Relationships are the social layer of The Blood of Dawnwalker. Coen does not face the thirty days alone: the people of Vale Sangora can be befriended, recruited, disappointed or fed on, and the shape of those bonds changes which quests open, who stands beside him at the end, and who is still alive to appear in the epilogue. Some of those bonds can become romantic.
How Bonds Are Built
There is no separate relationship menu and no published approval meter. Bonds are built inside the quest system: a character's questline is the relationship, and the dialogue taken along the way is how it deepens. The developers described the system in a community bulletin as one where every relationship has the potential to open new paths and reveal hidden truths, where some bonds strengthen Coen, others test his resolve, and a few stir up feelings he did not expect.
Two of the game's other systems press directly on this one. The 30-day cycle means attention is finite: hours spent with one person are hours not spent with another, and a questline left too long can lapse. Blood craving means a night conversation can end a relationship outright, because losing control and draining an important character removes them and their questline from the run permanently.
Notoriety works the other way. A loud campaign against Brencis frightens ordinary villagers but improves Coen's standing with the factions already fighting the regime, so the same actions that make the valley harder to move through make certain allies easier to win.

Reported Approaches
Players documenting the shipped game during launch week settled on a consistent set of habits for keeping a relationship on track. None of these is stated by the developers, so treat them as player guidance rather than confirmed rules.
Approach | Why It Is Reported to Help |
|---|---|
Pursue the character's questline promptly | Most of the chains are optional, and several expire if left too long against the 30-day clock. |
Be kind rather than cruel in dialogue | Players found it signposted clearly in the dialogue wheel rather than hidden behind checks. |
Be honest instead of people pleasing | Said to read better than agreeing with everything, particularly with Crake. |
Say so when there is an opening to flirt | The main lever, since the chains themselves carry few hidden requirements. |
Spend time with the character when the game offers it | Optional scenes in the prologue and between quests are where most of the flirting sits. |
Romance
Romance was confirmed by the developers well before launch as part of the quest layer rather than as a separate system. Coverage of the shipped game has documented three characters who can be romanced: Anca, Lacra and Crake, the Manumit leader who also goes by his birth name Marat. Coen is not restricted to one partner, and all three chains can be completed in a single run.
No first-party roster of romanceable characters has ever been published. The three below are the ones documented so far, not a closed set, and the valley holds characters whose relationship content has not been written up anywhere.
Character | Where the Bond Starts | Reported Quest Chain | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
The prologue, when Coen collects medicine for Esme from her herb shack outside Laslea. | Withering Away: Page Turner, Echoes of Silenced Bells, Between the Words, Where Old Devils Lie, Stronger Than Achilles, then the decision about the Font. | Described as the relationship the story leans on hardest, and as the one partner who appears in every epilogue and gets the most screen time. | |
A Friend Like This, reached either by defeating Ambrus in The Gilded Gauntlet and reading the note on his body, or through Vicho after A Study in Crimson. | A Friend Like This, The Song of the Mountain, Hive and Seek, Our Rotten Roots, The Night of Horrors. | The only vrakhir option. Accounts agree it hinges on accepting the mandrake at the end of The Night of Horrors, which also decides her fate. | |
Crake, also Marat | The Firebrand in the prologue, then Shadows in the Woods, which is where Sara leads Coen to the Manumits. | The Firebrand, Shadows in the Woods, Where Loyalty Lies, What Hunts the Night, What Moves the Dead, Distant Shadows, A Closer Look. | The only one of the three described as wanting something lasting once the rebellion is over. |
Published accounts do not agree on every beat. One traces Anca's chain through Stronger Than Achilles and the Font decision, another routes the same relationship through a quest called The Font of Life, so the closing steps of her chain should be read as reported rather than settled. Every quest named above is listed with its confirmation status on Quest List.
Bonds That Are Not Romances
The relationship layer reaches well past the three romance chains, and several of the non-romantic bonds have larger mechanical consequences than the romantic ones.
Character or Group | What the Bond Does |
|---|---|
His support is a gating variable on the assault of Greifberg Castle: finding his hideout in Svartrau Cathedral and completing his quest opens a daytime side door that is otherwise closed. His fate in the epilogue turns on the same questline. | |
The Manumits | Joining the rebellion through Where Loyalty Lies opens an entire questline and one of the documented endings. See Factions. |
Coen's family | Esme, Pieter, Yanna, Mirto and Lunka are the reason the clock is running at all, and several epilogue tableaux report only on them. |
Vicho | Appears in the epilogue looking after Lunka if Coen befriends him, and is one of the two routes into Lacra's questline. |
Ocha | A Uriashi sword teacher and Swordmastery vendor. Helping her in The Heart Wants What It Wants opens access that matters later, including a route toward Lacra. |
Where Relationships Surface at the End
The epilogue is where the relationship layer is cashed out. Documented variables include whether Anca stays in Laslea or leaves in search of a different cure, whether Lacra appears at all, whether Crake and the Manumits are defending the valley or dead, and whether Father Florin is canonised or executed. Which characters stand with Lunka in the closing scene changes with the same bonds. The full set is covered on Endings.
What Is Not Confirmed
No first-party list of romanceable characters exists, so the documented three should not be written or read as the complete set.
No approval or affection meter has been shown in any published material, and the developers have never described one.
Whether any relationship can be lost through dialogue alone, rather than through feeding or through letting a questline expire, is undocumented.
Whether romance outcomes carry any mechanical reward beyond the epilogue appearances is unstated.
