Detailed article on The Coast starting biome
The Coast is the first biome players explore in Outbound and the setting for the game's opening hours. It features a diverse landscape of tropical shores, rocky cliffsides, towering redwood forests, and sandy beaches dotted with palm trees. The biome serves as a tutorial area where players learn the fundamentals of crafting, building, energy management, and exploration.
The Coast stretches along a varied shoreline that transitions from wide, sandy beaches to dramatic rocky cliffs. Inland areas feature dense forests of enormous redwood trees that tower above the canopy, creating shaded groves with unique flora at ground level. Coastal streams and small rivers wind through the terrain, providing water sources for both farming and energy generation.
The terrain is generally accessible for the camper van, with established paths winding between major points of interest. However, some areas — particularly clifftop overlooks and dense forest interiors — are only reachable on foot, rewarding players who leave the van to explore.
The most prominent landmark in The Coast is an old lighthouse perched atop the highest cliff overlooking the sea. Visible from a considerable distance, it serves as both a navigation aid and a point of interest for exploration. The lighthouse area contains unique resources and lore elements that provide context for the game's utopian setting.
The Coast offers a balanced selection of basic resources ideal for early-game progression. Logs from redwood trees and standard timber provide building materials. Rocks and stones are abundant along the shoreline and cliff faces. Berry bushes, wild plants, and mushroom patches supply food and crafting ingredients.
The Coast provides moderate conditions for all four energy types. Clear skies during daytime support solar panels, while the coastal breeze offers consistent (if not exceptional) wind energy. Streams and tidal areas are well-suited for water generators. The rich vegetation makes biomass collection straightforward. This balanced energy profile makes The Coast an ideal training ground for understanding how different energy sources complement each other.
The free Steam demo released in February 2026 takes place entirely within The Coast, offering approximately three hours of gameplay. The demo area showcases the biome's variety — from beach campfires to forest foraging to clifftop vistas — while giving players a taste of the crafting, building, and energy systems they'll use throughout the full game.
