclusively as stealth elimination tools and are not used in open combat. Their extremely high critical rate (+5 across most models) reflects their role as one-shot assassination weapons. The Goblin King's Treasure Dagger is a notable early find hidden beneath the Mudridge Cabin in Pororin Forest. It comes with the Shadow Step Abyss Gear pre-installed.
Ranged weapons fill crucial support roles in Crimson Desert. They let you open fights, soften targets before engaging, and reposition during hectic encounters. Bows and pistols in particular integrate smoothly into melee combo rotations.

The Golden-Knotted Ancestral Bow is the strongest bow available, with 19 base attack and a +1 critical rate bonus. Bows in general remain relevant throughout the entire game because they accept different ammunition types that inflict various status effects. Fire arrows, poison arrows, and explosive arrows all open up tactical options that no melee weapon can replicate.
Shields pair with one-handed weapons and provide blocking, parrying, and defensive combat abilities. Shield defense value (DEF) reduces incoming damage when you block, and some shields carry bonus stats like attack speed or movement speed.

Crimson Desert features three playable characters, each with slightly different strengths. While all characters can use the same weapon types, certain weapons perform noticeably better depending on who is wielding them.
Kliff has access to the broadest weapon pool and benefits from balanced stats. He excels with one-handed swords paired with shields for a balanced offense-defense playstyle, but also performs well with greatswords and spears.
Slot | Recommended Weapon | Reason |
|---|---|---|
Primary (Melee) | Highest ATK sword (25); Greysoul Howling adds phantom strikes to combos | |
Primary (Alt) | Highest ATK greatsword (25); Stamina Transference sustains long combos | |
Secondary | Ranged safety; enables stealth; different arrow types add status effects | |
Shield | Highest DEF (8); pre-loaded with Aegis I and Fortitude I |
Damiane excels with fast, technical weapons. Her riposte bonuses reward precision combat over raw damage. The rapier is her signature weapon type.
Slot | Recommended Weapon | Reason |
|---|---|---|
Primary | Leverages Damiane's riposte bonuses and dodge mechanics for burst damage | |
Secondary | Built-in dodge after shots; extends aerial combos; mobile positioning | |
Alternative | Paired with Musket for a slower, harder-hitting vanguard approach |
Oongka's stagger bonuses reward slow, powerful strikes. Heavy weapons perform noticeably better on him compared to the other characters.
Slot | Recommended Weapon | Reason |
|---|---|---|
Primary | Maximizes raw damage output; Oongka's stagger bonuses offset the Axe's slow speed | |
Secondary (Ranged) | Crossbow / Arm Cannon | Provides AoE ranged coverage to complement melee dominance |
Starting Weapon | 18 ATK key weapon given at start of Chapter 7; solid baseline |
The weapons you have access to change significantly as you progress through the story. Here is a recommended progression path for your primary weapon.

The Hwando is one of the best early-game weapons because it comes with three embedded Abyss Gears already installed. You can find it in a side building at Lioncrest Manor without needing to defeat any bosses. If you prefer one-handed swords, the Hollow Visage from Dawn Cave is an excellent early option with balanced stats.

The number of Abyss Gear slots on a weapon determines how much you can customize its build. Here is a quick reference:
Weapon Category | Abyss Gear Slots | Examples |
|---|---|---|
Two-Handed (Greatsword, Spear, Halberd, Warhammer, Great Axe) | 5 | Frozen Anguish, Soul Spear, Ignir |
One-Handed (Sword, Rapier, Mace, Axe, Hammer) | 3 | Fated Shadow, Hollow Visage, Wolf's Fang |
Shield | 2 | Shield of Conviction, Staglord's Shield |
Ranged (Bow, Pistol, Musket, Hand Cannon) | Varies (3 to 5) | Grey Wolf Bow (5 slots), Falconne Pistol |
The five-slot advantage on two-handed weapons is one of the main reasons greatswords and spears dominate the tier list. With five slots, you can stack offensive Abyss Gears like Destruction, Insight, and Stamina Transference to create builds that are simply not possible with three-slot weapons.
Carry multiple weapon types. The game is designed around weapon switching. Pair a greatsword or spear for damage with a bow for range and a shield setup for tough bosses.
Bare Hands are not a joke. Fists weave into every weapon's moveset as combo extenders. Use them to transition between weapons seamlessly.
Refine your best weapon early. Visit a Grindstone or anvil to increase your weapon's refinement level. Each level boosts base stats significantly.
Extract and re-slot Abyss Gears. If you find a weapon with a great embedded Abyss Gear but prefer a different weapon, visit a Witch vendor to extract the gear and move it to your preferred weapon.
Weapon base stats are less important than Abyss Gears. A weapon with lower ATK but strong embedded gears will often outdamage a higher-ATK weapon with empty slots.
Explore off the beaten path. The strongest unique weapons in the game are hidden in treasure chests, caves, and optional dungeons rather than given as story rewards.
Check weapon durability. Weapons degrade with use. Repair them at blacksmiths or grindstones before heading into difficult fights.
