The Barrier is a massive dome of magical energy around the Valley of Mines in Gothic 1 Remake. It was raised by twelve mages on the orders of King Rhobar II to contain the Colony's convict population while keeping the ore-mining operation running. Alkimia Interactive has confirmed the Barrier as the central framing conceit of the remake: the Hero begins the game by being thrown through it.
One-way permeability. Items and people can be pushed or fired in from the outside, which is how the ore trade works, but nothing living inside the Barrier can cross back out.
Still standing. The Barrier remains up for the entire main campaign. Every faction has its own theory about how to break it.
Unintended scope. When the ritual to raise it went wrong, the twelve mages themselves were trapped inside the Colony, which is how both the Fire Mages and Water Mages ended up on opposite sides of a prison wall they personally built.
Faction | Plan for the Barrier |
|---|---|
Accept the Barrier. Trade ore out through it in exchange for wine, food, and supplies. | |
Break the Barrier. The Water Mages research artifacts that might bring it down. | |
Awaken the Sleeper. Believe the entity below the Colony will destroy the Barrier and free them all. |
The Barrier is the reason the Colony's politics exist in their current shape. The search for Focus Stones that ties the middle chapters together is driven by the question of whether the Barrier can be broken from the inside. See The Twelve Mages for the mages who raised it.
