Focus Stones are ancient magical artifacts scattered across the Valley of Mines. Collecting them is the main-quest arc that pulls the middle chapters of Gothic 1 Remake together, and they are the physical key to opening the temple of The Sleeper at the end of the campaign.
Why They Matter
Temple access. In the preserved storyline, the Sleeper's temple is sealed, and Focus Stones set into specific points are positioned as the key that allows the Hero and his allies to open the way inside. Specific encounter mechanics for the remake have not been published in pre-release material.
Faction-agnostic. Every camp has an interest in the stones, which is why the artifact hunt pulls in members of the Fire Circle, the Water Mages, and the Brotherhood of the Sleeper.
Xardas's direction. The necromancer Xardas is the main source of direction for the Hero during the Focus Stone arc.
Where They Are
The stones are distributed across the Valley of Mines in ruins, mines, and orc-held sites. Specific per-stone locations for the remake have not been published in pre-release material; the arc is part of the preserved story the developers have said they are keeping intact.

Relation to the Barrier
The Focus Stones are not a direct Barrier release mechanism. The New Camp's Water Mages have their own research and artifact theories about breaking the Barrier that intersect with the Focus Stone hunt without being identical to it.

The Focus Stones Quest
The Water Mages send the Hero to recover the Focus Stones from four sites across the valley, starting from the Fogtower lighthouse where the Four Friends are waiting. The most efficient route is the Fogtower to the Monastery Ruins, then the Troll Canyon, then the Stone Circle, and finally the Mountain Fortress.
Focus Site | Notes |
|---|---|
Monastery Ruins | First stop on the recommended route from the Fogtower. |
Troll Canyon | Guarded approach; clear the path before grabbing the stone. |
Stone Circle | Set among standing stones in the open valley. |
Mountain Fortress | Last and most defended of the four sites. |
Each stone returned to Saturas awards roughly 3,500 experience, and finishing the arc pays out around 300 ore nuggets plus a bundle of healing and mana potions. The quest opens right after The Water Mages' Plan.
