Crowcaller continues the "Black and White" arc of Chapter 5 in Crimson Desert. Unidentified assailants have raided the Axiom Archive and kidnapped White Crow. Alustin, despite being injured in the attack, begs Kliff to pursue the invaders. The quest takes you through Hernand Castle's upper floors and into the Abyss for the first time since Chapter 4.
This quest introduces the Crowcaller, a feathered antagonist who orchestrated the raid. While quest #65 itself does not feature a full boss fight, the Crowcaller becomes a recurring adversary who you battle during Bloodwind (quest #67) and again in Toward the Nest (quest #69), where the definitive three-phase fight takes place. The name "Crowcaller" refers to his connection with crows, which he appears to command. His identity and motives become clearer over the next several quests as the Black and White arc unfolds.
Fast travel back to Hernand town if you are not already there. Make sure your equipment is in good shape and you have healing items stocked, since there are combat encounters ahead in the Abyss.
Go to Hernand Castle's inner courtyard, near the church entrance where the Kearush boss fight took place. A group of soldiers is gathered there. Approaching them triggers a cutscene revealing that "ghosts are loose in the castle." The soldiers describe mysterious figures moving through the upper floors, and Kliff volunteers to investigate.
Enter Hernand Castle and head upstairs. Turn right in the main hallway to find a staircase. Climb to the second floor and go through the wooden door on the left. You will find an Abyss Gate, a glowing yellow wall. Interact with it to teleport to the Abyss sky map. If the interaction prompt does not appear, try using the map's fast travel function instead. The gate takes you to a floating island in the Abyss, which serves as the staging area for the Axiom Archive.
You spawn on a floating island in the Abyss. Head forward toward the tall tower structure ahead. Enemies will appear along the path; defeat them as you go. These Abyss creatures drop decent loot, so clear them rather than running past if you want to stock up on materials. When you reach the tower, a cutscene triggers showing the Crowcaller and his followers. The quest completes after this cutscene.
The Crowcaller is the feathered man who orchestrated the attack on the Axiom Archive. He commands a flock of crows and uses them as both weapons and surveillance. White Crow's abduction is the central thread that drives the rest of the Black and White arc through to Toward the Nest. His connection to the Abyss runs deeper than most enemies encountered up to this point, and his combat abilities reflect that, combining swordsmanship with supernatural crow-based attacks.
You encounter the Crowcaller as a boss in two separate quests. The first battle occurs during the Bloodwind quest, where he has a single health bar and relatively straightforward attack patterns. The definitive encounter takes place at the end of Toward the Nest, where he has three full health bars and significantly more aggressive behavior. Both fights reward mastery of the parry and counter system.
Quest | Health Bars | Location | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | Moderate | ||
3 | Spire of Soaring | Hard |
The first encounter during Bloodwind serves as an introduction to the Crowcaller's fighting style. Once you head to the Church of West Demeniss, you need to defeat a group of guards to force the Crowcaller out. It is a tough one-phase fight, but blocking and striking during openings is sufficient to win.
The final encounter during Toward the Nest is considerably harder. The Crowcaller has three full health bars, and each phase makes his attack chains longer and introduces new patterns. He is faster and more aggressive, combining sword strikes with crow-summoning abilities. Detailed strategies for both encounters are covered below.
The Crowcaller uses a mix of melee sword combos, aerial dive-bombs, and ranged crow projectiles. His attack patterns escalate across three phases in the Toward the Nest encounter. Learning to read his tells is essential for survival.
Attack | Description | Counter |
|---|---|---|
Sword Combo | A rapid chain of sword slashes at close range. The number of strikes increases with each phase. | Parry with L1/LB on the first swing, then follow up with a quick combo during the opening. |
Aerial Dive-Bomb | Crosses swords near his chest, glows blue, then flies upward before diving at you. Phase 1 has one dive, Phase 2 has two consecutive dives, and Phase 3 has three. | Wait for the final midair dodge before rolling with Circle/B. In Phase 2 and 3, roll after each dive rather than trying to block. |
Crow Projectiles | Keeps distance and fires explosive crows at your position. Used more frequently in later phases. | Hold L1/LB to block incoming damage while closing the gap. Sidestep if your guard is low on stamina. |
Invulnerable Charge | In Phase 3, temporarily becomes invulnerable before rapidly dive-bombing three times in a row. | Focus entirely on evasion. Do not attempt to attack until the sequence ends. |
Ground Sweep | A wide horizontal slash aimed at tripping the player. Follows some sword combos. | Jump or dodge backward. If hit, recover quickly with a roll. |
The Crowcaller fights are built around the parry system. Perfectly timed blocks with L1/LB create openings for counter-attacks. Watch the Crowcaller's shoulders before each swing to read his telegraphs. Even in the later phases when his chains become longer, the telegraphs remain readable if you stay focused. Master the counter mechanic and you will find consistent windows to deal damage.
The most effective way to deal large chunks of damage is through grappling moves that build Stagger. Use the Lariat Follow-Up skill upgrade, which lets you perform the Lariat skill multiple times in succession to fill up the Crowcaller's Stagger bar quickly. Once the Stagger bar is full and he becomes stunned, use Turning Slash during the opening for heavy burst damage.
Blocking his melee attacks also provides small openings to grapple him to the ground and start building Stagger. This block-then-grapple loop is especially effective in Phase 1 while his patterns are still simple.
The Crowcaller is vulnerable to being tripped. Perform a roll dodge followed by an unarmed melee attack (Y/Triangle) to execute a leg sweep that consistently trips him. While he is on the ground, follow up with a ground stab for significant damage. You can animation-cancel the stab recovery and chain additional stabs with pump kicks (hold Y/Triangle) for extra bleed damage-over-time.
When the Crowcaller crosses his swords and glows blue, an aerial dive is incoming. Focus entirely on evasion during this sequence. In Phase 1, he dives once after a single midair dodge. In Phase 2, he performs two consecutive dives. In Phase 3, he enters an invulnerable state briefly before executing three rapid dive-bombs. Wait for the last midair dodge in each phase before rolling to reliably avoid the attack.
Bring plenty of cooked meals, not raw ingredients. Visit grocers and butchers in Hernand town or Demeniss before heading to the fight. For the Toward the Nest encounter, bring at least 100 Grilled Meat. Experienced players recommend stocking 200 or more for a comfortable margin. If you want to brute-force the fight, you can trade hits aggressively while out-healing his damage with a large food supply.
Item | Effect | Source |
|---|---|---|
Leather Helm of the Fallen Kingdom | +35% Turning Slash damage | Found in Hernand region |
Queen's Fang (Abyss Core) | Adds poison to stab attacks, high DPS over time | |
Plate Armor | High base defense | Merchant in Hernand |
Upgrade your armor and weapons to refinement level 4 or higher before this fight. The extra defense makes a noticeable difference. In the Skill Tree, invest in at least 4 Health upgrades and 4 Stamina upgrades.
Slot Abyss Cores into your weapons and armor at witch locations in the Witchwoods. Elowen the Witch can embed, extract, or craft Abyss Cores, and she can also create additional sockets in your gear. Some Cores grant abilities that augment your existing moves. The Queen's Fang from the Queen Spider boss is particularly effective here, as its venom stab is one of the highest DPS abilities available at this point in the story.
Lariat Follow-Up: Allows chaining Lariat grapples to rapidly fill the Stagger bar.
Turning Slash: A powerful burst damage skill to use during stagger openings.
Aerial Roll: You can learn this skill during the Crowcaller fight itself through the "watch and learn" mechanic. Keep an eye for the prompt.
Quest #65 (Crowcaller) does not award any direct item rewards. However, the definitive Crowcaller fight in Toward the Nest awards the following:
Reward | Type |
|---|---|
Blackwing Leather Armor | Body Armor |
Blackwing Mask | Head Armor |
Weapon |
The Tauria Curved Sword is one of the best weapons at this point in the game. Keep it equipped going into Chapter 6.
The Crowcaller's attack on the Axiom Archive marks a turning point in Chapter 5. Until this quest, the Black and White sub-chapter focused on political tensions in Hernand. The kidnapping of White Crow shifts the narrative toward the supernatural threat of the Abyss and the forces that dwell within it. Alustin's desperation in the aftermath of the raid underscores how important White Crow is to the wider storyline.
Over the course of the next several quests (The Crow's Warning, Bloodwind, Secret at the Church, and Toward the Nest), Kliff pursues the Crowcaller across Demeniss and eventually confronts him at the Spire of Soaring. The final confrontation during Toward the Nest involves solving the Crescent Skybridge puzzle before reaching the arena.
The Abyss Gate interaction can be finicky. Stand directly in front of the yellow wall and look for the prompt. If nothing appears, open your map and try the fast travel option.
The enemies in the Abyss section drop decent loot. Clear them rather than running past if you want to stock up on materials and silver.
Activate fast travel checkpoints before every boss encounter. If you die and need to resupply, you can warp back quickly.
For the Toward the Nest encounter, do not try to tank through the Crowcaller's combos. Each phase makes his chains longer, but his telegraphs stay readable if you watch his shoulders before each swing.
Cook your meat before the fight. Raw ingredients do not heal during combat. Visit grocers and butchers in town to stock up on prepared food.
If you are struggling with the Crescent Skybridge puzzle that precedes the final fight, see the dedicated How to Activate Crescent Skybridge guide.
