Child Life Stage
March 31, 2026 at 07:32 PM
Initial version
The Child stage is the third life stage in inZOI, following the Toddler stage and preceding the Adolescent stage. It lasts for 7 in-game days (roughly 11.2 real-world hours at the default day length of 96 minutes). Children gain access to self-directed activities, attend school, develop four unique skills, and start building the foundation for their adult capabilities through the aptitude system.
Unlike toddlers, children can take care of many of their own basic needs and spend a large portion of each weekday at school. Their gameplay centers on skill development, completing homework, and participating in after-school activities at home or around the neighborhood. Children cannot be created directly in Create a Zoi; they must be born through pregnancy and age up naturally from the Toddler stage.
The Child stage lasts exactly 7 in-game days under the default lifespan settings. Each in-game day equals 96 real-world minutes by default, so the full childhood period takes approximately 11.2 hours of real play time. Players can adjust the in-game day length in the settings to speed up or slow down aging, and there is also an option to disable aging entirely if you prefer to keep a Zoi at the Child stage indefinitely.
For reference, here is how the Child stage fits into the broader lifespan:
Life Stage | Duration (In-Game Days) |
|---|---|
Newborn | 1 |
Toddler | 2 |
Child | 7 |
Adolescent | 6 |
Teenager | 7 |
Young Adult | 14 |
Adult | 14 |
Middle-Aged | 17 |
Senior | 17 |
When the 7 days are up, the child automatically ages into the Adolescent stage. There is no manual prompt required; the transition happens on its own at the start of a new day. The Zoi's physical appearance updates immediately to reflect the new age bracket.
Children have access to four exclusive skills that are unavailable to older Zois. These skills can only be trained during the Child and Adolescent stages. Each skill has a maximum level of 5. When a child skill reaches level 5, the Zoi earns an aptitude bonus that automatically sets one or more corresponding adult skills to level 5 when the Zoi ages into a Teenager.
Child Skill | Description | How to Increase |
|---|---|---|
Enhances imagination and creative expression. | Play instruments (synthesizer, grand piano), paint on an easel, doodle, play video games on a computer | |
Develops free movement and body control. | Use a treadmill, practice yoga on a mat, play with a ball (basketball, soccer), ride a rocking horse | |
Builds planning ability and self-directed task completion. | Clean the house, write in a journal, complete chores and homework on time | |
Improves communication and relationship-building. | Talk to classmates at school, chat with family members at home, interact with other Zois while out in the world |
In addition to these four core skills, children who have access to swimming pools or ocean beaches can develop the Aquatic Ability skill, which was added in the v0.3.0 update alongside the Island Getaway DLC. Aquatic Ability transitions into the adult Swimming skill when the child ages up.
The aptitude system is the primary long-term reward for developing child skills. When any child skill reaches its maximum of level 5, the game registers an aptitude unlock for that skill. Once the Zoi ages into the Teenager stage, all earned aptitudes take effect and the corresponding adult skills start at level 5 instead of level 1. This provides a significant head start and can save considerable time during the teenage and adult years.
Child Skill (Level 5) | Aptitude Name | Adult Skills Unlocked at Level 5 |
|---|---|---|

Motor Development Aptitude | ||
Social Aptitude | ||
Responsibility Aptitude |
Creativity is the most valuable child skill to max because it branches into four different adult skills at once. A child who reaches Creativity level 5 before aging up will begin the Teenager stage with level 5 in Performance, Media Production, Art, and Instrument simultaneously. If you are playing a family household, prioritizing child skill development during these 7 days is one of the best investments you can make for a Zoi's future.
Children are enrolled in school as soon as they enter the Child life stage. They attend classes on weekdays, and the school functions as a rabbit hole location, meaning the Zoi disappears into the building during school hours and returns home when the day ends.
While a Zoi is at school, you can click the portrait button next to their character icon to choose what the student should focus on during the school day. These focus choices direct which skills receive a boost and influence the Zoi's overall academic performance. For example, you might choose to have the child focus on social activities (boosting the Social skill) or on creative pursuits (boosting Creativity).
While students are in school, random events occasionally pop up presenting scenarios with multiple choices. A student might face a conflict with a classmate, get invited to a study group, or have to decide whether to help someone. The outcomes are often tied to the four child-specific skills. Choosing to help a classmate typically builds Social, while handling a conflict assertively may build Responsibility. Pay attention to which skill each choice reinforces if you are targeting a specific aptitude.
After each school day, young Zois receive homework assignments that appear as a task list on the left side of the screen. These tasks must be completed before the end of the day, within a window of roughly 5 to 6 hours after school ends. Homework can include written assignments, fitness tasks, and performance-related activities.
Completing homework on time and attending school regularly increases the Zoi's Academic Level. Missing deadlines or skipping classes causes the Academic Level to decline. If a student accumulates three unexcused absences, they face expulsion from the school.
Outside of school hours and homework time, children can participate in a variety of home-based and neighborhood activities that develop their skills and fulfill their needs:
Activity | Skill Developed | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Play synthesizer or grand piano | One of the fastest ways to level Creativity; each song fills a good portion of the meter | |
Paint on an easel | Becomes more effective at higher skill levels; paintings can be kept or sold later | |
Play video games on a computer | Also fulfills the Fun need | |
Doodle or draw | A casual creative activity available with basic supplies | |
Use a treadmill | Light jogging; available at home or public gyms | |
Practice yoga on a mat | A calmer alternative to the treadmill | |
Play with a ball (basketball, soccer) | Outdoor activity; also provides Fun | |
Ride a rocking horse | Child-exclusive object; particularly effective for young children | |
Clean the house | Vacuuming, tidying, and organizing count toward Responsibility | |
Write in a journal | A quiet evening activity that builds planning habits | |
Talk to family members | Everyday conversations at home build the Social skill | |
Interact with other Zois while out | Visiting public places like libraries or parks provides social opportunities |
Children still need attention and guidance from their parents or guardians, though they require less hands-on care than toddlers. The Parenting interaction tree expands during the Child stage, giving adult household members new options for shaping the child's development.
Cosleeping: Children can share a bed with a parent or guardian. This is useful for households with limited bedroom space and provides comfort to the child.
Soothing nightmares: Children can have nightmares during the night. When this happens, a parent Zoi can soothe them back to sleep.
Reprimand: Parents can reprimand a child for bad behavior, influencing the child's developing values.
Encouragement: Positive interactions between parents and children help shape the Zoi's value system. The values a child develops during this stage carry into later life stages.
The relationship quality between parent and child matters. Children who receive consistent positive attention develop stronger relationships with their parents, which influences their overall well-being and can affect which traits and values they carry into adolescence and beyond.
Children have several restrictions compared to older Zois. Many features remain locked until the Young Adult stage, when all gameplay systems become fully available.
Restriction | Details |
|---|---|
No jobs or careers | Children cannot apply for or hold any career. Employment is available starting from the Young Adult stage. |
No romantic interactions | Children cannot flirt, date, or engage in any romantic activity. Romance unlocks at the Young Adult stage. |
No cooking | Children cannot prepare meals on their own. They rely on adult household members for food, or they can eat snacks and pre-made items. |
Limited travel | Children can visit public locations but have fewer autonomous actions available compared to teenagers and adults. |
Cannot drown | Unlike teenagers and older Zois, children are protected from drowning in pools and open water. |
Cannot die | Children cannot die from any cause. If their needs become critically low, the Child Protection Agency intervenes instead (see below). |
InZOI includes a Child Protection Agency system that acts as a safety net for neglected children. If a child Zoi's needs drop to critically low levels across multiple categories, the Child Protection Agency will intervene and remove the child from the household. The child is taken away permanently, and the remaining household members may experience sadness from the loss.
This system replaces the possibility of child death entirely. No matter how badly a child is neglected, they will never die; they will be removed from the household instead. This is an important distinction from older Zois, who can experience death through various causes. The takeaway is straightforward: keep your child's needs in decent shape to avoid losing them.
After 7 in-game days, the child automatically transitions into the Adolescent stage, which covers the equivalent of ages 11 to 15 and lasts for 6 in-game days. The transition happens at the start of a new day without any player input. The Zoi's physical size and appearance change immediately to match the new life stage.
At the moment of aging up, any aptitude bonuses earned from maxed child skills take effect. If the child reached level 5 in Creativity, for example, the new adolescent will begin with level 5 in Performance, Media Production, Art, and Instrument. Adolescents continue attending school and completing homework, and the child-specific skills remain available for further development during the Adolescent stage as well.
The child and adolescent stages share many of the same gameplay mechanics. The key differences are that adolescents are physically larger, have access to a few more social interactions, and are one step closer to the Teenager stage where additional features begin to unlock.
Prioritize Creativity: Since it converts into four adult skills at once, Creativity offers the biggest return on investment. Have the child practice instruments or paint whenever free time allows.
Use school focus wisely: Match the school focus choice to whichever skill you want to develop the fastest. Rotate focus choices across different days to balance all four skills if you want multiple aptitudes.
Complete homework promptly: Finishing homework early frees up the rest of the evening for skill-building activities. It also keeps the Academic Level high, which prevents negative consequences like expulsion.
Watch for school events: Random school events offer skill boosts tied to specific choices. Read each scenario carefully and pick the option that aligns with your target aptitude.
Balance needs and skills: Do not neglect the child's basic needs (Energy, Hunger, Hygiene, Fun) while chasing skill levels. A child with low needs performs worse at school and at home activities. Keep needs in the green to maintain steady skill gains.
Use the rocking horse: The rocking horse is a child-exclusive object that is particularly effective for building Motor Development. Place one in the household if you want to max this skill quickly.
