Overview
Alfonso Estate is a location in Crimson Desert that serves as the setting for the boss encounter with Walter Lanford, a formidable gunman who fights with a double-barreled shotgun and smoke grenades. Unlike many boss encounters in the game, the Walter Lanford fight at Alfonso Estate is a non-optional story progression encounter, meaning players must defeat him to advance the main narrative. The estate is one of several named locations tied to specific boss battles across Pywel.
The Boss: Walter Lanford
Walter Lanford is a quick gunman whose double-barreled gun is described as his prestige weapon. He takes a very aggressive combat approach, striking from a calculated distance and using evasive maneuvers to maintain his preferred range. Unlike most other bosses in Crimson Desert, Walter has only one HP bar. His swift movements and evasive skills compensate for the lack of additional health phases, making the fight feel fast and intense rather than drawn out.
Walter has no blocking capabilities, which makes him vulnerable to direct counterattacks whenever the player can close the distance and find an opening. The fight demands precision and keen attention to his movement patterns.
Attack Patterns
Walter Lanford's moveset centers on ranged shotgun attacks and repositioning through smoke grenades. Each attack has distinct visual and audio tells that the player can learn to read.
Attack | Description | Counter |
|---|---|---|
Double Barrel Shot | Shoots his double-barrel twice at the player in front of him. Deals moderate damage at close range | Block with a shield or evade with a backslide to create distance |
Double Barrel Barrage | Fires a barrage of slugs that inflicts massive damage if the full burst connects | Block with a shield or backslide to safe distance, then close in for a counterattack during recovery |
Poof | Throws a pouch of blinding smoke on the ground and somersaults out of combat to gain distance. This is his primary escape and repositioning tool | Dash forward toward his somersault landing point and deliver a heavy attack to knock him down before he can resume shooting |
Scattershot | Charges his weapon for about half a second, then fires a scattershot with a crimson hue that damages in a wide arc. Has knockdown potential and can lead to continuous damage if the initial hit lands | The half-second charge is the tell. Dodge sideways to avoid the arc |
Shrapnel Shower | Fires a special shotgun shell into the sky. Crimson shrapnel falls randomly on the ground for roughly two seconds. Has a chance to knock the player down | Keep moving during the shower. The falling shrapnel covers a random area, so constant movement reduces the chance of being hit |
Strategy
The most effective approach against Walter Lanford is a run-and-hit fighting strategy. Maximize movement at all times and never give Walter the opportunity to counterattack from range.
Exploit his lack of blocking. Walter cannot block incoming attacks, so every opening you find is a guaranteed damage window
When he uses Poof, dash forward in the direction of his somersault. Closing the gap quickly and landing a heavy attack while he recovers is the single best damage opportunity in the fight
Shield blocking is effective against both Double Barrel Shot and Double Barrel Barrage. Use it to absorb damage while closing distance
Backslide to create space against his ranged attacks, then re-engage when he pauses between volleys
Watch for the Scattershot charge. The half-second wind-up with the crimson hue is unmistakable once you have seen it a few times
Shotgun blasts can be deflected back at Walter. A magic barrier ability can collect incoming bullets and fire them back, dealing significant damage
Grapple attacks can interrupt his combos when you are in close range
The Lanford Name
Walter shares the Lanford surname with Marquis Stefan Lanford, the Lord of Calphade and an ally to the Greymanes. Stefan Lanford plays a role in the Calphade questline, where Kliff helps defend Calphade against a rebellion led by the traitor Cassius Morten. However, no official source has confirmed any family connection between Walter Lanford and Marquis Stefan Lanford. The shared surname may indicate a familial relationship, but this has not been verified.
Context
Walter Lanford was revealed alongside Muskan and Kearush the Slayer as part of an IGN First showcase in October 2025 featuring 23 minutes of new boss fight gameplay. Among the three bosses shown, Walter Lanford represents the ranged combat archetype: where Muskan is a pure brawler and Kearush is a swift melee fighter, Walter keeps his distance and punishes players who fail to close the gap.
As a non-optional boss, the Alfonso Estate encounter is part of the main story progression. Defeating Walter yields boss equipment imbued with his signature abilities, consistent with Crimson Desert's system where equipping boss-derived gear grants access to that boss's signature skill.
