The DNA adaptation system (referred to in-game as Adaptations, and as bio-mods in marketing materials) is a core progression mechanic in Subnautica 2. The player extracts genetic data from the moon's creatures and a class of plant-fungus organisms called Angel Combs, and applies that data to their own body to survive environments that would otherwise damage or kill them.
The system is built around the Biosampler, a handheld tool that players use to take genetic samples from creatures they encounter while exploring Zezura's biomes. As players study more of the world's fauna and collect additional samples, new adaptation options become available.
Design Philosophy
The DNA adaptation system is a core progression mechanic in Subnautica 2. The DNA adaptation system moves part of that progression inward, modifying the player character directly.

According to the game's official description: "This world is too dangerous for humans to survive... Unless you change what it means to be human." This framing positions the system as a narrative necessity, not just a gameplay upgrade path. The oceans of Zezura are presented as inhospitable to unmodified human biology, making genetic adaptation a matter of survival rather than optional enhancement.
The Steam store page further describes the mechanic: "Use your bio sampler to take samples for study. As you learn more about this world, evolve your genetics to adapt your body for survival." This confirms a progression loop tied to exploration and discovery, where studying more of the planet's life unlocks new adaptation possibilities.
How it Works
The DNA adaptation system follows a multi-step process centered on the Biosampler:
Encounter and observe: Players discover new creatures while exploring the biomes of Zezura. Each creature species carries unique genetic traits adapted to its environment.
Extract samples: Using the Biosampler, players extract genetic material from living creatures. The tool collects DNA data that can then be studied and processed.
Study and research: Collected samples are analyzed, allowing the player to learn more about the biological adaptations that Zezura's fauna have developed over time.
Adapt: Once enough is understood about a particular genetic trait, the player can apply that adaptation to their own body, gaining new abilities or enhanced survival capabilities.
the DNA adaptation system modifies the player character, not the creatures themselves. Players are the ones who change and evolve, borrowing traits from Zezura's native life forms to better survive the planet's conditions.
Confirmed Adaptations
Four Adaptations are confirmed in the Early Access launch build. Each is acquired by interacting with the central bulb of an Angel Comb organism in the relevant biome. The PDA tracks acquired Adaptations and gates progression in environments tied to each one.
Adaptation | Effect | Source |
|---|---|---|
Allows the body to withstand deep-water pressure and survive the opening Lifepod descent. | Acquired inside the colony habitat during the opening sequence, before the player escapes via Lifepod. | |
Allows the player to eat local fish and plants without taking health damage. Required before cooked food restores hunger safely at the Fabricator. | Acquired from an Angel Comb near a colonist blackbox a short distance northeast of the starting Lifepod. | |
Allows the player to read Axum glyphs and inscriptions, unlocking lore-dense underwater structures. | Acquired from the pink-bulb Angel Comb at the Sampling Pavilion. | |
Allows the player to survive the geothermal vents and superheated water in the Sulfur Pyres area. | Acquired from an Angel Comb in the Sulfur Pyres biome. |
Each Angel Comb stays active after the first interaction, so the Adaptation does not have to be re-acquired. The Adaptations interface tracks acquired and pending Adaptations, and Unknown Worlds has confirmed the 1.1 update will expand the passive Adaptation slots available to the player. See Early Access and Development Roadmap for the roadmap items affecting this system.
Potential Adaptations
While Unknown Worlds Entertainment has not released a full list of specific adaptations available in the game, the overall design intent is clear from official materials. Adaptations are meant to address the core survival challenges of living on an alien ocean world.
Based on the survival systems confirmed in Subnautica 2, adaptations could plausibly address areas such as:
Oxygen efficiency and underwater breathing duration
Underwater movement speed and mobility
Resistance to hostile creature attacks or environmental hazards
Note: Beyond the four confirmed Adaptations listed above, additional Adaptation slots and effects are planned for the 1.1 Early Access update. The directions listed in this section reflect plausible future categories and will be updated as new Adaptations ship.
Connection to the Biosampler
The Biosampler is the entry point for the entire DNA adaptation system. Without it, players cannot collect genetic samples or begin the adaptation process. The Biosampler was one of the first new tools revealed for Subnautica 2, highlighted in early promotional materials and the Dev Vlogs as a signature addition to the game's toolkit.

The tool's design also ties into the crafting and resource loop. Players must explore to find creatures, use the Biosampler to collect data, and then process that data to unlock new adaptations. This creates a progression path that rewards thorough exploration of each biome.
Origins as cut content
The concept behind the DNA adaptation system is a revisited cut concept from the studio's earlier work. During earlier development at Unknown Worlds, the studio designed a tool called the Transfuser that would have allowed players to extract and inject DNA between creatures, modifying their traits. The Transfuser was an earlier studio prototype that did not ship.
Subnautica 2 builds the DNA adaptation system out from scratch, with the Biosampler as the in-fiction tool and the DNA Adaptation menu as the player interface. The system focuses exclusively on modifying the player rather than the creatures themselves. This change narrows the scope of the mechanic while deepening its connection to the player's personal survival journey.
Role in the Narrative
The DNA adaptation system appears to be woven into the game's story as well. The ship AI guides the player through the adaptation process as part of the mission on Zezura. The narrative framing suggests that genetic modification is not just a gameplay convenience but a planned component of the mission itself, raising questions about the true nature of the expedition and the AI's directives.
