Playable Characters

Full rewrite with detailed abilities per character, switching mechanics, and independent progression
Crimson Desert has three confirmed playable characters. Each has a distinct weapon loadout, fighting style, and personality. You can swap between them in the open world after recruiting them through the story.
Character progression is independent. Each character maintains their own equipment, skill builds, and ability upgrades. Swapping to a different character means working with that character's gear and abilities, not a shared pool.
Kliff is the main protagonist and leader of the Greymanes. He is a versatile fighter and the only character with access to the Axiom Bracelet, which grants elemental abilities (fire, ice, lightning).
Kliff can use every weapon type in the game. Sword and shield, greatsword, spear, axe, dual blades, bow, arquebus. He is not locked to any loadout. This flexibility is the core of his design. He can chain a greatsword swing into a bare-fisted grapple, then pull out a spear, all in one combo.
Force Palm — A shove that can be infused with elements via the Axiom Bracelet. A fire-infused Force Palm shoves an enemy and sets them alight. Gaming Trend specifically called this out during their hands-on preview.
Crow Wings — A glider ability granted by White Crow the Witch after visiting the Abyss. Used for traversal across large distances and descending from Abyss Islands.
Grappling and wrestling — Suplexes, chokeslams, and hammer throws. GuruGamer says these activate by holding two face buttons plus a directional input. Kliff can grapple enemies, throw them into walls, and pull mounted riders off their horses.
Elemental infusion — The Axiom Bracelet offers a selection wheel with fire, lightning, and ice. Weapons and abilities gain elemental properties when infused. See Elemental Effects for the full breakdown.
Damiane wields a claymore (a greatsword variant) as her primary weapon and carries a flintlock pistol as a sidearm. GamingBolt introduced her alongside Oongka as one of "two new playable characters" shown in later previews.
Her fighting style is aggressive and momentum-based. The claymore delivers wide, sweeping attacks that hit multiple enemies. Between sword swings, she fires the flintlock for quick follow-up damage. The combination makes her effective at close-to-mid range.
Damiane is not just a combat character. She has her own personality and story arc within the Greymanes. She joins Kliff during the reunion journey across Pywel and becomes playable after a story event.
Oongka is one of Kliff's closest companions. He uses an axe as his primary weapon, paired with a wrist-mounted crossbow for ranged attacks.
The axe delivers high single-target damage with staggering cleaves, ground slams, and spinning attacks. Oongka is a power-focused character compared to Kliff's versatility or Damiane's momentum.
GamingBolt describes Oongka's crossbow as firing "incendiary shots" with a slow-motion aiming sequence. Gaming Trend called it a "hand cannon." The combination of raw melee power and explosive ranged damage makes Oongka the most straightforward damage dealer of the three.
After recruiting a character through the story, you can swap to them in the open world. Switching is not limited to specific locations or rest points. You swap freely while exploring.
Each character keeps their own equipment loadout and skill progression. If you spend time upgrading Kliff's weapons and ignore Oongka's gear, Oongka will be weaker when you switch to him. This creates an incentive to invest in all three characters if you want full flexibility.
Producer Will Powers has said that character growth comes from gear and abilities, not XP bars. See Weapons & Equipment and Skill Trees for how progression works.
The Greymanes have many members besides the three playable characters. Yann, Naira, Marius, Hubert, and Diederik all appear in the story and fight alongside Kliff in scripted sequences. Whether additional characters become playable has not been confirmed. Will Powers mentioned there are "more" things he could not reveal, but no fourth playable character has been announced. See The Greymanes for the full roster.
