Seed Sparkle Lab is a Chinese indie game development studio based in Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province. Starsand Island is their debut title and the studio's sole released project. The team is led by Creative Director Richardo Wang and Technical Director Golton Gao. Seed Sparkle Lab describes their mission as creating a "next-generation cozy life-simulation sandbox" where players can slow down, build their ideal pastoral life, and find warmth and emotional comfort on a living island.
Studio History
The studio has operated under several names over the course of its development. It was originally known as Creativision Studio, then rebranded to Seed Lab during the majority of Starsand Island's development and marketing period (including the Kickstarter campaign and game show appearances). The studio adopted its current name, Seed Sparkle Lab, around the time of the Early Access launch in February 2026.
The team is based in Zhuhai, a coastal city known as the "city of a thousand islands." In interviews, the developers have described how the view of scattered islands from their office windows directly inspired the game's island setting and name. The team originally planned to develop an action game, but finalized the farming simulation concept by late 2023.
Corporate Background
Seed Sparkle Lab was founded with investment from Kingsoft Corporation and Seasun Games, as confirmed in a September 2025 interview. Kingsoft is a major Chinese technology company known for WPS Office and a long history in online gaming. The studio's previous registered business name, Zhuhai Kingsoft Digital Network Technology Co., Ltd., reflects this corporate connection. Community discussion about the studio's relationship with Kingsoft arose during the Kickstarter campaign and after the Early Access launch. In response, a studio representative stated on the official Discord: 'Investment does not equal control over our creative direction. We are an independent studio and not a subsidiary of any conglomerate.' The developers have consistently maintained that Starsand Island's creative decisions are made independently by the Seed Sparkle Lab team in Zhuhai.

Golton Gao | Technical Director (also credited as Producer in some press materials) |
Gao has described the game's character customization system, built on their proprietary engine, as "a self-inflicted nightmare for coders," reflecting the technical complexity the team took on to deliver full creative freedom to players.
Development Philosophy
Seed Sparkle Lab draws deeply from Daoist philosophy, particularly the concept of "great usefulness born from a state of no intention" (wu wei). This principle shapes how the game's various systems connect naturally rather than through forced progression. The studio describes the game as a "spiritual utopia" aimed at delivering "a heartwarming and healing emotional experience."
The team draws from cultural philosophies centered on nature, tranquility, and the healing power of everyday life, aiming to create what they call an "Eastern-inspired world of pastoral reflection." In interviews, the developers have consistently expressed their core message: "We want to share the idea that it's okay to slow down. The game is about relaxation, creativity, and gentle connections."
Starsand Island Development
The studio built Starsand Island on a Unity 6000 engine with a custom-built character customization and building system developed from scratch. According to reporting, the team felt only a custom engine could provide the level of player freedom and the sheer number of different aesthetic pieces they envisioned for the game's customization systems.

Pathea Games Collaboration
Seed Sparkle Lab partnered with Pathea Games, the studio behind the My Time series (My Time at Portia, My Time at Sandrock). This collaboration brought crossover characters to Starsand Island:
Gust and Ginger from My Time at Portia, who arrive on Summer 23 of the first year after the player repairs the Starsand Station train line
Fang and Nia from My Time at Sandrock, arriving in Autumn of Year 1
The two studios also offer a combined "My Time at Starsand Island" bundle on Steam, and a My Time at Sandrock crossover event is planned for Autumn 2026.
Publisher and Distribution
Seed Sparkle Lab self-publishes Starsand Island on Steam and Xbox digital storefronts. The studio received investment from Kingsoft and its subsidiary Seasun Games, which facilitated the Chinese government game approval process. The studio has stated publicly that this investment does not affect their creative independence, describing themselves as "an independent studio and not a subsidiary of any conglomerate."
Physical distribution for the PS5 edition in the Asia-Pacific region is handled by Game Source Entertainment (GSE). The game launched day-one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
Post-Launch Support
After the Early Access launch, Seed Sparkle Lab shipped five patches in eight days, addressing crashes, quest blockers, and controller issues. No in-game microtransactions
Full mod support planned (Steam Workshop targeted for May 2026)
Community-driven development through a "co-creation" philosophy
No planned price increase after Early Access

Early Access Controversies
Review Controversy
Shortly after the Early Access launch in February 2026, Starsand Island was the subject of an unusual 'praise bombing' incident on Steam. Dozens of highly positive reviews appeared from accounts with less than 10 minutes of playtime, many posted within minutes of the game's launch. Some accounts had suspiciously similar game libraries and activity patterns, leading the community to suspect automated or AI-generated reviews. Seed Sparkle Lab publicly denied involvement and issued a statement asking the unknown party to stop: 'To whoever may be behind this, please stop. Please let us focus on making our game in peace.' The studio proactively worked with Valve to flag and remove the suspicious reviews. The motive behind the praise bombing remains unclear, and the incident was widely covered by outlets including The Gamer, PC Gamer, Kotaku, GameRadar, and VGC.
Anti-Cheat Controversy
The initial Early Access build included anti-cheat software, which prevented modding and raised privacy concerns among players. Multiple Steam community threads criticized the decision, with some players interpreting it as a way to protect cosmetic DLC sales by blocking modded alternatives. Seed Sparkle Lab responded by removing the anti-cheat software in a subsequent patch and confirming that mod support with Steam Workshop integration would be added in May 2026.
