City Edit Mode is a world-level editing tool in inZOI that allows players to modify the game world beyond the boundaries of their own home lot. While Build Mode focuses on constructing and furnishing individual lots, City Edit Mode operates at a neighborhood and city scale. Players can place community lots, reshape terrain, add decorative wildlife, and customize public spaces to make each city feel uniquely their own.
City Edit Mode is accessed by pressing the M key while in Live Mode. This opens a top-down view of the current city with editing tools along the interface. The mode is available in all three cities: Dowon, Bliss Bay, and Cahaya. A separate article on Edit City covers some features in additional detail.
City Edit Mode provides several categories of tools for reshaping the world. Each tool set focuses on a different aspect of the city environment.
Players can place, move, and remove community lots throughout the city. Community lots are pre-built or player-designed venues that serve specific purposes: parks, restaurants, gyms, shops, and other public facilities. When placing a lot, the game highlights valid positions on the map and shows a footprint preview so players can see how the lot will fit into the surrounding area.
Lots can also be edited after placement. Selecting an existing community lot in City Edit Mode opens options to rotate it, relocate it to a different position, or swap it for an entirely different lot type. This gives players control over which amenities are available in each neighborhood, affecting where their Zois go for recreation, shopping, and socializing.
The terrain tools allow players to raise, lower, smooth, and paint the landscape. Elevation changes affect how hills, valleys, and flat areas look across the city. Terrain painting lets players swap ground textures between grass, dirt, sand, stone, and other surface types. These changes are purely cosmetic and do not affect gameplay mechanics like pathing or lot placement restrictions.
One of the more charming features of City Edit Mode is the ability to place decorative animals throughout the city as ambient wildlife. These animals roam the streets and parks, adding life and character to the environment. Players can choose from the following animal types:
Cats
Dogs
Pandas
Deer
Raccoons
Squirrels
Foxes
Alligators
There is a limit of 3 animal types active in the city at any given time. For each selected type, players can adjust the density slider to control how many animals of that species appear. Higher density means more frequent sightings throughout the streets and public areas. The animals are decorative only and do not interact with Zois in meaningful gameplay ways, though they contribute to the overall atmosphere.
City Edit Mode includes the option to temporarily override the current season. Players can switch the city to spring, summer, fall, or winter regardless of what the in-game calendar says. This changes the visual appearance of the world, including foliage, lighting, and weather patterns. The override is temporary; the city will eventually revert to its default seasonal cycle based on the calendar. This feature is useful for taking screenshots in a particular season or simply enjoying a preferred aesthetic for a while.
Beyond lots and terrain, City Edit Mode allows editing of public spaces such as roads, sidewalks, plazas, and park areas. Players can adjust road layouts, add or remove street furniture like benches and lampposts, and rearrange decorative elements in public parks. These changes affect the visual feel of the neighborhood and can make certain areas feel more urban, suburban, or rural depending on the player's preferences.
It is important to understand the distinction between City Edit Mode and Build Mode. Build Mode is lot-scoped: it handles everything within a single residential or commercial lot, including walls, floors, furniture, and landscaping within the lot boundaries. City Edit Mode is world-scoped: it handles everything outside individual lots, including the placement of lots themselves, terrain between lots, public infrastructure, and city-wide decorative elements.
Feature | Build Mode | City Edit Mode |
|---|---|---|
Scope | Single lot | Entire city/neighborhood |
Furniture placement | Yes | No (lot-level only) |
Terrain editing | Within lot boundaries | City-wide terrain |
Community lot placement | No | Yes |
Wildlife placement | No | Yes |
Season override | No | Yes |
Access key | B key | M key |
Use the terrain tools sparingly at first. Large elevation changes can create visual oddities around existing lots and roads.
The wildlife density slider has diminishing visual returns at the highest settings. A moderate density often looks more natural than maximum.
Season overrides are great for event screenshots but remember they will revert, so do not rely on them for permanent seasonal builds.
Community lot swaps take effect immediately. If your Zoi is currently visiting a lot you swap out, they will be sent home.
Combine City Edit Mode changes with Build Mode lot customization for a fully personalized neighborhood.
