Added his Part II guest role, Part III join point, Part I boss battles and paralogue; dated open questions
Bertrand is a character in Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, introduced by the arena announcer as the living legend of Dagsion and known by the epithet the White-Maned Demon. He leads the clan called the Mane of Flame, he fights endlessly for his own freedom, and he stands at the point where two of the four Heroes' stories cross: Dietrich wants to duel him, and Leda wants him dead.

His Japanese name is ベルトラン. The epithet in Japanese is 闘技場の白髪鬼, closer to "White-Haired Demon of the Arena", and it is attached to his appearance. The clan name has been rendered both as the Mane of Flame and as the Mane of Flames; the Japanese is 炎の鬣.
Bertrand is a fixture of the Heroic Games rather than a newcomer to them. The announcer's introduction in the Direct runs: "Emerging today from the eastern gate, a man I'm sure you all recognise. Dagsion's living legend, the White-Maned Demon!" Under the strength that earned him the name, his profile describes a noble and virtuous streak, and a man who would prefer peace.
He is one of four rivals reported to have reached the final eight of the 1449 tournament, alongside Talimun, Orchel and Anatolia, and in the retail prologue the statues on the Alcineus Span name him among eight Flame Lords. His record has one visible dent: the assassin Cruaidín is described as beating him in the opening exhibition bout.
Bertrand is the first opponent Dietrich names on camera. In the Direct's montage of the four Heroes, Dietrich says "I have burned to duel you, White-Maned Demon," which fits a Hero who came to this continent chasing stronger opponents and stayed for the tournament. Bertrand appears as a boss on the House Lamine route.
Bertrand appears to be the man who murdered the father of Leda, and she is hunting him. This link is drawn from preview coverage and from in-game dialogue rather than from a published profile, so it should be read as strongly indicated rather than as settled. What is on record is her reaction on learning the killer is competing: "He's... alive! I will kill him." Her mentor left her a list of names before he died, and Bertrand is one of the two targets on it that have been identified so far, the other being Lechner. He is a boss on the Rose Tempest route as well as the House Lamine route.
His appearance is not fixed across footage. Red markings run over his body in some scenes and are absent in others: they are missing at the opening of the Heroic Games, and present both during his clash with Leda and in the arena scene where he and Gaitz face Dietrich and Fabio. As of September 2026, this wiki has not documented what brings them out, and no profile mentions them at all.
Bertrand is one of the nine characters confirmed to have access to Blaze Arts, the special commands paid for in health. The others outside the four Heroes and Eshmel are Talimun, Anatolia and Orchel. As of September 2026, this wiki has not documented the names or effects of Bertrand's, so nothing is written here about what he does with them.
Aswan knew Bertrand before the 1449 games and is startled to find him alive and fighting in them; her line is simply "Bertrand...you are alive." Roster listings also describe Iliana of the Order of Mithras as his guardian, though that description comes from a single roster page and, as of September 2026, this wiki has not documented what the relationship involves.
Gaitz is named as his ally and stands beside him when the pair face Dietrich and Fabio in the arena. A martial artist who fights as a Gladiator at Dagsion's Arena and trained in the eastern land of Sai, he pushes back on the epithet directly: many people fear the White-Maned Demon's strength and take the wrong idea about what he is actually like, and by Gaitz's account there is no more pleasant or interesting man, though you would not understand that until you fought at his side. Gaitz's own profile does not mention Bertrand.
Bertrand is a boss in Part I and an ally afterwards. He cannot be recruited during the Heroic Games; instead he fights beside the player as a guest in every battle of Part II, where his falling is a defeat condition whichever Hero's version is being played, and he joins as a full unit in Part III, arriving on the third turn of its opening battle. Before launch this was unsettled, with one roster flagging him as potentially playable and another listing him under recruitable units with his clanmate Dante. See Recruitment for how rival participants are won over in general.
In Part I he is the opponent in the main match of the eleventh chapter of Dietrich's route, Twisted Love, and in an exhibition in the sixth chapter of Theodora's route, The Treasure Hunter. On Cai's route he is met in the Arena Underground in the fourth chapter.
His paralogue, Friendly Match with Brigid's King, is given by Gabriel in Arena Square. It is open from 9/17 to 9/25 on Cai's and Theodora's routes but only on 9/17 on Dietrich's, the tightest window of any paralogue, and it cannot be played on Leda's route. The party races Peppe's group to defeat four giants, using bait to keep the rival group off a giant for a turn. It pays 20,000 gold, 150 Renown and an Extra Large Bullion, and clearing it is a requirement for recruiting both Peppe and Gaitz.
