Every island fortress starts the same way: one floor square, one wall, and one roof cap on top.
Building Pieces is the collective term for every snap-together structural component in Windrose. Over 335 individual pieces are organized across eleven main categories that together cover everything from a starter leaf shack to a fully walled stone estate.
The Building Panel (B key) organizes pieces into the following structural categories. Each category has its own dedicated wiki page covering all available variants, material tiers, and placement tips.

|---|---|---|---|
| 46 | Wall panels, large walls, and special shapes (arch walls, corners, inclined walls). | |
| 58 | Roof flats, caps, corners, frontons, and triangular pieces across multiple pitches. | |
| 13 | Square floor tiles, large floors, triangular floors, and rounded floor pieces. | |

| 30 | Doors, double doors, arched doors, and gate panels across all material tiers. | |
| 34 | Window frames ranging from small openings to large stained-glass fixtures. | |
| 21 | Straight stairs, corner stairs, spiral stairs, plank stairs, and pier stairs. | |
| 10 | Fences, gates, palisades, and rope fences. | |
| 10 | Free-standing arches, arch beams, and framed arches. | |
| 6 | Roof-free awnings in leaf, straw, arched, and gabled styles. | |
| 7 | Foundation blocks, basements, and stone block platforms. | |
| 1 | Decorative ceramic cornice trim for plastered wall tops. | |
| 8 | Fireplace assemblies: hearths, chimneys, firewood racks, and flue pieces. | |
| 5 | Shoreline pier platforms and pier piles that enable waterside construction. | |
| 3 | Heavy barricade walls with 10,000 HP for outpost defense. |
Every structural piece is offered in multiple material tiers. Higher tiers cost more processed materials but have higher Max Health and cleaner visual styling. You unlock higher tiers by finding new materials on later islands and by looting recipe plan drops at Points of Interest.
Icon | Tier | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Tier 1 Leaf | Earliest shelter material; uses Plant Fiber and Wood. Low HP (~750 per wall piece). | |
Tier 2 Stick | Simple early-game structures made from gathered Wood and Sticks. | |
Tier 3 Bark / Weathered | Mid-early construction using processed bark or weathered timber. HP around 750-1,000. | |
Tier 4 Plank / Log | Refined wood construction. Requires lumber processing at the Workbench. | |
Tier 5 Stone / Clay / Limestone | Durable masonry construction using quarried Stone, Clay, and Limestone. HP climbs to 1,500-2,500. | |
Tier 6 Stone and Timber / Mahogany / Plaster / Marble | Combined late-game estate tier unlocked through exploration and Points of Interest recipe drops. |
Beyond structural pieces, the Building Panel also holds decoration, furniture, storage, farming, and craft stations.

A colored hologram indicates material status: green means you have everything, yellow means partial stock, and red means a key material is missing. Demolishing any placed structure returns 100% of the construction materials into your inventory, so experimentation is risk-free as long as you have inventory space to catch the refund.
Place pieces in logical order: foundation or floor first, then walls and pillars, then roofs. Doors and windows snap into wall slots last.
Every structural piece has a Required Plan field. Early tiers unlock automatically, but mid- and late-tier plans drop as rare loot from Points of Interest or can be bought from NPC merchants after clearing regional threats.
Demolishing returns full materials, so prototype a layout in cheap Plant Fiber or Wood and upgrade to Stone or Mahogany once the shape is locked in.
Most stations must be placed inside Bonfire range to function. Centre the bonfire before you stamp down expensive building pieces.
Structures within a Tent respawn radius also create a safe camp zone; pair the bonfire, a tent, and a Workbench as the first three buildings on any new island.
