Expanded stub into a complete article covering overview, all gathering locations (Rocky Ridges mines, Dragonite Doll Dream Island), collection methods, building uses (Freezing Chambers, Rocky Ridges Pokemon Center, Team Initiation Challenge), crafting recipes, and tips.
Crystal Fragment is a rare material in Pokemon Pokopia obtained by smashing large crystal formations found underground. It appears as a translucent blue shard and is described in-game as "a piece of broken crystal. It's transparent, so you can see right through it." Crystal Fragments belong to the Shiny Stuff favorite category, and they can be traded for 100 coins (or 150 when marked as a favorite).
This material is one of the harder resources to gather in bulk because crystal formations only appear in specific underground rooms. However, Crystal Fragments are required for several major building projects and crafting recipes, so collecting them whenever you find them is strongly recommended.
Crystal Fragments can be gathered from two main sources.
The primary source of Crystal Fragments is the mine system inside Rocky Ridges. Crystal formations grow as large blue, translucent nodes in the deeper sections of the volcanic caves. They are visually distinct from regular rock and ore blocks because of their glowing, gem-like appearance.
To reach the main crystal room, enter the mines from the northwest entrance of Rocky Ridges. Walk forward and turn left to find metal gates blocking the path. You will need the upgraded Cut move (obtained by baking bread in a Bread Oven) to slice through these gates. After cutting through, turn right and continue deeper into the caves until you reach a chamber with four heavy stone pillars. Use Strength to push these pillars aside, revealing a hidden room filled with blue crystal formations.
This secret room contains a large number of Crystal Chunks, making it the most efficient farming spot in the game. There is also a secondary deposit of Crystal Chunks deeper in the lava section of the mines, near hot spring areas.
The Dream Islands system provides a daily alternative source. Using a Dragonite Doll with Drifloon transports you to the Sky Dream Island, which is based on Sparkling Skylands. The Sky Dream Island contains three focus materials: Wastepaper, Pokemetal, and Crystal Fragments. This makes it a popular destination for endgame players who need both Pokemetal and Crystal Fragments.
You can visit a Dream Island once per day. The Dragonite Doll is purchased from the Pokemon Center Terminal after reaching a certain Environment Level in Sparkling Skylands. It can also appear in random glowing treasure spots in Withered Wasteland.
Crystal Fragments are collected by breaking Crystal Chunks (the large blue crystal nodes). There are two methods.
Method | Move | Speed | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
Rock Smash | Fast | The recommended method. Smash the crystal node and pick up the fragments that drop. | |
Cut | Slower | Also works on Crystal Chunks, but takes noticeably longer per node than Rock Smash. |
Both methods are performed through Ditto's transformation moves. Rock Smash is taught by Hitmonchan at Withered Wasteland. After breaking a Crystal Chunk, small Crystal Fragment items appear on the ground for you to collect.
Crystal Fragments are required for several major building and construction projects. Because these projects demand large quantities, most players need to farm the Rocky Ridges mines multiple times.
Building Project | Crystal Fragments Needed | Other Key Materials | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
Freezing Chambers | 10 | Attracts Articuno to become a resident | |
Rocky Ridges Pokemon Center | 5 | Stone x25, Copper Ingot x25, Iron Ingot x25 | Rebuilds the Pokemon Center in Rocky Ridges |
Team Initiation Challenge (Stage 5) | 10 | Electricity x50, Tinkagears x5 | Delivery for Stage 5 of the Team Initiation Challenge |
The Freezing Chambers kit is found on the eastern island of Palette Town, atop a set of waterfalls. Building the Freezing Chambers requires 10 Crystal Fragments along with 50 Stone, 50 Ice, and 10 Pokemetal. Once construction is complete, Articuno appears inside the structure and becomes a resident on your island. The construction crew also requires a Water Specialty Pokemon and a Search Specialty Pokemon alongside standard Build and Crush roles.
Rebuilding the Pokemon Center in Rocky Ridges costs 5 Crystal Fragments plus 25 Stone, 25 Copper Ingot, and 25 Iron Ingot. The rebuild kit costs 1,000 Life Coins and is available after reaching Environment Level 3 in Rocky Ridges. You need 8 Pokemon to assist with the construction.
Stage 5 of the Team Initiation Challenge requires you to deliver 10 Crystal Fragments along with 50 Electricity and 5 Tinkagears. The challenge takes place at the mysterious tower in Withered Wasteland. Completing Stage 5 rewards you with the Soul-like Badge.
Crystal Fragments are also used in several decorative furniture recipes. Items that use Crystal Fragments tend to be shiny, reflective, or light-emitting.
Item | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Crystal Wall | Decorative / Building | A translucent wall block made from crystal |
Mirror Ball | Decorative / Furniture | Requires Crystal Fragment and Gold Ingot |
Chic Streetlight | Decorative / Outdoor | A decorative light fixture with a crystalline design |
For a full list of crafting recipes, check the crafting menu in-game. Additional Crystal Fragment recipes may be discovered through Daily Specials or Sparkling Ripples in water.
Crush every Crystal Chunk you find. Crystal Fragments are fairly rare compared to other mining materials, and you will need at least 25 for the three major building projects alone.
The hidden room behind the Strength pillars in Rocky Ridges is the single best farming location. Make sure you have both the upgraded Cut move and Strength before attempting to access it.
Visit the Sky Dream Island daily using a Dragonite Doll for a consistent supply. The island also drops Pokemetal and Wastepaper, so it is efficient even beyond Crystal Fragment farming.
Crystal Chunks do not respawn as quickly as regular ore deposits. Plan your mining trips accordingly and stockpile fragments if you plan to craft multiple crystal-based items.
If you are working toward the Team Initiation Challenge, start collecting Crystal Fragments before reaching Stage 5. Gathering 10 fragments takes time if you have not been mining regularly.
Use Rock Smash instead of Cut when breaking Crystal Chunks. Rock Smash is significantly faster per node.
