Character Creation
September 21, 2026 at 06:42 AM
Replaced the placeholder starter kit line with the hedged common kit and eight-profession picker; rewrote the Sagittarii section as a removed February 2026 playtest class
Character creation in Romestead is the first decision new players make. A profession sets the bonuses a character receives at creation, and it does not limit what that character can become or gain later. You can therefore commit to a starting profession without locking yourself out of any build.
Archetype | Primary weapon | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Melee | Sword (Flint Gladius pre-boss; metal-tier post-boss) | Close-range fighter; benefits from Mars worship and the Swords / Spears skills. |
Ranged | Wooden Arcuballista (pre-boss); higher-tier bow or arcuballista (post-boss) | Distance fighter; benefits from Diana worship and the Bows / Crossbows skills. |
Magic | Scroll (Scroll of the Novice; higher-tier scrolls post-boss) | Caster; benefits from the Scrolls skill. All enemies have magic resistance after the 0.20.1_14 balance pass. |
Community documentation lists eight professions in the picker (Gladiator, Legionary, Lobber, Mechanicus, Miner, Phalanx, Scholar and Woodcutter), each with a bonus to one skill and the same civilian tunic, sandals and small stack of cooked food, plus one profession item such as a weapon, tool, shield, scroll or Workbench. The three archetypes above group those kits by starting weapon. See Class Setups for the matched-progression gear.
A crossbow-based starter class called Sagittarii was added in playtest patch 0.20.1_23 (February 2, 2026). Eight days later, playtest patch 0.20.2_2 (February 10, 2026) removed the ammo-based starter classes, and community lists of the current profession picker do not include Sagittarii. Only the Sagittarii Bow survives as a weapon.
The Plebian class was removed from character creation in demo patch 0.21.1_3 (20 February 2026). The patch note records the removal without giving a reason.
Hair and eyes: randomize buttons available; text-field fix in patch 0.20.2_1.
World seed: visible via the }worldseed chat command; randomize button available at character/world creation.
Character and world playtime: shown on the main menu since patch 0.20.1_23.
Whatever class you pick, the early game converges on the same flow: gather Flint Shards and Wood Sticks, craft a Flint Pickaxe and Flint Axe, build a Workbench, build the Altar, and start the Tutorial quest chain. See Getting Started for the first-hour path.
In co-op, the three archetypes complement each other naturally. A balanced party of one melee, one ranged, and one magic build covers all damage types and minimizes the impact of magic resistance on any single member. See Multiplayer and Co-Op.
