Scanner
The Scanner is a handheld tool available from the start of every game in the Subnautica franchise. It scans objects, creatures, flora, and technology fragments to unlock encyclopedia entries in the PDA and discover crafting blueprints for the Fabricator. In Subnautica 2, the Scanner has been upgraded with radar functionality for locating resources and items of interest in the surrounding area.
Core function
The Scanner is pointed at an object and held until a progress bar fills, at which point the scan is complete. Scanning a creature or plant adds its encyclopedia entry to the PDA, providing biological data, habitat information, and assessment notes. Scanning technology fragments unlocks crafting blueprints. Most complex items require scanning two or three fragments before the full blueprint is available.
In the original Subnautica
In the original Subnautica, the Scanner was one of the first tools crafted. It was essential for progression because scanning fragments was the primary way to unlock new blueprints. Without the Scanner, players could not build vehicles like the Seamoth, Cyclops, or Prawn Suit. The tool was crafted at the Fabricator using a Battery and Titanium.
The Scanner Room was a base module that automated the scanning process. Once built, it could be configured to search for specific resources, fragments, or creatures in a radius around the base, displaying results on a wall-mounted display and allowing players to fabricate camera drones for remote exploration.
In Subnautica 2
The Scanner is one of the starting tools available from the beginning of the game, alongside the Flashlight. Dev Vlog #1 (April 23, 2025) showed an expanded Scanner with radar functionality. This radar feature helps players locate materials and scannable objects in the surrounding area, reducing the time spent searching for specific items in the larger world of Planet Zezura.
The Scanner works alongside the Biosampler in Subnautica 2. While the Scanner provides encyclopedic information about creatures and unlocks crafting blueprints, the Biosampler extracts usable genetic material for the DNA Adaptation System. Both tools reward exploration and interaction with Zezura's fauna, but serve different progression paths: the Scanner feeds into crafting and resources, while the Biosampler feeds into genetic modification.
Resource gathering changes
The radar upgrade to the Scanner in Subnautica 2 complements the new resource gathering system. Since Subnautica 2 uses resource-specific nodes instead of randomized outcrop drops, the radar helps players locate specific types of resources they need rather than stumbling across them. This makes resource gathering more intentional and less reliant on luck.
