Loom

The Loom is a crafting station in the textile crafting pipeline that converts raw animal products and plant fibers into finished fabrics. It sits in the middle of the three-station textile chain: Spinning Wheel produces thread and rope from fiber, the Loom weaves raw materials into fabric, and the Sewing Table turns fabric into finished clothing and accessories.
The Loom blueprint is available at the Starter tier from Zerine's General Store. Purchase the blueprint and build the Loom at a Worktable. The Spinning Wheel and Sewing Table blueprints are available at the same tier, so you can set up the full textile chain early in the game.
Understanding where the Loom fits in the overall textile system is important for efficient production.
Station | Function | Key Outputs |
|---|---|---|
Processes Fiber into thread, rope, and fishing line | Hemp Rope, Fishing Line, Carbon Line | |
Loom | Weaves wool, fur, and plant fibers into fabric | Linen, Flannel, Leather, Velvet, colored fabrics |
Crafts fabric into finished clothing | All craftable clothing items |
The Spinning Wheel and Loom serve different purposes despite both working with fiber-based materials. The Spinning Wheel produces rope and line, while the Loom produces flat fabrics. They are parallel stations, not sequential for most recipes.
The Loom produces a wide range of fabrics from different input materials. Each fabric type is used in specific clothing recipes at the Sewing Table.
Fabric | Input Material | Source |
|---|---|---|
Linen | Hemp / Plant Fiber | Gathered from tall grass and bushes on the surface |
Flannel | Wool | Produced by rabbits in Rabbit Hutches |
Leather | Fur | Produced by cows in Cattle Barns |
Velvet | Premium Wool / Fur | Adult animals and premium breeds |
Linen is the earliest fabric available since Fiber is gathered from the surface. Flannel requires setting up ranching with rabbits, which begins when you start the Rancher questline with Pastelle at Green Pasture Ranch. Leather requires cows, which become available at the Intermediate Rancher level. Velvet is a premium fabric from higher-quality animal products.
The Loom also produces colored versions of fabrics. Starsand Island has 13 colored fabric variants.
Fabric Color | How to Obtain Input Material |
|---|---|
White Fabric | White wool from standard white rabbits or sheep |
Black Fabric | Black wool from black sheep (Snowools produce black and white wool) |
Red Fabric | Red wool from red-colored animals |
Blue Fabric | Blue wool from blue-colored animals |
Green Fabric | Green wool from green-colored animals |
Yellow Fabric | Yellow wool from yellow-colored animals |
Orange Fabric | Orange wool from orange-colored animals |
Purple Fabric | Purple wool from purple-colored animals |
Cyan Fabric | Cyan wool from cyan-colored animals |
Rainbow Fabric | Special wool from rainbow animals |
Colored wool and fur come from colored animals. You cannot dye wool or fur directly in Starsand Island. Instead, you must breed colored animals or unlock them through the Islandpedia stamp system.
There are two main methods for obtaining the colored animal products needed for colored fabric production.
Breeding: Breed two different-colored animals together. The offspring color is random. For example, breeding a black and white sheep may produce a green sheep. Results vary, so expect to breed multiple times for specific colors.
Islandpedia Stamps: Discover species in your Islandpedia (fish, bugs, etc.). Reaching certain milestones (around 72 species discovered) unlocks Biodiversity stamps that reward colored lambs and other animals directly.
Once you have colored animals, they naturally produce colored wool or fur. Process the colored materials at the Loom to get the matching colored fabric.
Material | Animal | How to Collect |
|---|---|---|
Wool | Rabbits, Sheep | Build Rabbit Hutches or Sheep Pens. Animals automatically produce wool that appears as a sparkling pickup inside the enclosure. |
Fur | Cows | Build Cattle Barns (Intermediate Rancher). Fur is collected similarly to wool. |
Premium Wool | Adult Rabbits, Adult Sheep | Adult animals produce both regular and premium wool. |
Alternatively, you can steal small amounts of wool and fur from the animal pens at Green Pasture Ranch by looking for sparkling spots near the animals. This yields random animal products but in much smaller quantities than owning your own livestock.
Set up the Loom early even if you only have Fiber access. Linen is used in many basic clothing recipes and is easy to produce.
Build the Spinning Wheel alongside the Loom. While they serve different purposes, both are needed for the full range of textile products.
Start the Rancher questline with Pastelle as soon as possible. Rabbits provide wool for Flannel, which unlocks a much wider range of clothing at the Sewing Table.
For colored fabrics, focus on the Islandpedia method first. Fishing and catching bugs to reach 72+ species is faster than trying to randomly breed the right color.
The Loom processes fabrics over time (not instantly). Consider building two Looms if you need large quantities of fabric for a clothing crafting session.
Keep separate storage for different wool and fur colors. Mixing colored animal products makes it harder to track what fabrics you can currently produce.
