Teenager Life Stage
March 31, 2026 at 07:30 PM
Initial version
The Teenager stage is the fifth of nine life stages in inZOI, following the Adolescent stage and preceding the Young Adult stage. It lasts for 4.5 in-game days (roughly 432 real-time minutes at the default day length of 96 minutes). During this period, your Zoi transitions from a school-age youth into a near-adult who can drive, develop adult-level skills, attend high school, and form early romantic connections with other teenagers.
Teenagers represent a significant step up in autonomy compared to children and adolescents. They are capable of caring for themselves, interacting with more of the environment, and being treated as a fully controllable Zoi. However, they still lack access to several features that only unlock at the Young Adult stage, including full-time careers, university enrollment, and Desired Life goal selection.

One of the most important events at the start of the Teenager stage is the Aptitude system activation. Children have access to four exclusive child skills, each capped at level 5. When a child ages up to Teenager, any maxed-out child skill triggers an Aptitude unlock that automatically sets the corresponding adult skills to level 5. This rewards players who invested time in skill development during the earlier life stages.
Child Skill | Aptitude Name | Adult Skills Unlocked at Level 5 |
|---|---|---|
Creativity | Creativity Aptitude | Performance, Media Production, Art, Instrument |
Motor Development | Motor Development Aptitude | |
Social | Social Aptitude | Charm, Rhetoric |
Responsibility | Responsibility Aptitude | Housework |
Creativity is the most versatile of the four child skills because it branches into four separate adult skills at once. A child who maxes out Creativity before aging up will begin the Teenager stage with level 5 in Performance, Media Production, Art, and Instrument simultaneously. For this reason, many players prioritize Creativity during the Child and Adolescent stages.
If a child skill was not fully leveled before aging up, the corresponding adult skills will start at a lower level (or at level 1 if no progress was made). The Aptitude system is a one-time conversion that only applies at the moment the Zoi becomes a Teenager, so there is no way to retroactively gain the bonus.
Teenagers are automatically eligible for High School enrollment. You can enroll your Zoi through the smartphone (press P) by navigating to the School tab and selecting the appropriate school. Enrollment is instant and has no admission requirements.
High School operates as a rabbit hole location, meaning your Zoi disappears into the school building during class hours and returns home when the school day ends. There is no interactive classroom gameplay. The game tracks academic performance through an Academic Level metric, which rises when your Zoi attends school regularly and completes homework on time. Missing deadlines or skipping classes causes the Academic Level to drop. Three unexcused absences may result in expulsion.
After each school day, teenagers receive homework assignments that appear as a task list on the left side of the screen. These tasks must be completed within roughly 5 to 6 hours after school ends. Homework often asks you to read specific books, so if you do not own the right titles at home, you should send your Zoi to the library to study them. Keeping up with homework is important because it directly affects Academic Level, which in turn influences your Zoi's readiness for university once they become a Young Adult.
The Teenager stage is the earliest point at which a Zoi can sit in the driver's seat and operate a vehicle. Children and Adolescents cannot drive at all. Once your Zoi reaches the Teenager stage, they can get behind the wheel using WASD controls and honk with left-click.
While teenagers can drive, there are some ownership limitations. Vehicles belong to the household and can only be driven by their owner. Each household is limited to one car at a time, so if you want a different vehicle, you will need to sell the current one first. Teenagers can also rent and drive boats, giving them access to watercraft activities on the coast.
At launch, teenagers in inZOI could not engage in any romantic interactions. This changed with the v0.2.0 update (June 2025), which introduced age-appropriate romance for teenage Zois. Teenagers can now pursue crushes, make confessions, and go on first dates with other teenagers in their age group.
These romantic interactions are restricted to other teenagers only. A teenager cannot enter a romantic relationship with a Young Adult, Adult, or any older life stage. The system also includes random choice card events, such as receiving an anonymous love confession at school. After school, your Zoi may even get the chance to unmask a secret admirer.
The v0.2.0 update also expanded the general relationship system. Zois can now exchange gifts with each other, and other Zois in the city may initiate contact by sending text messages or showing up at your doorstep unannounced. These social mechanics apply to teenagers as well, making their day-to-day social lives more dynamic.
Teenagers have access to most of the activities available in inZOI, though some features remain locked until the Young Adult stage. Here is an overview of what teenagers can and cannot do.

Despite their increased independence, teenagers are still restricted from several systems that define adult gameplay in inZOI:
No employment: Teenagers cannot hold full-time or part-time jobs. The career system, including all job listings and promotions, is locked until the Young Adult stage. School effectively functions as a teenager's "job" since the game treats school enrollment and employment as the same slot.
No Desired Life: The Desired Life system, which gives your Zoi a long-term goal and a structured path forward, does not become available until Young Adult. Teenagers live without a defined aspiration.
No university: Although teenagers attend high school, they cannot apply to or enroll in university. University admission opens at the Young Adult stage and requires applying through the smartphone.
Romance restrictions: While teenagers can pursue age-appropriate romance with other teens, they cannot enter romantic relationships with Young Adults or older Zois.
Limited interactions: Certain interactions and objects are restricted. For example, teenagers cannot use DJ equipment.
After 4.5 in-game days, your Teenager Zoi will automatically age up to Young Adult. The transition happens in a single moment: the Zoi's height, posture, and appearance change instantly to reflect their new age bracket. There is no gradual transformation or aging animation. You cannot stop or delay this transition through normal gameplay, though you can adjust the overall day length in settings to slow down how quickly in-game time passes.
The Young Adult stage is arguably the most significant life stage transition in the game, because all remaining features unlock at this point. Your Zoi gains access to full-time and part-time careers, university enrollment, Desired Life goal selection, and unrestricted romance with any adult Zoi. The Young Adult stage lasts for 9 to 10 in-game days, giving you a generous window to establish your Zoi's career and personal life.
Because the Teenager stage is relatively short at 4.5 days, it is worth planning ahead. Make sure your Zoi's Academic Level is in good standing before the transition, and take advantage of the Aptitude skill bonuses early so you are ready to hit the ground running as a Young Adult.
The following table shows where the Teenager stage fits within the full life stages progression. Day counts are approximate and assume the default day length of 96 real-time minutes per in-game day.
Life Stage | In-Game Days | Real-Time Duration | Key Unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
Newborn | 1 day | ~96 minutes | Traits, Family Relationships |
Toddler | 2 days | ~192 minutes | Basic Skills, Movement |
Child | 7 days | ~672 minutes | Child Skills, Elementary School, Smartphone, Values |
Adolescent | 5-6 days | ~480-576 minutes | (Continued child development) |
Teenager | 4.5 days | ~432 minutes | High School, Aptitude Unlocks, Driving, Business Relationships |
Young Adult | 9-10 days | ~864-960 minutes | All features: Careers, University, Desired Life, Full Romance |

Senior | Up to 35 days | ~3,360 minutes | Job Retirement, Natural Death |
Max child skills before aging up. The Aptitude system only triggers once, at the Teenager transition. Prioritize Creativity for the broadest adult skill head start (four skills at level 5).
Enroll in High School immediately through the smartphone (P key) to avoid missed days and keep your Academic Level healthy.
Complete homework promptly after school. You have roughly 5 to 6 hours before the deadline expires. If the assignment requires reading a book you do not own, head to the library.
Take advantage of driving as soon as the Teenager stage starts. Having a car makes it much easier to travel between school, social activities, and community lots.
Use the teen romance system (v0.2.0+) to build early relationships that can carry into the Young Adult stage.
The Teenager stage is short (4.5 days), so plan ahead for the Young Adult transition. A high Academic Level and strong skill foundation will give you a significant advantage when careers and university open up.
If you want to slow down aging, adjust the day length slider in settings. A longer in-game day means each life stage lasts proportionally longer in real time.
