Pearl Abyss has repeatedly emphasized that the main story following Kliff and the Greymanes represents only a "small percentage" of the total content available. The campaign drives players through the five regions of Pywel, but the vast majority of the game's systems, encounters, and rewards exist outside the critical path. The campaign can only be advanced while playing as Kliff, while Damiane and Oongka are available for all open-world activities.
The open world spans over 74 square kilometers of explorable terrain across the continent of Pywel. Pearl Abyss has stated the map is at least twice the size of Skyrim (approximately 37 km²) and comparable to Red Dead Redemption 2 (approximately 70-75 km²). Crossing the entire continent on horseback takes approximately two hours of continuous riding.
The five main regions (Hernand, Pailune, Demeniss, Delesyia, and the Crimson Desert) each contain their own towns, dungeons, faction conflicts, and environmental challenges. The entire world is seamless with no loading screens between regions, cities, interiors, or even the floating Abyss islands.
The bulk of Crimson Desert's playtime comes from non-campaign content. Pearl Abyss's PR Director reportedly spent over 50 hours engaging with side content during development without barely touching the main narrative.

Crimson Desert includes dozens of factions that act as significant actors in the plot. Pearl Abyss has described these factions as independent groups with their own agendas, conflicts, and questlines rather than simple reputation meters. Completing faction quests builds Contribution with that region and unlocks tangible gameplay rewards. Factions operate independently for each of the five regions, and the same faction may have different interests and allies depending on where the player encounters them.

Early hands-on previews from March 2026 were overwhelmingly positive. PC Gamer described Crimson Desert as "one of the most overwhelming, chaotic, madcap videogames I've ever played," praising its density and variety. GamesRadar and The Gamer praised the combat depth and open-world freedom. Press-Start highlighted the variety of activities available within even a short play session. Multiple outlets called the game a strong candidate for Game of the Year 2026.
The world is intentionally designed to distract players from the main quest. Dynamic events, NPC encounters, exploration rewards, and emergent gameplay pull attention away from the critical path at every turn. Pearl Abyss has described the game as a potential "forever game" for players who want to fully explore every corner of Pywel and engage with all of its systems.
Pearl Abyss chose not to release a public demo before launch, citing the complexity of creating a representative standalone section of such an interconnected open world. Press hands-on sessions were available at events like Gamescom 2025 and during the March 2026 preview embargo period, but these were curated four-to-six-hour sessions rather than freely available demos.
