Playable Characters
February 10, 2026 at 01:15 AM
Expanded with confirmed traversal differences, additional weapon details for Damiane and Oongka, Greymanes lore, and world region context
Crimson Desert has three playable characters. There is no character creation system and no class system. Playstyle variety comes from weapon choice, skill progression, and elemental enhancements. Kliff Macduff is the protagonist and the only character who can progress the main story. Two additional characters unlock through the campaign and can be freely switched to for open-world exploration and side content.
Will Powers of Pearl Abyss confirmed in his January 2026 XboxEra interview: "Later on in the game, as a video we released this week shows, there are multiple playable characters that you can play as at certain points within the plot." The Features Overview #1 trailer (January 29, 2026) revealed them for the first time. All three belong to or are allied with the Greymanes mercenary band.
Character progression is independent. Each character maintains their own equipment, skill builds, and ability upgrades. If you spend time upgrading Kliff's weapons and ignore Oongka's gear, Oongka will be weaker when you switch to him.
Kliff Macduff is the main protagonist, son of Martinus, and captain of the Greymanes. He was introduced at G-STAR 2019 as "Macduff, son of Martinus." Recent marketing uses "Kliff" as his primary name.
The Greymanes' previous leader, Gian, unified the northern region of Pailune and maintained peace. Then the Drunken Black Bears, a rival faction led by Myurdin, ambushed and killed him. The attack scattered the Greymanes across the continent. Kliff starts the game at his lowest: his comrades are dead or scattered, he has barely any abilities, and he has to rebuild from nothing.
Will Powers described the Greymanes as "the good guys... they want to help people. They want to defend, and unfortunately, they got their butts beat pretty bad before you start playing the game."
Kliff is the most versatile of the three playable characters. He has access to the widest range of melee weapons (sword and shield, greatsword, spear, dual blades, axes, longsword, pitchfork) and ranged weapons (bow with multiple arrow types, musket). He can also fight bare-handed, grapple enemies, suplex them, and use the environment as a weapon. He can chain a greatsword swing into a bare-fisted grapple, then pull out a spear, all in one combo.
His signature tool is the Axiom Bracelet, a magical artifact that grants elemental infusion (fire, ice, lightning) across all attacks and abilities. Kliff has no innate magical ability; the bracelet is the source of his elemental power. He can imbue melee strikes, arrows, and abilities like Force Palm with any of the three elements via a selection wheel. See Weapons & Equipment for the full weapon breakdown.
Force Palm — An energy shove that doubles as a launch tool. Can be infused with fire, ice, or lightning. A fire-infused Force Palm shoves an enemy and sets them alight. Can be fired at the ground to launch Kliff into the air for aerial combos.
Axiom Force — A mobility repositioning move for strategic movement in both exploration and combat.
Crow's Wing — Gliding via raven-wing cloak, granted by White Crow the Witch after visiting the Abyss. Used for traversal across large distances. Kliff is the only playable character with this specific ability.
Precision Focus — Slow-motion arrow shots while diving sideways. A ranged combat skill.
Artillery Whistling Arrows — Calling in allied cannon bombardment on a targeted area. Can destroy structures.
Grappling Hook — Used to latch onto structures, swing between ledges, chain mid-air jumps, and dive into enemy groups.
Wrestling moves — Suplexes, chokeslams, angle slams, giant swings, DDTs, and hammer throws. Activated by holding two face buttons plus directional input.
Kliff levels through Abyss Fragments (stat boosts and skill unlocks), equipment upgrades at the Blacksmith, and world-observed techniques. Some skills can only be learned by watching someone else perform them. Boss equipment drops grant the defeated boss's signature ability. See Skill Trees and Artifacts for the full progression system. Stat resets are available for respecification.
Damiane is the second playable character, a swift female warrior who joins through story progression. The name comes from GamingTrend's coverage.
Regal outfit featuring a white cape, gold gauntlets, gold pauldrons, and a gold headpiece. Alternative black outfit variants have also been shown in trailers.
Primary: Two-handed claymore — Powerful sweeping melee attacks with wide arcs. Hits hard but commits to the swing.
Secondary: Rapier with buckler — A faster, more precise weapon combination for quick-step attacks and speedier hits. Gives Damiane a dual-style combat approach.
Ranged: Flintlock pistol — Quick shots at close-to-mid range for finishing off weakened enemies or keeping distance.
Ranged: Musket — Longer range fire with enhanced damage after a charge delay.
Multiple previews described her as "incredibly agile," providing "a faster, more versatile alternative for players who prefer speed and mobility." She can quick-step around enemies while picking them off at range. Push Square reported she can "cast down magic from the sky," though the exact mechanic has not been detailed.
Her signature combo involves a spinning kick that transitions into an Izuna Drop (an aerial grab into a plummeting slam). She has her own skill tree, separate from Kliff's. Her progression is independent.
Damiane has a propeller gadget for gliding. Unlike Kliff's Crow's Wing (wraith-like wings), Damiane's propeller can spin faster to achieve true flight, making her traversal distinct.
Oongka is the third playable character, a heavy bruiser clad in heavy armor. He is one of Kliff's core Greymane companions, described as having "fierce combat skills and unwavering loyalty to Kliff." He is encountered during the Calphade chapter, fighting rebels alongside Marquis Stefan Lanford.
Primary: Massive greataxe — Devastating ground slams, spinning attacks, and area-of-effect crowd control. Raw power over finesse.
Secondary: Large hammer — Charged swings send multiple foes flying, can knock enemies into each other.
Ranged: Wrist-mounted crossbow — Fires incendiary bolts. GamingBolt mentioned "John Woo-style slow-mo aiming."
Ranged: Hand cannon — GamingTrend's alternative description. Barret-like arm cannon for ranged destruction.
Oongka focuses on area-of-effect damage and crowd control. He can punch and kick in addition to axe combat. He can perform body slams and leap-slam attacks. He also carries a pickaxe for mining crystals, suggesting resource gathering gameplay.
Described as a "Barbarian" archetype: an imposing warrior who embodies raw destructive power and specializes in breaking enemy lines and reducing fortifications to rubble. Like Damiane, he has his own separate skill tree and independent progression.
Both Damiane and Oongka unlock through main story progression. You meet them during Kliff's campaign and recruit them into the party. Once unlocked, you can freely switch to either character at any time.
The key restriction: you cannot progress the main story as anyone other than Kliff. The main campaign is Kliff-only. Damiane and Oongka are available for open-world exploration, side quests, commissions, and optional activities. This matters because Will Powers described the main story as "a very small percentage of total content." The vast majority of the game is the open world, and all three characters have full access to it.
All three characters can be customized with different clothing and hairstyles. There is no full character creation in single-player (multiplayer does allow it).
Kliff — Jack-of-all-trades. Most weapons, most abilities, elemental magic via the Axiom Bracelet. Environmental kills, artillery summons, grappling. The only character who can ride the late-game mech and use Crow's Wing gliding.
Damiane — Speed and agility. Claymore + rapier with buckler + pistol/musket. Quick-step dodging, ranged picking, aerial magic, spinning kick combos. Propeller gadget for flight traversal. Best for players who prefer fast, mobile combat.
Oongka — Heavy crowd control. Greataxe + hammer + crossbow/cannon. Area-of-effect ground slams, brute force. Body slams and leap-slams. Best for players who want to hit everything at once.
The Greymanes are the mercenary band at the center of the story. Pearl Abyss described the members as Kliff's "family in all but name." Their fates are "deeply intertwined with the decisions that Kliff, and by extension the player, makes."
The Greymanes originated from the northern region of Pailune and were renowned for their skill, loyalty, and commitment to peace and unity. They served under the great leader Gian, who unified the region and brought peace. After Gian's death, the land was plunged into chaos and a bloody conflict erupted between the Greymanes and the Black Bears.
Gian — Former leader. Unified Pailune and maintained peace. Killed in the Black Bears' ambush before the game begins. His mission to protect the Library of Providence falls to Kliff. Alustin reveals that stopping the chaos threatening the Abyss was once Gian's mission.
Kliff Macduff — Current captain. Main protagonist.
Oongka — Core companion. Fierce warrior with unwavering loyalty. Found during the Calphade chapter. Becomes the third playable character.
Yann — Core companion. "Resourceful and cunning." Navigates complex political landscapes and provides strategic insights. Sharp mind and quick thinking. Provides diplomatic solutions. Gets kicked off a cliff during one combat sequence, per Fextralife.
Naira — Core companion. Skilled warrior known for combat versatility and willingness to take on the most dangerous missions. Courageous and adaptable to any situation.
Marius — Veteran Greymane. Encountered with a severely injured leg early in the story.
Players must travel the world to find battle-hardened fighters to rebuild the Greymanes. Every mercenary encountered has their own story and unique reasons for choosing the mercenary path. Players must earn their respect to recruit them.
Myurdin — Leader of the Drunken Black Bears. Orchestrated the ambush that destroyed the Greymanes. Primary antagonist. Fought as a boss early in the game.
Cassius Morten — Former subordinate of Marquis Stefan Lanford who allied with the Black Bears and sparked the Calphade rebellion. Boss fight uses heavy mace and shield. Can be killed via environmental interaction (pillar collapse).
Marquis Stefan Lanford — Lord of Calphade, ally to the Greymanes. Under siege during the Calphade chapter.
Barden Middler — Central figure in Calphade who convinces Kliff to join the fight, having seen him fight before.
Alustin — An alchemist and keeper of the Library of Providence, a realm where "every book is a world." Reveals that beings plan to bring "everything to nothingness." Also a character in Black Desert Online lore.
White Crow — A guardian of the Abyss clad in white. Grants Kliff the Crow's Wing gliding ability. Ally of Alustin.
Hubert — A healer whom survivors send Kliff to find. Heavily guarded by goblins.
King Demeniss — The "Unifier of Lands" who has fallen into a coma, creating a power vacuum across Pywel. Those who suffered under his iron rule seek to exploit his weakness.
Defeating bosses can reward their weapon or armor set. Equipping boss gear grants the ability to use that boss's signature skill. Will Powers clarified: "There aren't uniform swaths in terms of if you kill a boss, you absorb their ability. This isn't Mega Man. However, certain bosses, you get their weapons. Certain bosses, you get their abilities. Certain bosses, you get their armor." See Boss Battles for encounter details and Boss Strategies for fight guides.
Confirmed bosses:
Myurdin — Initial boss. Straightforward melee combat.
Cassius Morten — Multi-phase fight with mace and shield.
Matthias — Soldier boss with heavy charge attacks and running kicks. Multi-phase.
Staglord — A fallen king in forgotten ruins. Sword and shield. Too large for grapple moves.
Reed Devil — Masked outcast from the slums of Hernand. Iaijutsu (quick-draw sword) fighting style. Fought in wheat fields.
Hexe Marie — A witch who splits into crows and summons pot-headed automatons.
Queen Stoneback Crab — Colossal creature disguised as a boulder. Shadow-of-the-Colossus-style climbing required. Kliff's ally Diederik triggers the fight by trying to mine it.
White Horn — Massive creature boss.
Fontaine Cursed Knight — Confirmed boss, limited details.
Golden Star — A colossal mechanical dragon. Multi-phase fight in an abandoned keep. Uses flaming breath, EMP pylons, and requires strategic use of lightning arrows or cannon fire.
All playable characters have access to mounts. Confirmed rideable creatures include horses, grizzly bears (with maul attacks), raptors, wolves, and fire-breathing dragons (time-limited). The late-game battle mech from Delesyia has a machine gun, lock-on missiles, jump jets, and EMP blast. It is fuel-limited and appears to be Kliff-exclusive.
The three playable characters explore the continent of Pywel, which contains five major regions plus sub-areas:
Pailune — The Greymanes' homeland in the north. Autumn landscape with gold and crimson leaves. Currently under Black Bears occupation.
Hernand — Starting region. Towering mountains, rivers, quaint villages.
Demeniss — Political and military center. Grand castles and disciplined armies.
Delesyia — Technological hub. Ancient alchemy meets cutting-edge engineering. Origin of mechs.
The Crimson Desert — A vast, lawless expanse of crimson sands with ancient ruins and a desert cult.
