Dunn Smith (邓恩·史密斯) is the Captain of the Tingen Nighthawks and one of the most prominent NPCs in Lord of Mysteries. He is a Beyonder of the Sleepless Pathway and the man who brings new Beyonders into the Tingen Nighthawks under the Church of the Evernight Goddess.
The game reaches him through the past. His shipped content is a side story set before the present day, and he is one of the historical projections the Connections system can bring forward onto the battlefield. The studio's own account marked his story with an in-character tribute: 'Captain of the Tingen Nighthawks. Fearless warrior against unseen dangers. A silent guardian until the very end. Sleep well, Dunn Smith.' That framing points at the heroic sacrifice the source material gives him.
Dunn Smith is the Tingen Nighthawks Captain in the arc of the source material that the game adapts. He is described as a man in his thirties with light brown hair, a straight nose, and sharp gray eyes. He has a mild personality, is well known for a poor memory for unimportant matters, and is consistently described as kind, responsible, and quietly attentive to his team. He recruits Klein Moretti into the Nighthawks early in the source material and is Klein's first mentor in the Beyonder world.
Dunn Smith is a Sleepless Pathway Beyonder. The Sequence history below is the source material's, not a set of launch-build values; the game has not published a Sequence for him. Note that the ladder counts downward, so Sequence 7 is two rungs above Sequence 9. See Sequences.
Sequence | Title | What the source material gives it |
|---|---|---|
9 | Sleepless | Held for three years. Strengthened mental capacity, divination and ritual work, night vision, and a sleep requirement of only two to four hours |
8 | Midnight Poet | Held for nine years. Enhanced physical strength, intuition, and hazard sensing in the dark |
7 | Nightmare | His Sequence at the time of his death. Spiritual perception and combat application through dreams |
His combat power is described as not far off a Sequence 6 despite his Sequence 7 rank, the result of long tenure in the Pathway and disciplined training. See Beyonders and Mysticism and Rituals.
Historical playback: the Dunn and Daly side story, 美梦成真 (A Dream Come True), is set in the past and is one of the first pieces of optional story the launch build opens. The player Acts through it rather than watching it, switching between Dunn's viewpoint and Daly's to work a Beyonder incident from both sides, and the story ends with a birthday present Daly never got to give. Daly (戴莉) is given as a Sequence 6 necromancer mentor and, like the player, a former night watcher at the Blackthorn Security Company. See Acting Method.
Connection: Dunn is one of the projections the Connections system can draw, and official guide copy names him the pick for players who want damage in player versus player, where his projection is tied to a heavy-wound effect. See Faction Warfare and PvP.
Mentor figure: the source material makes him the captain who recruits and trains Tingen's new night watchers, and the game keeps the Nighthawks chapter under his command in the material set in his own time. The player's own hiring at Blackthorn is arranged by Leonard Mitchell rather than by Dunn, and how much of the wider mentor role reaches the player's personal line has not been published.
Sacrificial story beat: the source material's Tingen arc culminates with Dunn Smith sacrificing himself to save the city. The studio's tribute post frames that beat as a major story moment, which suggests the canonical fate is preserved.
Dunn Smith's personality is mild and steady. He projects a quiet sense of dependability rather than the aristocratic gravitas of capital-side senior officers or the militancy of the Mandated Punishers. Dialogue with him tends toward measured advice and occasional dry humour about his poor memory for routine matters.
His presence in the introductory arc is the player's anchor for the mundane, professional side of Beyonder society: not all Beyonders are aristocrats or fanatics; many are working-class professionals doing dangerous work for modest salaries. Dunn Smith embodies that framing.
The material below describes the relationship as the introductory campaign was presented before launch. The shipped detail of the Nighthawks reputation track has not been published:
Faction-specific quest unlocks tied to Tingen's Beyonder cases.
Brewing-chamber access at the Tingen Blackthorn Security office. See Potions and Ingredients.
Advancement-ritual support during the player's early Sequence ceremonies.
Dialogue-locked story beats during major Tingen-arc encounters.
Players who do not pursue the Nighthawks track still meet Dunn Smith in major Tingen story scenes, though the depth of the relationship is reduced.
