Gunroom Grog is a Rare consumable drink in Windrose that increases Reload Speed by 15% for 30 minutes. It is the specialist pick in the Grogs family for cannon duels, sustained gunnery, and any engagement where a faster rate of fire translates to more damage delivered at the broadside rail. It occupies the drink buff slot and stacks alongside Food and Elixirs.
Flavor text: "Rum and whiskey cut with cayenne pepper. Burns hard, keeps the blood moving, and pushes men through moments better left unremembered."

The 15% Reload Speed buff applies to ship Cannons. The buff is a flat percentage and does not stack multiplicatively with other reload sources, but it does combine additively with cannon mods and ship perks that reduce reload time. Duration extends considerably when paired with Naval Tactics: Stretch the Supply (see synergy below).
Crafted at the Alchemy Table. The recipe requires three ingredients, one of which (Whiskey) is the primary bottleneck. Stove and Pot upgrades to the Alchemy Table, if installed, improve alchemy throughput more broadly but are not required for this recipe.

Rum Bottle is the easiest of the three to acquire. It drops from human enemies, is commonly found in shipwrecks and hideout loot, and is regularly stocked by tavern and faction vendors. Most players accumulate a surplus well before they unlock the grog recipes, so this ingredient almost never gates production.
Whiskey is the limiting reagent. It is classified as Epic rarity and is described in-game as a scarce import that is prized as a trade good. Reliable sources include Brethren of the Coast camp vendors, chests and loot tables in high-tier dungeons, and occasional merchant contracts. Because each Gunroom Grog consumes two Whiskey, players who want to keep a long campaign stocked usually front-load a buying run at the Brethren camps, or designate Whiskey as a standing pick-up on any crew return trip.
Cayenne Pepper is the most flexible ingredient. In the wild, it is foraged from pepper bushes scattered across starter islands and in the foothills biome; harvesting those bushes has a chance to yield Cayenne Pepper Seeds. Once a Seedbed is unlocked (which requires defeating Thomas Richards to obtain the recipe and gathering Fertile Soil from an Ancient Farm in the foothills biome), the seeds can be planted at home base for a sustainable supply. Farming is the recommended path for any player who expects to keep Gunroom Grog as a default combat consumable.
The single strongest multiplier on every grog is Naval Tactics: Stretch the Supply. Equipped in the ship's tactics slot, it grants +30% duration to repair kit consumables and +200% duration to grog consumables, effectively tripling how long a bottle lasts. With Stretch the Supply active, a single Gunroom Grog runs for roughly 90 minutes, which is long enough to cover multiple engagements on a single voyage without re-drinking.
Because the grog effect is a flat +15% Reload Speed, tripling its duration does not change the magnitude of the buff; it only changes how many fights one bottle covers. For long expeditions (extended blockade, chain island clears, faction grinds), Stretch the Supply plus Gunroom Grog removes the need to break combat posture to re-drink between fights. For short one-off encounters, any of the five Naval Tactics may be preferable.
Only one grog can be active at a time; the drink slot is shared across the three variants. Choosing between them is a loadout decision that should match the fight type.

The general rule of thumb from the community is: Dead Eye when every shot counts and fights end in a few exchanges (burst windows), Hard when you expect to be traded hits and need survivability, Gunroom when the bottleneck is how fast your guns come back online in an extended exchange.
Gunroom Grog shines in any situation where your total damage output is limited by rate of fire rather than individual shot damage or survivability. In practice this means:
Cannon duels of roughly equal ship class (Brig vs Brig, Frigate vs Frigate, Ketch vs Ketch), where a 15% faster reload lets you squeeze an extra volley into each sail-past.
Chasing a slower target. When the enemy is trying to disengage, more shots in the window before they clear your firing arc directly increases how much hull you strip before the fight resets.
Ranged PvE on foot, including Musket and Pistol play against dungeon mobs and camp defenders. The reload speed buff applies to personal firearms as well, giving a meaningful boost to sustained ranged DPS.
Fleet engagements in a Brig or Frigate, where your broadside cycle time is the dominant factor in how quickly you can burn through a wave of smaller ships.
Extended voyages with Stretch the Supply active, so that a single bottle covers multiple fights without requiring a re-drink.
Reload Speed is not always the limiting factor. Prefer one of the other grogs in the following situations:
Boss ships and named captains: Dead Eye Grog usually outperforms, because boss hull pools are so large that raw damage per shot is more efficient than shot frequency.
Outnumbered fights or fleet patrols: Hard Grog keeps you alive through the inevitable crossfire. A 15% reload buff means nothing if your ship sinks.
Alpha-strike openers, such as ambushing an unaware target where the first volley is intended to end the fight. Reload speed only matters if the fight continues past the opening broadside.
Boarding-heavy engagements, where you expect to close and fight on deck rather than trade cannon fire. Damage or damage resistance both scale better inside boarding combat.
Gunroom Grog stacks with cannon reload modifiers. The most common synergy is with Perfectly Ordered cannons, whose Rare-tier perk grants +30% reload speed for 22 seconds after landing a hit within 4 seconds of a reload. Because that perk refreshes on every successful shot, it is very easy to maintain near-permanent uptime in a sustained fight. Gunroom Grog's +15% sits on top of that, producing a rolling rate of fire well above the ship's base cadence.
This is a large part of why Perfectly Ordered builds are so effective in mid-game and why Gunroom Grog is their natural pairing. Devastating cannon builds, which lean into stacking damage per shot rather than shot frequency, pair more naturally with Dead Eye Grog.
The Reload Speed buff also applies to personal ranged weapons, not just ship cannons. That means Gunroom Grog is a valid food-stacking option before running a dungeon or camp clear with a Reliable Musket, Reliable Pistol, or blunderbuss in hand. Players running a dedicated musket build frequently keep a Gunroom Grog buff up alongside food buffs such as stew or seafood for the combined damage, reload, and survivability benefit.
Any ship that leans on broadside volume benefits, but the buff is most visible on hulls with many guns and/or a naturally slower reload cadence:
Brig: see Brig. The default workhorse of the mid and late game. With a full broadside of 12-pounders, the reload speed buff directly converts to more hull damage per engagement.
Frigate: see Frigate. The heaviest of the three base hulls, with the largest broadside. Reload speed is the most impactful stat on a Frigate because every reduced second of reload multiplies across a large number of guns.
Ketch: see Ketch. Smaller and more maneuverable. The buff is less dramatic here because the Ketch fires fewer guns per broadside, but it still helps close out long chases where attrition matters.
Drink before the fight starts, not during. The 15% reload buff is most valuable on your opening cycle, and stopping to open the inventory mid-combat is usually not worth the loss of helm control.
Keep at least four to six bottles on the ship at all times once Whiskey supply is established. With Naval Tactics: Stretch the Supply active, that covers a full evening of play.
Do not double up grogs. Only one is active at a time, so drinking a second grog overwrites the first and wastes a bottle. Pick the right variant for the fight and commit.
Watch the duration icon in the status bar before starting a new engagement. If there are under five minutes left and the next fight will be long, top up before committing.
Pair with Food and Elixirs for full buff coverage; the drink, food, and elixir slots are separate, so a well-prepared crew can run three simultaneous buffs into every serious encounter.
