Overview
The Fifth Epoch is the current historical era of the world in Lord of Mysteries. The campaign opens in 1349 of the Fifth Epoch, following the source material's chronology.
The Epoch frame organises the world's history into long cyclical eras separated by cataclysms. Each previous Epoch ended in a near-extinction-level supernatural disaster, and the Fifth Epoch's stability since roughly year 0 makes it one of the longest sustained periods of mortal civilisation on record.
Calendar Context
The Fifth Epoch's calendar runs across roughly 1,400 years to the campaign's opening. Key reference points:
Date | Event |
|---|---|
Year 0 | The cataclysmic boundary that ended the Fourth Epoch. Specific details are reserved for late-game and source-material spoiler content; the campaign references it through scattered hints and vision sequences. |
Around 1143 | Roselle Gustav transmigrates into the world and sparks the industrial revolution that defines the modern era's technology. Official material credits him with overthrowing the Kingdom of Intis and founding first a republic and then an empire. |
The 1300s | The modern political map forms: Loen as a constitutional monarchy, Intis as a republic, and the smaller states around them. See Setting and World. |
1349 | The campaign opens. Klein Moretti transmigrates into Klein's body, joins the Tingen Nighthawks and founds the Tarot Club. |
Late 1349 into early 1350 | The window the live campaign's opening acts play out across. See Quests and Story. |
Major Epoch Structures
The Fifth Epoch carries forward institutions from earlier eras even as new ones emerge:
Structure | Standing in the Fifth Epoch |
|---|---|
Established religious institutions with roots deep in the early Fifth Epoch. | |
The 22 Pathways | Pre-existing structures that pre-date the Fifth Epoch and survive across Epoch boundaries. See Beyonders and Sequences. |
The industrial revolution | A Fifth-Epoch-specific transformation triggered by Roselle Gustav's transmigration. Without Roselle, the Epoch would have stayed pre-industrial. |
Formed in the campaign's opening year, a recent addition to the world's Beyonder structure. |
The Fourth Epoch in the Live Game
The previous Epoch is not only background. The game's first season centres on Roselle Gustav and the Fourth Epoch War of the Four Emperors, and Roselle's second epithet, the Knowledge Emperor (知识皇帝), is the in-fiction explanation for why his archives hold the war records the season draws on. Those records are the stated source material for the game's top competitive tier, so a war fought an Epoch ago is the frame around live endgame content. See Faction Warfare and PvP.
Fourth Epoch remains also stand on the live map. Lamud Castle (拉姆德古堡), one of the named launch regions, is the ruined seat of a lord from the end of the Fourth Epoch, and the in-world caption treats it as haunted rather than merely old.
Where the Story Is Going
The long-form story is publicly framed in four stages, in order: The Struggle of Mortals (凡人的挣扎), The Awakening of the Actor (扮演者的觉醒), The Birth of Gods (神明的诞生), and The War with the Self (自我的战争). Read against the Epoch frame, that is a ladder from ordinary Fifth-Epoch life up to the kind of divine conflict that ended earlier Epochs.
Why the Epoch Frame Matters
The Fifth Epoch's relative stability is a load-bearing thematic element. Characters know that previous Epochs ended in catastrophe, and many Church doctrines and Beyonder secret-society structures exist specifically to prevent another Epoch-ending event. The campaign's stakes ladder up toward that concern, with the later acts wrestling directly with whether the Fifth Epoch survives intact.
For players, the Epoch frame provides scope. Decisions are framed against a millennial timescale. The Tarot Club's rituals reach across geographic distance, but the player's character is also reaching across historical distance, walking the same path figures like Roselle and Klein walked, in a chain of transmigrators and revolutionaries that compounds over Epoch-scale time.
