Overview
The Hypervortex is a Class VII anomaly, one of the highest documented danger classes in the world of Neverness to Everness. It is the central backstory event of the game's narrative, responsible for the devastation of New Helios and the origin of all anomalies and Oddities now present in the world. The Hypervortex's appearance fundamentally altered the nature of reality across the globe, transforming an ordinary modern world into one where the supernatural is woven into everyday life.
The Disaster
The Hypervortex appeared in the sky at dusk over New Helios while citizens were preparing for an incoming torrential downpour. What arrived instead was a catastrophe described as "both magnificent and devastating." The phenomenon formed above the city and unleashed destruction on a scale that nearly destroyed all of New Helios. The official description states that citizens "never imagined that another catastrophe would arrive first," indicating that the storm was already cause for concern before the Hypervortex manifested.

Witnesses reported thick goo falling from the sky as the Hypervortex took hold. The event corrupted and maddened ordinary citizens, transforming some into unrecognizable beings. The disaster was not merely destructive in a physical sense; it warped reality itself, distorting the environment and the people caught within its area of effect. The Hypervortex's influence radiated outward from New Helios, seeding anomalous distortions across the wider world.
ETD-4 Response
Members of ETD-4 from the Bureau of Anomaly Control immediately departed from Hethereau upon detecting the Worheimer Index spike, rushing to New Helios to handle the disaster. Three members of ETD-4 are prominently featured in the opening animation responding to the event:
Operative | Element | Demeanor During Response |
|---|---|---|
Serious and tough. Focused on the tactical situation. | ||
Seductive and somewhat unhinged. Appeared to revel in the chaos. | ||
Detached from the situation. Maintained her characteristic drowsiness. |
Captain Baicang led the squad's deployment, though the opening animation primarily focuses on the three operatives above. The ETD-4 response to the Hypervortex disaster established the squad's central role in the game's narrative.
Properties and Behavior
The Hypervortex is described as "fatal to the casual observer" and a phenomenon that "lures onlookers to their doom." It has a dangerous visual property that compels people to watch it, making it particularly lethal in an urban environment where thousands of citizens could not look away. The Bureau issued a critical safety warning in connection with the event: "Remember, do NOT look at it."
Despite its catastrophic power, the Hypervortex possesses a critical and paradoxical vulnerability. If someone peers directly into its Core, identified as its Nexus, the entire anomaly collapses within minutes. The official description calls it "impossibly fragile" despite being something that "should have been unstoppable." This contradiction between its overwhelming destructive power and its structural weakness is a central thematic element of the game's lore.
Connection to Zero
The protagonist, Zero (the Appraiser), was found with no memory at the ground zero of the Hypervortex event. Zero demonstrated knowledge of the anomaly's Nexus, an understanding that no one else possessed at the time. This unique insight led to their recruitment by the Bureau of Anomaly Control and their eventual assignment to Eibon, the antique shop that serves as a base for anomaly hunters.
The circumstances of Zero's discovery raise questions that remain central to the game's ongoing narrative. How did they come to be at the epicenter of the disaster? How did they know about the Nexus? And why do they have no memory of anything before the event? These mysteries connect the player's personal story to the Hypervortex's larger significance in the world.
Origin of Anomalies and Oddities
The Hypervortex is the source of all anomalies and Oddities now present in the world. Anomalies are described as distortions in reality that range from strange to outright horrifying. They can attach to objects, entities, or locations, transforming them into negatively charged phenomena that cause destruction. The Hypervortex seeded these distortions across the globe when it manifested over New Helios.
Oddities are described as "bizarre lifeforms drawn to Earth by the Hypervortex." These supernatural beings vary enormously in form and temperament. Some resemble humans, while others take completely alien shapes. Taygedo, for example, is a soft-spoken Oddity characterized by a small human body with a television for a head featuring a dog's face inside. Many Oddities have integrated into society in Hethereau, where they queue up at the Bureau's main hall for resident permits, seeking to coexist alongside the city's human population.
Esper Emergence
Some Espers are born with their supernatural abilities, while others acquire them through training or through exposure to anomalous phenomena. Many Espers possess unique physical traits such as cat ears, horns, or distinctive skin colors, reflecting the way the Hypervortex's influence has reshaped biology itself. The line between human, Esper, and Oddity has become blurred in the post-Hypervortex world.
Opening Animation
The Hypervortex is the subject of the game's official opening animation, titled "Hypervortex Before the Storm." Released by developer Hotta Studio, the animation depicts the disaster at New Helios and the ETD-4 response in a darker, more somber tone than the game's typical bright, fast-paced open-world gameplay. The animation deliberately contrasts with the game's usual energy to establish the gravity of the event that set the entire story in motion.
The animation shows the city at dusk, citizens going about their evening routines unaware of the approaching catastrophe. As the Hypervortex forms overhead, the tone shifts dramatically. The three ETD-4 operatives (Skia, Fadia, and Lacrimosa) are shown departing from Hethereau and arriving at the scene, each reacting to the devastation according to their personality. The opening establishes the Hypervortex not just as a plot device but as a defining trauma that shaped every character and faction in the game.
Aftermath
The Hypervortex's devastation of New Helios had lasting consequences for the world. The event demonstrated that anomalies could appear at a scale far beyond what the Bureau had prepared for, leading to significant restructuring of response protocols and an expansion of the ETD's operational capacity. The Worheimer Index monitoring network was enhanced in the wake of the disaster to better detect early signs of large-scale anomalous activity.
New Helios itself bears the scars of the event. The city's recovery and the ongoing presence of anomalous residue in the area remain relevant to the game's storyline. Meanwhile, Hethereau has become a hub for anomaly hunters, Espers, and Oddities alike, all navigating a world that was fundamentally changed by a single catastrophic event at dusk.
