Character creation in Romestead is the first decision new players make. Beartwigs states that "your profession determines what bonuses your character receives upon creation. It does not limit what your character can become or gain in any way." You can therefore commit to a starting profession without locking yourself out of any build.
Class Archetypes
Archetype | Primary weapon | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Melee | Sword (Flint Gladius pre-boss; metal-tier post-boss) | Close-range fighter; benefits from Mars worship and the Swords / Spears skills. |
Ranged | Wooden Arcuballista (pre-boss); higher-tier bow or arcuballista (post-boss) | Distance fighter; benefits from Diana worship and the Bows / Crossbows skills. |
Magic | Scroll (Scroll of the Novice; higher-tier scrolls post-boss) | Caster; benefits from the Scrolls skill. All enemies have magic resistance after the 0.20.1_14 balance pass. |
All three archetypes start with the same Starter Armor Set, Common Accessory 1 and 2, and a Healing Potion. They differ in the starting weapon. See the wiki page Class Setups (linked from the wiki) for the matched-progression gear.
Sagittarii Class
A dedicated crossbow class called Sagittarii was added in patch 0.20.1_23. It starts with crossbow-aligned gear and skill bonuses. The class joined the standard Melee / Ranged / Magic three archetype lineup as a Ranged-aligned specialty.
Removed Classes
The Plebian class was removed from character creation in patch 0.21.1_3 to streamline the starter options.
Character Customization
Hair and eyes: randomize buttons available; text-field fix in patch 0.20.2_1.
World seed: visible via the }worldseed chat command; randomize button available at character/world creation.
Character and world playtime: shown on the main menu since patch 0.20.1_23.
Starting Out
Whatever class you pick, the early game converges on the same flow: gather Flint Shards and Wood Sticks, craft a Flint Pickaxe and Flint Axe, build a Workbench, build the Altar, and start the Tutorial quest chain. See Getting Started for the first-hour path.
Multiplayer Considerations
In co-op, the three archetypes complement each other naturally. A balanced party of one melee, one ranged, and one magic build covers all damage types and minimizes the impact of magic resistance on any single member. See Multiplayer and Co-op.
