1 revisionsThe Tadpole Pens are a named in-build location and the anchor of an early Early Access story quest in Subnautica 2. The site sits in a mid-depth biome south of the player's CICADA Lifepod and contains the moored Tadpole chassis the player ultimately unlocks for traversal. The quest is anchored to a recovered blackbox belonging to the colonist Zip, whose death is referenced in adjacent recordings and ties the location into the larger Colonist Logs lore arc.
The Tadpole Pens quest is triggered by recovering the relevant blackbox in the early-game exploration radius around the Lifepod. The blackbox plays Zip's outgoing message and references a Pens site with moored Tadpole chassis. The objective list directs the player south-southwest from the Lifepod toward a sealed access door, with a keycode requirement gating final entry. Adjacent blackbox recordings from the colonist Ganzo provide context for Zip's death and explain why the Pens are abandoned at the player's arrival.
The Pens entrance sits at roughly the 310-metre depth mark. The keycode required to open the door is recovered from an associated PDA entry uncovered near the route in. Direct approach without the keycode is blocked; the door is one of a small number of named hard gates in the launch-build map, distinguishing it from the otherwise traversal-driven progression.
Step | Action | Notes |
|---|---|---|
1 | Recover Zip's blackbox in the post-Lifepod exploration radius. | Plays the outgoing message and adds the Pens to the objective list. |
2 | Equip the Wakemaker or descend via dive elevator chain. | No Tadpole is yet available for this leg. |
3 | Locate the access door at approximately 310-metre depth. | Sealed; requires keycode. |
4 | Read the associated PDA entry to obtain the keycode. | Found near the approach corridor; rotates each playthrough seed. |
5 | Enter the Pens. | Triggers the Tadpole acquisition flow. |
Inside, the player finds a maintenance bay with moored Tadpole chassis (the Scout Ray and Haul variants per the launch build) and a small block of PDA terminals that fill in the local history. The site's power is partially functional, supporting the docking bay but not the surrounding infrastructure. Recovery of the Tadpole is the primary objective; once it is unlocked, the player's long-range traversal options change substantially because the Tadpole carries oxygen reserves and depth tolerance well beyond a Wakemaker-only approach.
Beneath the Tadpole Pens is a feature referred to in launch-coverage walkthroughs as the Hot Cave: a hydrothermal pocket with elevated water temperature and ambient hazard. The Hot Cave is the route the player follows from the Pens toward the Kuraltai access point further down the depth chain. Kuraltai is referenced in early access launch coverage as a downstream location keyed to access controls the player retrieves at or near the Pens; specific entry mechanics for Kuraltai depend on the player's Adaptations progression, with Heat Tolerance heavily implicated for the Hot Cave segment.
The Tadpole Pens are in the Early Access launch build as of 2026-05-14. Recovery of the Tadpole here is the only confirmed in-build path to the vehicle. The downstream Hot Cave / Kuraltai segment is also in the live build, with launch-coverage walkthroughs documenting the full Pens-to-Kuraltai route. Future updates to the Pens, additional moored chassis variants, or new connected locations are not in the live build and have not been announced beyond the broad Early Access and Development Roadmap framing.
