Removed unsupported demo capture lengths in favour of session lengths, added Oath Reforged checkpoints, stagger and Burst detail, recorded the bow versus knight traversal conflict and the unsettled wording of the voice-over role, trimmed the description and removed two duplicate body links
Gwendolyn is the sole playable character and protagonist of Tides of Annihilation, the Arthurian action-adventure developed by Eclipse Glow Games. She is the lone survivor of an otherworldly invasion that fractures modern-day London, and the only known person capable of wielding the mysterious gray fog, a power that lets her summon and command the spectral forms of the Knights of the Round Table. Her personal quest drives the entire campaign: find the Holy Grail, save her sister, restore the shattered world, and take vengeance on the demi-gods of Avalon who destroyed the city she called home.
In Chinese-language material the studio renders her name as 格雯德琳.
The first story trailer, shown on 25 August 2026 under the title "Beneath the Veil", filled in where her power comes from. The studio's account is that Gwendolyn mysteriously inherits the mystical power of King Arthur, and that the fog is a power only Arthur once wielded. The trailer finds her amid the ash of a ruined London, shaken by what has happened to her, until Guinevere urges her to take hold of that power and use it to save both London and Avalon. She takes up the sword, and the same trailer is the first appearance of Sir Lancelot among the knights she can summon.
The game opens in the aftermath of a catastrophic event. Avalon, the mythic realm of Arthurian legend, has folded itself onto the real world, and London is the epicenter of the incursion. Colossal invaders and lesser horrors have poured out of the breach, killing most of the city's inhabitants in a single wave. Gwendolyn is the only survivor the story introduces, and the gray fog she can draw on is presented as the force that kept her alive when nothing else should have.
Her journey follows a quest to find the Holy Grail: a relic tied to the Arthurian cycle that the story treats as the key to undoing the catastrophe. To reach it, Gwendolyn has to cross back and forth between the ruined, invasion-fractured streets of London and the mystical realm of Avalon, fighting her way through its demi-gods and reclaiming pieces of the world along the way. The Arthurian legend in Tides of Annihilation supplies the cast, the locations and the concepts, and the game reinterprets them rather than retelling them: the studio has said it is not copying the legend one to one. Gwendolyn is positioned as a modern-day successor to the Round Table's heroes.
Gwendolyn's master is Guan Yu, the Chinese general and Sage of War, and he teaches the opening tutorial in the playable demo: basic attacks, charge attacks, and how to summon and use her knights. That is a genuinely unexpected pairing in a game built on the Round Table, and it is deliberate. The demo is set inside the Great Russell Museum, a building with Egyptian, Japanese and Chinese wings, and the developers have said the world mixes several mythologies rather than adapting the Arthurian corpus alone. The producer has described the figure as a representative of an Eastern knightly ideal, which is the bridge between him and a protagonist who fights with Arthurian champions. English-language material from the August 2026 build renders his title rather than his name, calling the tutorial trainer the Martial Saint, and official art captions the same figure as Guan Yu.
He also sets her an optional job in the demo, asking her to purge an evil spirit, which leads to the boss Geraint in the Japanese wing. His weapon, the Green Dragon Crescent Blade, is his own and not something Gwendolyn equips.
Gwendolyn's motivation is personal before it is heroic. Her sister was among the victims of the invasion, and rescuing her is the thread that pulls Gwendolyn forward through every encounter. The August 2026 demo named that sister for the first time: Lizzie, a history enthusiast who knows the museum the demo is set in. Whether the name carries any further weight has not been established. The developers describe Gwendolyn's goal as threefold, and each strand feeds into the next:
Save her sister, the emotional anchor of the main story.
Restore the shattered world, stitching Avalon and London back apart and undoing the collapse.
Take vengeance on the demi-gods of Avalon who orchestrated the invasion.
Collecting Grail Shards scattered across both realms is the practical means through which all three objectives can be accomplished. Each shard brings her closer to completing the Holy Grail, and by extension to the only power capable of rolling back the catastrophe.
Gwendolyn's base design has drawn a lot of attention in pre-release coverage, with her look described as striking and strongly stylized. The player can customize her outward appearance through collectible outfits, hair styles, and makeup options unlocked over the course of the game, and the game groups her themed outfits under a system called Regalia. Costumes turn up as rewards for optional side content, and swapping equipment or an outfit plays its own transition animation rather than happening silently in a menu.
Outfits are the cosmetic layer, and they should not be confused with her gear. Weapons and armour carry real affixes: the August 2026 build included a sword with lifesteal, a weapon that raised airborne attack power, and armour that cut the damage taken while airborne. On top of that sits a badge system with a capped number of slots, so building a loadout is a question of what to give up. Badges can carry drawbacks as well as benefits, and one of them granted a mid-battle self-revive at the cost of disabling healing flasks entirely. The developers have described the game as having levels and skill trees while deliberately keeping them light, and the August build bore that out: progression there read as a growing health bar plus a widening set of equipment and badge combinations rather than as rising stat numbers. See Skill Tree and Progression.
Gwendolyn's face became a talking point after the Chengdu hands-on in August 2026, where the build was shown publicly for the first time. Players comparing the demo against earlier promotional footage argued that her features had been softened and asked the studio to restore the earlier look. Others read the same shots as ordinary iteration with more detail in the face rather than a redesign.
Producer Kun Fu answered the question at the event. He said the earlier promotional video had also used real time rendering, that the underlying face shape is the same in that video and in the playable build, and that the visible difference came from lighting work done to keep performance smooth. He accepted that the demo build had been put together quickly and said the team would keep refining how her face reads under different lighting. No change to the character model itself was announced.
Gwendolyn is built around summoning. She fights on the front line herself, but her real strength is the summoned allies she can call into battle, the Spectral Knights, modeled after the legendary Knights of the Round Table. Each knight has a distinct kit, tactical role, and elemental identity. The player equips two knights per combat set, with two interchangeable sets for a total of four knights in rotation, and can swap between them in the middle of a combo using directional inputs. The studio has confirmed the same shape for the finished game: two groups of knights, each holding one primary and one secondary, switchable at any point in a fight.
The August 2026 build gave players a pool of five to choose from: Bedivere, Gaheris, Gawain, Kay and Palamedes. Each set pairs one primary knight with one secondary. Primary knights carry a dozen or more attack moves; secondaries carry two, and exist to answer a specific problem rather than to fill a combo.
This loop is the game's Dual Frontline Battle System. Gwendolyn and her summoned knights operate as a coordinated pair, or in larger encounters like boss fights, as a larger ensemble. The Colossal Knights are designed to be genuinely massive, dwarfing Gwendolyn in scale, and her role in those fights is as much director as participant: she chains her own combos, orchestrates tandem assaults, or lets a knight disrupt an enemy's pattern while she repositions.
Two additional mechanics extend her moveset. She can channel elemental energy drawn from an active knight directly into her own weapon, so a knight linked to lightning lets her empower strikes with lightning, and likewise for fire and ice. And she can enter a Partnered State by absorbing a knight into herself, swapping the two-character rhythm for a solo, enhanced mode with synchronized combos, improved mobility, and defensive parrying.
The August 2026 build also set out how a run around her is paced. Checkpoints take the form of thrones the game calls Oath Reforged, where Gwendolyn restores her health, and the studio has said the finished game will also let the player change knights, manage equipment and fast travel from them. Resting sends the smaller enemies back. Enemies carry a stagger gauge, and draining it opens them to an execution, while both ordinary attacks and knight abilities feed the meter behind her Burst attack. Difficulty is a choice rather than a fixed setting: the studio has confirmed several difficulty options without publishing the list.
Gwendolyn has four confirmed weapon types, and the developers have been deliberate about only revealing three of them in pre-release coverage:
Sword, the primary melee option and the form her companion Niniane takes when she transforms into a weapon. Gwendolyn's blade is, in the fiction, Niniane herself in shape-shifted form, which makes Niniane a constant on-screen presence even when she isn't appearing as a character.
Fists, named by the developers as a close-range option and not shown in any build or footage.
Bow, named by the developers as a ranged option and not shown in Gwendolyn's hands.
A fourth weapon, confirmed to exist but not yet shown publicly.
That count comes from a developer interview, and it is worth keeping separate from what has actually been played. In the August 2026 hands-on build only the sword was demonstrated, in several equippable variants carrying different abilities and affixes. Fists and bows were not seen in Gwendolyn's hands at all. Two things in demo footage are easy to misread here: the Green Dragon Crescent Blade belongs to Guan Yu rather than to her, and the arrows fired during traversal come from a knight's ability rather than from her own loadout. Hands-on accounts of the August 2026 build read that second point differently, describing a magical bow whose arrows string ziplines across gaps as one of Gwendolyn's own tools. The producer assigns the traversal arrow to Gaheris instead, and the two accounts have not been reconciled in public. See Weapon Types for the full breakdown.
How weapons interact with her skill tree and progression has not been described. Nobody who played the August 2026 build could account for how the levelling layer or the skill trees work, so whether weapon choice feeds into them is still an open question.
The Partnered State is Gwendolyn's most distinctive solo mode. Instead of keeping a Spectral Knight on the field as a separate entity, she absorbs one into herself, essentially fusing with it for a window of empowered combat. While partnered, her move set picks up the absorbed knight's elemental identity, her dodge and traversal options expand, and she gains a dedicated parry that shifts the rhythm of a fight from spacing to timing. Different knights produce different Partnered States, so the mechanic doubles as an expressive choice: the player picks which knight to absorb based on the enemy in front of them, not just on who has the best raw damage.
The mode is also how the game solves the problem of boss encounters that aren't suited to the two-character frontline. In set-pieces like the fight against Tyronoe, Gwendolyn pairs with Sir Lamorak across a Mirror Space Folded Realm, and the player controls both characters simultaneously to overcome the encounter. The shift between distinct frontlines and unified Partnered State is a core rhythm of her combat identity.
Gwendolyn was originally voiced by Jennifer English, an English actress best known for playing Shadowheart in Baldur's Gate 3 and Maelle in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Her casting was announced as part of the game's English-language push, and the role was positioned as one of the major performances anchoring the Western launch.
English told the studio in June 2026 that she could not continue in the part, and the decision was announced publicly on 18 July 2026. She stepped down for health reasons, calling it a difficult but personally necessary decision, and stayed attached to the project in an advisory capacity. Her recorded work on the role was not finished when she stepped away, because the game is still in development.
She did not simply leave, either. The studio has said that English remains the project's voice-over director, that she helped the studio find her successor, and that she then coached the incoming actress through the recording process. English said in her own statement that she had introduced the studio to an actor she believed was a good fit for the role. What that continuing role is formally called has not settled: some accounts render it as voice-over director and others as an advisor to the project, and no single title has been published. This wiki records both rather than choosing between them.
Angela Sant'Albano is the successor. The studio named her on 25 August 2026, presenting the first story trailer as her debut in the part, and she is known for voicing Grace in Resident Evil Requiem. She had been working on the role for months before the announcement: the studio said in July 2026 that the incoming actress was already recording for the August demo build. Capture from the Chengdu sessions carries English dialogue, so the performance players heard there is very probably hers, although the studio has never said so directly. In her announcement statement Sant'Albano described Gwendolyn as a heroine who carries self-doubt and questions whether she is enough, but who refuses to let fear hold her still, and said what drives her is love for her sister and her homeland.
Separately, Aliona Baranova voices the antagonist Mordred. The dynamic between Gwendolyn and Mordred is one of the story's central relationships, and the casting plays into it directly.
Gwendolyn has featured in every major reveal of the game so far. The first announcement trailer and State of Play reveal set up her premise as the lone survivor of London and a wielder of the gray fog. Subsequent gameplay shows have focused on expanding the combat system around her:
Initial gameplay reveal, the first extended look at Gwendolyn commanding Spectral Knights. This shows off the Dual Frontline Battle System and a confrontation with Mordred.
Extended gameplay trailer, an eleven-minute combat-focused deep dive into her sword work and her swap-mid-combo rotation between knights.
Xbox Partner Preview trailer, the reveal of the Mirror Space Folded Realm mechanic, built around a spectacular boss fight between Gwendolyn, Sir Lamorak, and the witch-boss Tyronoe.
Pre-release gameplay demos of unspecified length, showing end-to-end play across both London and Avalon, Partnered State in practice, and mid-game encounters.
Published capture lengths taken from those builds vary far too widely to be treated as a measure of the demo, so this page records session lengths instead. The Chengdu press session on 14 August 2026 ran two hours, split into 90 minutes of play and a further 30 minutes of recording. The public sessions that followed at gamescom 2026 ran closer to an hour each.
Across these showings, Gwendolyn is consistently positioned as the face of the game rather than as one of an ensemble cast. Tides of Annihilation is, structurally, a single-protagonist action-adventure, and every combat, traversal, and story system in the game is built outward from her. New players should start with Getting Started and Combat.
