Cai Castor is one of the four Heroes of Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave and the lead of the Fox route. He is fifteen, the youngest of the core cast, and comes from the peaceful village of Ribeira. On his fifteenth birthday his father is imprisoned beneath Dagsion for crimes committed, and Cai sets out with his childhood friends to win the Heroic Games and free him. His stated motive in the game is blunt: "I only wanna fight so I can save my father's life."

Like the other three Heroes, Cai's story takes place five years before the collapse that opens the game, and Eshmel can travel back into it to change how it ends. See Routes for how the four branches relate to one another.

Story

Cai grows up in Ribeira with his father and his childhood friends. Nintendo's route synopsis has the household visited by a temple knight who has come to tell Cai's father it is time to face punishment for crimes committed before Cai was born. That knight is Centurio, a Vulcan of the Aurora temple and an old friend of Castor, and preview material describes him as carrying mixed feelings about Cai later qualifying for the Games.

With his father held beneath Dagsion and facing execution, Cai enters the Heroic Games in the hope of restoring a peaceful life for his family. The Games grant one wish to the winner, declared by Solel, the Divine Sovereign, which is what makes a village boy's entry rational rather than desperate.

Cai's mother is absent rather than merely unnamed. In-game dialogue makes the point twice over. Castor tells him "Cai... Please... Look after your mother", and elsewhere Cai says "It just seems so normal to me to not have a mom", to which Castor answers "Yeah, you've never known her." Preview material describes his father as a former Vulcan of one of Dagsion's temples who personally trained Cai in combat, and who appears as a guest unit early in the route.

Ribeira Winds

Every group entering the Heroic Games registers under a clan name. Cai's is the Ribeira Winds. His two childhood friends start with him and the group is filled out shortly afterwards.

Before the group passes the entry test, preview material refers to them by an earlier name, the Children of Ribeira. See Factions for the other clans contesting the tournament.

Combat and Blaze Art

Cai starts as a Commoner, the shared starting class that can wield every weapon type, and preview footage shows him specialising in the spear and riding a flying ostrich-like mount as an Ornius Rider. Spears deal heavy damage to cavalry, which fits a unit expected to close distance quickly. Certification Exams govern how he moves into other classes.

His Blaze Art is described on camera in the Direct: "Cai releases a burst of otherworldly power from his hand to cast flames in a wide area." Hands-on accounts describe it as an area attack of netherworld flame cast from his palm, dealing burn damage. The Japanese name loosely renders as Netherflame, though that is a translation of the Japanese rather than a published English name, and preview footage shows more than one named art in his set as the route progresses.

Preview material traces that power to a gem embedded in his left palm, described as being of unknown nature and as appearing on the same day his father is arrested. One of the Nintendo Today panels for the game pans across his stock artwork to that hand.

Combat forecasts in preview footage show Cai carrying a Crest from the very start of his route, and the game gives Crests a second Dagdan name; his is reported as the Diadem of Duality. No Crest effect data has been published for this game, so nothing is written here about what it does.

Blaze Arts cost health, not a resource bar. Using them fills a gauge that grants a stat boost as it rises, and filling it entirely triggers a burst that halves that unit's HP for the rest of that battle. On the Fox Route

Each of the four Heroes unlocks hub and world-map options nobody else has. Cai's is animal handling: on the world map he captures mountable animals and learns Mounted Abilities from them, and his route adds a stable in Dagsion where those animals can be fed, renamed and cared for. Preview accounts note that mounts must be befriended before their riding skills activate.

Cai also crosses the other Heroes as an opponent. Preview material places Theodora and Leda as bosses inside his route, and Cai himself as a boss inside theirs, which is consistent with the routes being alternate versions of the same tournament rather than one shared timeline. In the game's opening he appears among the risen dead fought as tutorial bosses, in a different class from his playable one.

Notes

Cai's listed likes are moving his body and catching animals, which lines up with both his mount specialisation and his route's stable. Being fifteen also restricts him at the hub: preview accounts note he is underage and cannot enter taverns.

His surname is the same as his father's given name, so Cai Castor and Castor are two separate characters, not one. Route listings give his Part I subtitle as "Cai, Hell's-Eye", and the ten-track advance soundtrack release includes a piece titled "True to His Colors" attached to him; see Soundtrack.

The name is pronounced to rhyme with "sky". Japanese renders it カイ カストール, Korean 카이 and Traditional Chinese 凱伊.
