Hunting

Initial version
Hunting in Windrose is the loop of killing wildlife for Meat, Rough Hide, and body-part drops that feed Cooking, Alchemy, and armor crafting. It is not a separate skill or talent tree. A kill on a boar uses the same weapon and the same stats as a kill on a Pirate Sergeant, and the same rules about Stamina and weapon scaling apply.
Animal | Biome | Drops |
|---|---|---|
Boar / Sow | Rough Hide (100% per kill), Boar Tusk, rare Boar Head trophy | |
Savage Boar | Later biomes | 5x Rough Hide per kill (per NeonLightsMedia farming guide) |
Dodo (Coastal / Azure) | Coastal Jungle | |
Rough Hide, Wolf Fang, rare Wolf Head trophy | ||
Goat | Foothills | Bezoar, rare Head of Mountain Goat Leader |
Crocodile Hide Piece, Crocodile Tail, rare Crocodile Head trophy | ||
Cursed Swamps | Standard crocodile drops plus Tainted Bile | |
Crab (small) | Coastal Jungle beaches |
Only Rough Hide (100% from boars and sows) and the Savage Boar 5-hide bonus are documented with hard drop numbers across sources. Other per-kill yields are variable and undocumented; treat as RNG within a loot table rather than a guaranteed count.
Two-handed swords or halberds are the community pick for Dodos, because sweeping attacks clear multiple birds per swing.
Melee weapons are preferred over firearms for most wildlife hunting, because Gunpowder is expensive and wildlife HP pools are low.
Blunderbusses are occasionally used against small Boar packs when a Dragonbreath Blunderbuss or Bone Shot load is on hand; this is a lateral choice, not an optimization.
Whistles are Legendary-rarity miscellaneous items that summon a short-duration pet. They do not substitute for direct combat but can distract hostile wildlife or add a temporary ally.
Boar Whistle: summons a pet boar for a short window.
Mighty Boar Whistle: summons a stronger pet boar. Same short-window framing; numerical advantages over the base whistle are not documented in public databases.
Crocodile Whistle: documented as existing in the item database; summon effect and duration are not cleanly documented in public sources at this time.
Resting at a Bonfire or waiting a few in-game hours resets wildlife spawns on nearby routes.
Ancient Ruins on starter islands are high-density spawn points where Boars and Dodos share territory; these are the most efficient dual-farm spots in the early game.
Coastal beaches in the Coastal Jungle are the dense Crab Meat farm. Watch for giant variants that can be lethal to low-level characters per multiple PC Gamer and Steam-community warnings.
Rough Hide: crafts the Sailor Backpack (5 Rough Hide + 2 Copper Ingot) and early leather armor.
Crocodile Hide: crafts the Quartermaster Backpack.
Wolf Fang: used in Elixir of Precision and Elixir of Concentration.
Bezoar: Concentration-line elixir ingredient.
Boar Tusk / Dodo Eggs: feed Rare and Epic tier cooking recipes (see Cooking).
No talent or attribute specifically boosts hunting yield or wildlife aggro management. Weapon scaling (Strength for halberds and greatswords, Agility for sabers, Precision for bows) decides kill speed, same as against any other enemy type.
