Blackbeard Waters is the open-sea region that is Blackbeard's patrol territory in Windrose. Undead Blackbeard variants of every ship class roam these seas, Black Marks objectives spawn here, and the region is the primary farming ground for naval loot in the mid-game. Every captain who intends to reach endgame will spend significant time in Blackbeard Waters, and the region is tuned to challenge a mid-tier Ketch and reward a full Brigantine or Frigate.

What Spawns Here
Blackbeard Waters hosts every undead ship variant in the launch build. Encounters scale from single-patrol Ketches in the peripheral zones to Frigate-class engagements near the core Blackbeard territories.
Spawn | Tier | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Low | Patrols the peripheral zones; can be out-gunned by a well-equipped player Ketch | |
Blackbeard Brigantine hunter | Mid | Usually escorted by one or two Ketches |
Late | Ships of the line. Most carry 24-pounder main batteries; a subset mount the 36-pounder loadout. | |
Named lieutenant ships | Scripted | A small number of Blackbeard officers patrol fixed routes and are the source of several Black Marks for Revenge Is Best Served Cold |
Undead storm spawns | Event | Appear during rough-weather events; the weather overlay can escalate an encounter with supernatural components. |
Loot and Why it Matters
Boards in Blackbeard Waters return the most reliable source of mid-tier ship materials in the live build.
Drop | Source |
|---|---|
Captain's-quarters chests on Brigantine-class targets and up | |
Frigate boards; roll from the high-rarity loot table | |
Undead crews; officers drop the Heart variant more consistently than ordinary swamp undead | |
Ship plan fragments | Blackbeard-variant hulls; feed the alternate-variant construction loop at the Wharf |
Black Marks and Thomas Richards
Blackbeard Waters is the required region for the Black Marks collection that gates the Thomas Richards boss approach. Four Black Marks are distributed across camps on the ancient-ruins island in the region and on one named ship guarded by a Blackbeard lieutenant. Handling the Marks first, then sailing back to Doctor Galen at base, unlocks the final approach to Richards's camp in the Coastal Jungle.
Navigation and Survival Tips
Bring Chain Shot on every trip. Blackbeard Waters encounters lean toward boarding over sinking, because the boards return higher-value loot than the sunk hull.
Stack Keelhold on your hull before heading into Frigate-range waters. The interrupt-immunity on Combat Repair Kit duration is the difference between surviving and sinking during prolonged volleys.
Consider Hull Bracing if you would rather raw-tank Frigate broadsides than rely on repair timing. The two approaches cover different failure modes, so pick based on whether you are sinking to burst or to attrition.
Sail with a Deadeye Grog active. The 30-minute duration usually survives a full patrol loop, and the damage boost compounds with cannon tier.
Keep an eye on the weather overlay. Storms interact with Blackbeard spawns and can bring unscheduled Frigate engagements into range before your ship is at full readiness.
Progression Role
Blackbeard Waters anchors the mid-game. A player who has finished Revenge Is Best Served Cold and is preparing for the Needle in a Haystack chain should plan a dedicated Blackbeard Waters grind session to accumulate Navigational Instruments, ship plans, and reputation materials before sailing to the Foothills temple fight with Israel Hands.
