Overview
Octavius is a scholar at the Scholastone Institute, an academic institution within the Duchy of Hernand. He is characterized by a fervent, all-consuming desire to reach the Abyss, dedicating himself to research day and night in pursuit of this goal.
While undeniably talented, Octavius is self-centered and stubborn. Opinion within the Institute is divided between those who respect his brilliance and those who fear his obsession will ultimately be his undoing. His experiments play a central role in the Forbidden Knowledge questline of Chapter 4.
Location
Octavius can be found at the Scholastone Institute in the Hernand region. He is first encountered during the quest On the Right Path, where Dean Grundir introduces him to Kliff.
Role in the Story
On the Right Path
When Kliff arrives at the Scholastone Institute, Grundir introduces him to Octavius. The scholar is conducting experiments in the Institute's central plaza, which he believes will help him reach the Abyss. Though his methods are unconventional and his demeanor off-putting to some colleagues, the Dean permits his research to continue.
Gate to the Otherworld
In the quest Gate to the Otherworld (the 56th main quest), Octavius's experiments escalate dramatically. His work involves environmental puzzles in the Institute's underground areas, including inserting batteries into pillars and extracting an unstable core. These experiments culminate in the summoning of Tenebrum, a spectral entity from the Abyss. Kliff must fight Tenebrum in an aerial boss battle above the Scholastone Institute. Following this confrontation, Octavius disappears.
Aftermath
After Octavius's disappearance, Grundir reports a strange phenomenon at the Institute's spire, leading Kliff to investigate the Spire of the Stars. The consequences of Octavius's experiments continue to unfold throughout the remainder of Chapter 4.
The Tenebrum Portal Disaster
Octavius's central contribution to the Scholastone Institute is the construction of a working abyssal gate on Institute grounds. Where the Institute as a whole has poured generations of resources into the Abyss study, few of its scholars have ever actually set foot inside it; most lifetimes are spent observing from this side of the gate. Octavius rejects that arrangement and builds his own crude portal.
When Kliff arrives to help finish the apparatus, the experiment opens not to a controlled puzzle area but to a darker facet of the void called Tenebrum. Octavius refuses to shut the experiment down even as it goes wrong: "My work is almost complete. If I were to stop now, I cannot prove my hypothesis." The void does not immediately kill him; instead it pulls him through. Kliff is forced to fight the entity that comes out, a black-cloud creature that the Institute later catalogs as Tenebrum proper.
Spire of the Stars Outcome
Defeating Tenebrum triggers a second event atop Scholastone's Spire of the Stars. Kliff travels up the spire and finds Octavius one final time. The void did not kill him outright; it teleported him to the spire's apex and, by the time Kliff arrives, has aged him visibly. Two readings of the same encounter are supported by the dialogue: either the trip through the void compressed years of aging into seconds, or time itself moved differently on the other side and Octavius has been stranded at the top of the spire for what would feel to him like a much longer span.
Either reading places the encounter as one of the earliest in-story demonstrations that the Abyss can warp human bodies and timelines in ways the Institute has only theorised about. The spire encounter is also where Kliff first crosses paths with Gabriel Caliburn, who recognises Kliff in a way that will not make sense until much later in the campaign. From a Chapter 4 perspective the Caliburn line plays as a non sequitur; in retrospect it is the first concrete sign that the wider conspiracy already knows who Kliff is.
Connection to the Conspiracy
Octavius's role is small in the conspiracy that drives the main story, but the cascade he sets off is large. Without his portal, Kliff does not climb the spire; without the spire climb, Kliff does not encounter Gabriel Caliburn in the abyss during Chapter 4, and the Chapter 8 reveal that Caliburn already remembered him from this moment loses its anchor. Octavius is the unwilling lever that opens the chapter-spanning Caliburn arc.
Personality
Octavius is brilliant but deeply flawed. His talent as a researcher is recognized throughout the Institute, yet his self-centered nature and stubborn refusal to consider the dangers of his work alienate many of his peers. He is single-minded in his pursuit of the Abyss, often ignoring warnings and dismissing concerns from those around him. This obsessive drive ultimately leads to catastrophic results when his experiments open a doorway to forces beyond his control.
