Best Abilities to Equip

Choose abilities around the job a unit will perform in battle. Character abilities, class mastery rewards, skill ranks, temporary bath effects and mount bonds offer different ways to fill those slots.
Check the learned-ability menu before battle. Personal, class and mount effects are distinct from selectable learned abilities. A forecast also displays weapon effects and support bonuses, so its number of icons does not measure free equipment slots.
Ability | How to learn it | Effect and use |
|---|---|---|
Ravaging Arts | Master Myrmidon | Critical hits deal 6 additional damage. It suits a unit built to land critical hits. |
Sense Threat | Master Armored Ornius Rider | Avoid +20 during combat against a foe whose attack is effective against the unit. |
Aegis | Master Bardinger | 20% chance to halve magical attack damage. Plan around the activation chance rather than expecting every spell to be reduced. |
Pavise | Master Cataphract | 20% chance to halve physical attack damage. It covers a different damage type from Aegis. |
Guardian's Duty | Personal skill: Buccar | Incoming damage is multiplied by 0.9. This means a 10% reduction, rather than a 90% reduction. |
Read the Winds | Flying rank D | Avoid +10 during combat against a foe using a bow. It provides a specific answer to bow attacks. |
Flickering Edge | Jester reaches levels 20 and 35 | Avoiding an enemy attack grants Attack +3 during combat, increasing to +5 at level 35. |
Canto / Canto+ | Mount bond levels 3 and 5 | While Cavalry, move 1 tile after combat at bond 3, increasing to 2 tiles with Canto+ at bond 5. |
Check the abilities and learning levels listed for the character before choosing a long-term class. Levels 20 and 35 are common unlock points, but some units learn abilities later. Class mastery rewards provide another reason to train a related class before moving on. An archer can examine Sniper, Forest Knight and Ranger instead of mastering an unrelated class solely to fill a slot.
For a critical-hit build, Ravaging Arts contributes its extra damage when a critical hit occurs. Jester's Flickering Edge instead rewards avoiding an attack. For defence, distinguish the damage type covered by Aegis and Pavise and remember that each has a 20% activation chance. Guardian's Duty is Buccar's own personal skill, not a mastery reward available to the whole roster.
Weapons and movement ranks also unlock abilities and Combat Arts. Read the Winds requires Flying rank D and only gives its Avoid bonus against bows. Check that the unit can learn the ability before committing training to that rank.
At Renown level 8, the Thermae lets two recruited units bathe together. Each receives a random ability from the bath's pool. The ability lasts for the current chapter and occupies a selectable ability slot. If those slots are full, equip it manually from the learned list.
Choose the bath pool to match the unit's role. Bath choices change weekly, and the calendar in the Adventure Journal lists the current selection. Special baths are available on Sundays. Renown level 9 unlocks additional baths. The Thermae also restores HP, magic uses and Motivation and raises the pair's Support points.
Canto allows Cavalry to reposition after combat. The effect is 1 tile at mount bond level 3 and 2 tiles at level 5 with Canto+. The mounts listed for it are Black Magonius, Falicorn, Ferghanan Horse, Black Bau and Black Horse. The movement applies to Cavalry, so a mount or bond bonus alone does not establish that every class can use it.
Cai can feed captured mounts to build bonds on his route. Io and Alexandra have exclusive mounts that can also be used on other routes; without feeding, developing the bond takes longer. Match the available mount and class to the movement option the unit needs.
Shield of Zephyrus removes flying effectiveness. Read the Winds supplies bow-specific Avoid, so it serves a different purpose. Use the individual class and equipment pages to compare the two options.
Skills lists ability effects and unlocks. Classes explains the class choices, Certification Exams covers entry requirements, and Animal Mounts covers capturing and assigning mounts. Combat Arts describes attacks paid for with weapon durability.
