Kay is one of the Spectral Knights that Gwendolyn summons through the Dual Frontline Battle System in Tides of Annihilation. He was one of five knights available in the playable build shown in August 2026, where coverage nicknamed him the time knight. His summon slows enemies down rather than damaging them, and it is the single clearest example of the support role a secondary knight fills.
Combat Profile
Calling Kay drops a clock-like effect over the fight that slows enemy attacks. One hands-on description put the change in concrete terms: a move that came out with no visible windup instead takes roughly twenty frames to arrive, which is the difference between an attack that cannot be reacted to and one that can be read and answered. The producer described the time knight's purpose the same way from the design side, saying it works by binding and denying the enemy so the player has more room to attack.
Attribute | Confirmed Detail |
|---|---|
Loadout slot | Secondary. Two attack moves, called through the support summon input. |
Signature effect | A clock-like field that slows enemy attacks, lengthening their startup so they can be reacted to. |
Design purpose | Stated by the producer as binding and denying the enemy in order to open damage windows for the player. |
Effect family | The knight roster grants effects such as complete block, time stop and wind magic. The time effect is Kay's. |
Summoning | Can be called in the middle of a combo, so the slow lands without dropping a chain. |
Weapon | Not disclosed in any material released so far. |
Building Around Kay
Loadouts hold four knights at once, two primary and two secondary, and the player can switch between them at any point during a fight. A primary knight carries a dozen or more attack moves; a secondary carries two. Knights can be summoned in the middle of a combo, so their moves extend a chain Gwendolyn has already started.
Kay is the answer to a primary knight that hits hard and moves slowly. Players in the August build gave the pairing as a worked example: Palamedes is deliberately sluggish as a primary, so putting Kay in the same loadout and slowing the enemy first is what makes his charged attacks land. The same logic covers any commitment that needs a guaranteed window, which is most of what a heavy ground kit does.
Partner | Why the pairing works |
|---|---|
Sluggish as a primary. Slowing the enemy first is what lets a charged attack finish and connect. | |
Long grounded strings need an uninterrupted window, which is exactly what the slow buys. | |
A juggle commits Gwendolyn to a fixed path in the air. Slowing enemy attacks makes that commitment safer. | |
The other secondary in the playtest pool. Kay slows attacks, Gawain redirects them, so a loadout can carry both kinds of relief. |
Grail Shards
The in-game lore glossary states that all of the Knights of the Round Table hold Grail Shards, and that gathering those shards is what lets Gwendolyn manipulate the fog. Kay's own shard has not been shown.
Kay in the Legend
None of what follows has been shown as the game's version of events. The studio has been direct that the legend is a starting point rather than a script: game director Ary Chen has said the team is not copying it one to one and will have its own interpretation and narrative, and producer Kun Fu has said the action system was designed first, with the knights, the world and the art built afterwards to fit it.
In the legend, Kay is Arthur's foster brother, the son of Sir Ector, raised in the same household as the boy who would pull the sword from the stone. In Malory it is Kay's broken tournament sword that sends Arthur looking for a replacement in the first place, and Kay who briefly claims the sword before his father makes him tell the truth. He is seneschal of Britain, the household officer who runs the court, and the romances give him a sharp tongue: he is the knight who mocks newcomers, and the one who nicknames Gareth as Beaumains. The older Welsh tradition draws a much stranger Cei, a warrior who could hold his breath for nine days, grow as tall as a tree, and give off enough heat from his hands to keep his companions dry in the rain. That Cei rides with Bedwyr, the figure later romances turn into Bedivere.
None of that has been shown in the game, including any connection between Kay and the other knights in the playtest pool. The wider approach to the source material is covered on Arthurian Legend in Tides of Annihilation.
What Has Not Been Confirmed
Open question | Current state |
|---|---|
The label time knight | Used in coverage of the demo and echoed by the producer when describing the design. It has not been confirmed as an in-game name for the knight or his ability. |
Weapon and element | Never stated. |
Unlock timing | Not disclosed. The five playtest knights were a fixed selection for that build. |
Place in the full roster | Official material says the finished game lets the player command a band of over ten legendary knights, so the playtest five are a slice rather than the roster. |
Partnered State | No merged form has been shown for Kay. Partnered State has been demonstrated with other knights. |
