Gawain is one of the Spectral Knights that Gwendolyn summons through the Dual Frontline Battle System in Tides of Annihilation. He was one of five knights available in the playable build shown in August 2026, and he is the clearest example of what a secondary knight is for: a support summon whose job is to take pressure off Gwendolyn rather than to carry the damage.
Combat Profile
Summoning Gawain scatters an enemy formation, and he then remains on the field for a stretch, pulling enemy attention onto himself. He also has a short blink to a target at mid range that lands a hit on arrival, which extends the player's control of a combo across a gap. A secondary knight carries two attack moves, against a dozen or more for a primary, so his value is in what those two moves do to the shape of a fight rather than in their damage.
Attribute | Confirmed Detail |
|---|---|
Loadout slot | Secondary. Two attack moves, called through the support summon input. |
Signature effect | Scatters enemy formations, then stays on the field for a while drawing enemy attention. |
Mobility | A blink to a target at mid range that connects on arrival and extends combo control. |
Summoning | Can be called in the middle of a combo, so his moves slot into a chain already in progress. |
Weapon | Not disclosed in any material released so far. |
Element | Not disclosed in any material released so far. |
Why Threat Drawing Matters Here
A summon that takes aggro is unusual in a single-player action game, and it makes Gawain a scheduling tool rather than a damage tool. He goes out, splits a group, and holds a share of the enemies' attention long enough to turn one crowded fight into two smaller ones. The producer has said that on the higher difficulty the fight turns on understanding and using each knight's particular characteristic and answering enemy moves correctly, rather than on raw combo pressure, and a summon that peels attention is exactly that kind of tool.
Loadouts hold four knights at once, two primary and two secondary, and the player can switch between them at any point during a fight. A primary knight carries a dozen or more attack moves; a secondary carries two. Knights can be summoned in the middle of a combo, so their moves extend a chain Gwendolyn has already started.
Partner | Why the pairing works |
|---|---|
Long grounded strings need an uninterrupted window. Gawain buys it by taking the smaller enemies off him. | |
Charged attacks are slow to release. Holding enemy attention elsewhere is what lets a charge finish. | |
While Gawain holds the ground, Gaheris takes a single target into the air. | |
The other secondary in the playtest pool. Kay slows attacks, Gawain redirects them, so a loadout can carry both kinds of relief. |
Grail Shards
The in-game lore glossary states that all of the Knights of the Round Table hold Grail Shards, and that gathering those shards is what lets Gwendolyn manipulate the fog. Gawain's own shard has not been shown.
A Famous Name in a Mixed Roster
Gawain is one of the best known names in the Arthurian tradition, and his presence matters for how the roster reads. Early reveals leaned on deep cuts, Sir Lamorak and Palamedes in particular, and the studio has talked about the freedom that comes from picking figures without a fixed pop-culture version. The playtest pool put Gawain, Kay and Bedivere alongside them, so the finished roster looks likely to mix household Round Table names with obscure ones rather than avoiding the famous ones.
Gawain in the Legend
None of what follows has been shown as the game's version of events. The studio has been direct that the legend is a starting point rather than a script: game director Ary Chen has said the team is not copying it one to one and will have its own interpretation and narrative, and producer Kun Fu has said the action system was designed first, with the knights, the world and the art built afterwards to fit it.
In the legend, Gawain is the eldest son of King Lot of Orkney and Morgause, Arthur's half-sister, and the senior of the Orkney brothers. Welsh tradition knows him as Gwalchmei, and the early French romances treat him as the model of courtesy and the standard other knights are measured against, before Lancelot, Percival and Galahad displace him. He is the hero of the beheading game against the Green Knight, riding out a year later to take the return blow at the Green Chapel and flinching once. Several sources give him strength that rises until noon and falls afterwards. In Malory's ending, the deaths of Gaheris and Gareth at Lancelot's hands turn Gawain into the engine of the war that empties Camelot, and he dies of a reopened head wound before the last battle.
The game has shown none of this. The wider approach to the source material is covered on Arthurian Legend in Tides of Annihilation.
What Has Not Been Confirmed
Open question | Current state |
|---|---|
Weapon and element | Never stated. Hands-on accounts describe what his summon does, not what he carries. |
Unlock timing | Not disclosed. The five playtest knights were a fixed selection for that build. |
Place in the full roster | Official material says the finished game lets the player command a band of over ten legendary knights, so the playtest five are a slice rather than the roster. |
Partnered State | No merged form has been shown for Gawain. Partnered State has been demonstrated with other knights. |
