Divi-divi tree bark, harvested only from large trees. Used to produce tannin for leather tanning.
Tree Bark is harvested from large Divi-Divi Trees, which grow across the Foothills with the densest clusters in the central parts of the region. You strike the trunk with an axe to peel the bark; a Copper Axe or better chops faster and drains less stamina than the starting tool. A single Divi-Divi yields a generous batch per harvest, and old tree stumps left behind also give a small amount. Picking up your first piece unlocks the Tannin recipe automatically through the discovery system.

Tree Bark has a single confirmed use: brewing Tannin at the Alchemy Table. Tannin is the curing agent that turns rawhide into workable leather.

Tannin x1 | 2 Tree Bark + 1 Clay Bottle |
Tannin does not stop at one step. It feeds the wider leather pipeline, so a steady supply of Tree Bark underpins several mid-game upgrades:
Tree Bark plus a Clay Bottle makes Tannin.
Tannin plus rawhide is processed at the Tanning Rack into Tanned Leather. The rack must sit inside a Bonfire radius to work.
Tanned Leather then goes into the Bosun Backpack inventory upgrade and into leather armor such as the Tracker's Leathers.

Tree Bark is a gathering material, not a collectible. Carry an axe whenever you sail to the Foothills and strip every Divi-Divi Tree you pass; the bark is light at 0.1 weight and stacks to 30, so a single trip easily covers several batches of Tannin. If you would rather skip the chopping, the Merchant: Natural Resources on Tortuga stocks 50 at a time for Piastre each.
