Sprinklers and fertilizers are the two main tools for farming automation and optimization in Starsand Island. Sprinklers handle watering automatically each morning, freeing up stamina for other tasks. Fertilizers speed up crop growth, increase harvest yield, or boost mutation chances. Both are unlocked through the Farmer profession with mentor Graminova at the Happiness Seed Shop.
Sprinklers are placed between crop tiles and water surrounding tiles automatically. They do not need to be manually activated. Once placed, they operate every day. Each upgrade tier requires the previous tier sprinkler as a crafting ingredient, forming an upgrade chain.
Sprinkler (basic): Junior Farmer certification. Blueprint: 1,500 coins from the Happiness Seed Shop. Materials: 5 Copper + 3 Iron Sheet. Crafted at Worktable II. Coverage: ~3x3 tiles.
Sprinkler II: Intermediate Farmer certification. Blueprint: 3,500 coins. Materials: 5 Iron Ingot + 3 Copper + 1 Sprinkler. Crafted at Worktable III. Coverage: ~5x5 tiles.
Sprinkler III: Senior Farmer certification. Blueprint: 10,000 coins. Materials: 5 Gold Ingot + 5 Iron Ingot + 1 Sprinkler II. Crafted at Worktable III. Coverage: ~7x7 tiles.
Buy sprinkler blueprints from the Happiness Seed Shop as soon as they become available at each certification level. They are essential for scaling up your farm.
Sprinkler → Sprinkler II → Sprinkler III. Each tier requires the previous tier as a crafting ingredient, so you upgrade rather than build from scratch.
Before unlocking sprinklers at Junior Farmer, you water crops manually with watering cans:
Wooden Watering Can: 5 Softwood. Apprentice Farmer.
Bronze Watering Can: 20 Copper + 1 Wooden Watering Can. Junior Farmer.
Cosmos Watering Can: Advanced materials + 1 Bronze Watering Can. Crafted at Worktable III.
The Watering Mastery food buff (from certain cooked recipes) increases the number of tiles watered per pour, making manual watering more efficient before you have sprinklers.
Fertilizers are applied to planted crops to speed up growth, increase yield, or boost mutation chances. They are purchased from Graminova at the Happiness Seed Shop or crafted using Fertilizer Boxes.
Ripening Fertilizer I: Apprentice Farmer. 15 coins (5-pack). Instantly advances growth by 8 hours.
Yield Fertilizer I: Apprentice Farmer. 120 coins (5-pack). Increases harvest yield by 50% at maturity.
Ripening Fertilizer II: Junior Farmer. 60 coins (5-pack). Instantly advances growth by 13 hours.
Yield Fertilizer II: Junior Farmer. 780 coins (5-pack). Increases harvest yield by 150% at maturity.
Ripening Fertilizer III: Intermediate Farmer. 180 coins (5-pack). Instantly advances growth by 25 hours.
Gmax Fertilizer III: Intermediate Farmer. 320 coins (5-pack). Increases Gmax mutation chance by 15%. Cannot be stacked with other fertilizers on the same plot.
Nutrient Soil IV: Senior Farmer. 250 coins (5-pack). Boosts flower pollination probability by 15%. Can be stacked with other fertilizers.
Plant seeds first, fertilizer is applied after planting, not before.
Equip the fertilizer in your hotbar, hover over the planted plot, and press interact to apply.
You can stack multiple fertilizers of the same type on one plot for greater effect.
Gmax Fertilizer III cannot be combined with other fertilizer types on the same plot.
For Gmax crops, only one plot in the 3x3 grid needs Gmax Fertilizer applied.
When you first become an Apprentice Farmer, Graminova gives you Ripening Fertilizer IV as a starting gift. Save this for a valuable crop. Do not waste it on Wheat or other cheap early crops.
Gmax (Gigantamax) crops are giant mutations of normal crops that grow on a 3x3 grid and yield a bounty of items when harvested.
Plant a 3x3 grid of the same seed type. All 9 tiles must be the same crop.
Apply Gmax Fertilizer III to at least one plot in the grid to increase the mutation chance by 15%.
The mutation is not guaranteed players have reported success on their first try and others on their 4th attempt.
If successful, the 3x3 grid merges into a single giant crop.
Harvest the Gmax crop with an Axe (multiple swings required), it cannot be harvested by hand.
Spring: Pineapple.
Summer: Watermelon.
Autumn: Pumpkin.
Winter: Winter Melon.
Growing a Gmax crop is required for the Intermediate Farmer certification exam.
Rather than buying fertilizer from the shop each time, you can craft Fertilizer Boxes that produce fertilizer using foraged and mined resources. Blueprints are purchased from the Happiness Seed Shop.
Fertilizer Box I: Apprentice Farmer. Blueprint: 400 coins. Worktable I.
Fertilizer Box II: Junior Farmer. Blueprint: 850 coins. Worktable I.
Fertilizer Box III: Intermediate Farmer. Blueprint: 1,500 coins. Worktable II.
Fertilizer Box IV: Senior Farmer. Blueprint: 2,500 coins. Worktable III.
Fertilizer Box V: Expert Farmer. Blueprint: 4,000 coins. Worktable III.
Auto Fertilizer Box: Senior Farmer. Crafted at Worktable II. Automatically applies fertilizer to nearby plots, the ultimate farming automation tool.
Fertilizers also play a role in flower cross-breeding. To cross-breed flowers:
Plant different flower colors with an empty plot between them.
Use Nutrient Soil IV to boost the pollination probability by 15%.
Possible new colors from cross-breeding include: brown, green, orange, pink, purple, and black (Sleep Lilies only).
Even a basic Sprinkler saves 10-15 stamina every morning. Prioritize getting Junior Farmer certification and your first sprinkler as early as possible.
Each sprinkler tier roughly doubles the coverage area. Plan your farm layout around the sprinkler tier you have. Plant in 3x3, 5x5, or 7x7 grids to match.
Yield Fertilizer provides the biggest economic return. A 50-150% yield boost on expensive crops like Dragon Fruit or Pumpkin pays for itself many times over.
Buying fertilizer from the shop is simpler than crafting it through Fertilizer Boxes. Save the crafting route for when you have excess materials and want to produce fertilizer in bulk.
Ripening Fertilizer stacks, applying multiple doses on the same crop advances growth by the combined hours, letting you harvest some crops the same day you plant them.
The Auto Fertilizer Box at Senior Farmer is the endgame goal for farming automation. Combined with sprinklers, it eliminates both watering and fertilizer application.
For Gmax crops, start with Pumpkin (Autumn), it has a relatively short grow time and high base value, making failed attempts less costly.
