The Pickaxe is a starting melee weapon and mining tool in Gothic 1 Remake. Alkimia Interactive has confirmed the Pickaxe as one of the earliest usable items the Hero can swing, with the demo's Old Mine sequence and the bestiary work surrounding it showing it in action alongside the club, the rusty sword, the short sword, and the Flaming Torch in the starter-weapon set.
Combat Use
Emergency melee. The Pickaxe is not a high-damage weapon, but it is good enough to let an unarmed Hero defend himself in the opening hours.
Fits the Combat System. The Pickaxe swings through the remake's Combat System the same way a starter short blade does, which means the Hero can practice parry and dodge patterns on early enemies with it.
Step-up weapon. The Pickaxe is typically replaced once the Hero can afford or earn a real sword.
Starter Weapon Comparison
Tool | Combat Role | Where the Hero Finds It |
|---|---|---|
Pickaxe | Emergency melee and labour tool. Doubles as the mining implement. | Issued or scavenged in the Old Mine and the camps that surround it. |
Club | Low-damage starter blunt weapon. Cheap and common. | Easily picked up from low-tier NPCs and early encounters. |
Rusty Sword | Worn-down short blade. The first proper sword most Heroes hold. | Found early in the camps and in scattered loot near the drop zone. |
Short Sword | Cleaner version of the rusty sword. The natural step up before training opens. | Available through early-game Trainers and the camps' supply chains. |
Improvised melee plus a light source for dark interiors. | Picked up in mines and dim camp interiors. |
Mining Use
The Pickaxe is also the tool the Colony's mine workers use in the Old Mine and Free Mine. In that context it is a labour implement more than a weapon, and its presence in the starter inventory connects the Hero's arrival to the Colony's working class from minute one.

Ore-Extraction Loop
Step | Detail |
|---|---|
Approach the Vein | Active ore veins are marked inside the Old Mine and the Free Mine. The Hero needs a Pickaxe in inventory to interact with them. |
Swing | The Pickaxe swing animation is the same loop the Colony's miners run on shift. The remake's reworked work animations include the mining swing as a distinct, repeatable motion. |
Yield | Output is the Colony's magical ore. In the Old Camp economy that ore flows up through the Ore Barons to Gomez; in the New Camp economy it feeds the Water Mages instead. |
Exchange | Ore moves between camps through the Exchange Zone, which is one of the demo's central locations. |
In the Nyras Prologue Demo
The Nyras Prologue demo's Old Mine sequence shows the Pickaxe in both of its roles in the same span: as a defensive tool when Nyras has to fight in tight underground spaces, and as the mining implement that defines what the Colony's labour actually looks like.
