The Sleeper
The Sleeper is the central antagonist of Gothic 1 Remake. It is an ancient being entombed beneath the Valley of Mines whose slumber was disturbed when the mages raised the Barrier over the Colony.
Dreams and Visions
When the twelve mages cast the Barrier ritual, the spell reached the Sleeper's temple and awakened it enough to bend the ritual itself. In the aftermath, the Sleeper began speaking to a convict named Y'Berion through dreams and visions, presenting itself as a benevolent god that could free the Colony if its worshippers helped it fully wake.
The Brotherhood
Y'Berion gathered followers and broke away from the other camps to form the Swamp Camp, also called the Brotherhood of the Sleeper. The Brotherhood believes that awakening the Sleeper will destroy the Barrier and end the Colony's captivity. Its members refer to the Sleeper as their god and dedicate their labour to its rites.
Role in the Plot
Uncovering what the Sleeper actually is, and what will happen if it fully wakes, is the through-line of the main campaign. The final chapter, The Temple of the Sleeper, confronts the Nameless Hero with the creature directly. See Chapters for the full narrative outline.
