Skills in Crimson Desert encompass all combat techniques, elemental abilities, and non-combat activities available to players. Rather than a traditional class system, skill development is tied to weapon choices, the Axiom Bracelet, and knowledge gained through observation and exploration. Kliff MacDuff and the other playable Greymanes each have distinct skill sets shaped by their equipped weapons.
Combat skills are determined by the weapon a character wields. Each weapon type has a unique moveset with distinct attack chains, tactical advantages, and combo routes. Players can switch weapons during gameplay to adapt to different encounters.
Sword and Shield — parry chains, overhead slams, and defensive counters; the primary weapon of Kliff MacDuff
Spear — long-reach thrusts, aerial pokes, and wind-blast attacks
Greatsword — wide sweeping attacks with area-of-effect damage; wielded by one of the playable Greymane companions
Axe — heavy strikes with high stagger potential; wielded by another playable Greymane companion
Dual Blades — fast, close-range attacks with rapid combo potential
Bow — precise ranged attacks, charged shots, and stealth openers
Flintlock Pistol — mid-range firearm used alongside a greatsword by a playable companion
Wrist-Mounted Crossbow — fires bolts including incendiary variants; used by a playable companion
Crimson Desert features a grappling system that blends seamlessly into weapon combat. When close to an enemy, players can initiate grapple moves instead of standard attacks. Confirmed grapple techniques include:
Suplexes and chokeslams
Hammer throws that launch enemies
Directional grapples that vary based on the direction pressed
Aerial grapple finishers performed by companion characters
Grappling is not limited to a dedicated stance — it flows naturally from standard melee combat, allowing players to mix weapon strikes with throws mid-combo.
Elemental abilities are granted by the Axiom Bracelet, a magical artifact worn by Kliff. These powers can be infused into weapon attacks mid-combo, creating hybrid elemental strikes. The bracelet's abilities can be leveled up with skill points. Three elements have been confirmed:
Fire — inflicts burning damage over time and can set enemies ablaze
Ice — freezes and slows targets, reducing their movement and attack speed
Lightning — stuns enemies, electrifies the ground beneath them, and can chain between targets
Specific input sequences on the bracelet activate special moves. For example, certain thumb-stick combinations enable techniques such as triple jumps. See Axiom Bracelet for detailed ability descriptions.
Life skills are non-combat activities that provide materials, consumables, and economic benefits. Some life skills are learned through the Knowledge System by observing NPCs in the world. Confirmed life skills include:
See the dedicated Life Skills article for full details on each activity, proficiency, and how they support combat preparation.
Abyss Artifacts are the primary resource for unlocking and upgrading combat abilities. They are fragments of the floating Abyss realm that fall to the surface of Pywel. Players locate them using a sword light-reflection mechanic, where the blade reflects ambient light to point toward nearby fragments.
Fragments come from:
Defeating powerful bosses
Discovering fragments scattered throughout Pywel
Completing quests and liberation missions
Exploring dangerous locations and dungeons
Sealed Abyss Artifacts are rarer variants found at specific fragment locations. They require additional effort to unlock but provide stronger ability upgrades.
The Knowledge System is a separate path to skill acquisition. By scanning regions and observing NPCs performing actions, players can learn those same skills. This means some abilities cannot be obtained through fragments alone — they must be found in the world. Life skills such as fishing are acquired this way, by watching an NPC perform the activity.
Some abilities unlock only through exploration or quest completion, independent of fragments. Hidden areas, environmental puzzles, and secrets can reward unique techniques.
Producer Will Powers clarified in a Save State interview that while demo builds showed Kliff with roughly 60% of all skills unlocked, that was for demo purposes. In practice, players choose a specialty. Powers gave archery as an example: a bow-focused player would invest all their skill points into archery-specific abilities — defensive ones, long-range ones, slowing down time to shoot arrows, charging up shots — and could avoid melee combat entirely.
Other viable specializations include:
Face-tanking — more of a gear specialization according to Powers; the game has perfect parry and perfect dodge mechanics that reward timing, and players can lean into a defensive build through gear choices and skill investment
Stealth — Powers confirmed there is an optimization path for players who want to be as stealthy as possible; see Stealth
Ranged combat — full archery investment lets players keep enemies at distance permanently
Powers compared the design philosophy to the opposite of Bloodborne, which forces a specific counter-and-shotgun playstyle. In Crimson Desert, players pick how they want to play, and the skill and gear systems support that choice.
Many skills work in both combat and puzzle-solving contexts. Force Palm, for instance, can shove enemies in a fight but also lift and move objects for environmental puzzles. See Combat Abilities for the full list.
Enemies in Crimson Desert have set difficulty levels rather than scaling with the player. This means players can grind past tough encounters. Will Powers stated: "We never want the player to feel like 'oh, you just have to get good.' If you invest time, you can beat everything. Or you could just be an incredibly skilled player and just run right through it." Between gear upgrades, skill investment, and time spent, there is always a path forward. See Weapons & Equipment for how gear factors into power level.
Each playable Greymanes member has a distinct skill set determined by their weapons:
Kliff MacDuff — sword and shield, bow, and the Axiom Bracelet with full elemental abilities and the deepest skill progression
A female companion — greatsword and flintlock pistol with quick-step mobility and aerial grapple techniques
A male companion — axe and wrist-mounted crossbow with incendiary bolts and a heavy combat style
