Overview
Mushrooms are forageable items found primarily in the Moonlit Forest. They are one of the most useful resources in the game because they cost zero stamina to pick up, respawn daily, and feed into several valuable cooking recipes. A basic Mushroom variety also grows on the island surface, but the three specialized shroom types are exclusive to the forest.
Foraging mushrooms requires no tools and no profession rank. Walk up to a mushroom and interact with it to collect it instantly. Unlike mining or chopping, there is no stamina cost at all. This makes mushrooms the ultimate free resource during Moonlit Forest exploration runs.
Mushroom Types
Four mushroom varieties exist in Starsand Island. One grows on the island surface; the other three are exclusive to the Moonlit Forest.
Mushroom | Location | Description |
|---|---|---|
Mushroom | Island surface (various locations) | The basic mushroom found around Starsand Island. Common and easy to collect in bulk. Used in simple recipes like Grilled Mushrooms. |
Moondew Shroom | Moonlit Forest (all zones) | A forest-exclusive shroom that glows faintly. Used in Mushroom Soup and Grilled Mushroom Skewers. |
Mirthshroom | Moonlit Forest (all zones) | A blue-tinted mushroom unique to the forest. Used in Mirthshroom Soup, which grants the Creamy Seeds food buff. |
Sunveil Shroom | Moonlit Forest (all zones) | Found alongside other forest mushrooms. Used in Grilled Mushroom Skewers and as a crafting ingredient for Phosand (Bomb Arrow component). |
A fifth forageable plant, the Twilight Succulent, also grows in the Moonlit Forest alongside mushrooms. While not technically a mushroom, it is collected the same way (no stamina cost) and is valued as an NPC gift.
Where to Find Mushrooms
Island Surface
Regular Mushrooms spawn in grassy and wooded areas across Starsand Island. Check around trees, near rocks, and in shaded areas. They are not as densely packed as forest mushrooms, but they are accessible from Day 1 without needing to unlock the Moonlit Forest.
Moonlit Forest
All three specialized mushroom types (Moondew Shroom, Mirthshroom, and Sunveil Shroom) spawn throughout every zone of the Moonlit Forest. They appear along pathways, near camp sites, on cliff ledges, and around rock formations. The spawn density is high. On a single run through several zones, you can easily collect 20 to 30 mushrooms without going out of your way.
Mushrooms respawn daily. If you are running low, just sleep and return the next day for a fresh set. Combine mushroom gathering with your regular mining runs to make each forest trip doubly productive.
Cooking Recipes
Mushrooms are used in several cooking recipes. Some of these are among the most efficient stamina foods in the game, especially in the early-to-mid progression when ingredients are limited.
Recipe | Ingredients | Effect | Sell Price |
|---|---|---|---|
Grilled Mushrooms | 1x Mushroom (surface) | Basic stamina restoration | Low |
Mushroom Soup | 2x Moondew Shroom | +45 Energy | 54 coins |
Mirthshroom Soup | 2x Mirthshroom | +45 Energy, Creamy Seeds buff | 54 coins |
Grilled Mushroom Skewers | 1x Sunveil Shroom, 1x Moondew Shroom, 1x Mirthshroom, 1x Fine Salt | +86 Max HP | 166 coins |
Chicken Stewed With Mushrooms | 4x Fowl, 3x Mushroom, 1x Salt | +105 Energy, Battle Spirit buff | 248 coins |
Key Recipe Highlights
Mirthshroom Soup is one of the most important mushroom recipes because it grants the Creamy Seeds buff. This buff gives roughly a 5% chance per harvest to drop an Everlasting (Immortal) seed. Everlasting crops regrow indefinitely after each harvest, so farming Mirthshroom Soup pays dividends over the entire game. Eat it before every major harvest session.
Grilled Mushroom Skewers require all three forest mushroom types plus Fine Salt. The +86 Max HP bonus makes them one of the best HP-boosting foods available, excellent for boss preparation in the Moonlit Forest.
Chicken Stewed With Mushrooms uses surface Mushrooms (not forest ones) and grants the Battle Spirit buff, which increases combat damage. This is the go-to meal before boss fights against Crystalith, Glintortle, and the Ruin Guard.
Other Uses
NPC Gifts
Cooked mushroom dishes make solid NPC gifts. Grilled Mushrooms and Grilled Mushroom Skewers are liked by several characters. Mushroom-based meals are easy to mass-produce since the ingredients are free to collect, making them a cost-effective gifting option.
Crafting Material
Sunveil Shrooms are used at the Charcoal Kiln to produce Phosand, a key ingredient for crafting Bomb Arrows at the Ammo Maker. Bomb Arrows are essential for the Glintortle and Ruin Guard boss fights. The recipe is Coal + Sunveil Shroom = Phosand. Always keep a stockpile of Sunveil Shrooms for arrow production.
Selling for Profit
Raw mushrooms have low sell value, but cooking them into Mushroom Soup or Grilled Mushroom Skewers significantly increases their worth. Mushroom Soup sells for 54 coins from two free ingredients. Grilled Mushroom Skewers sell for 166 coins. Since the mushrooms cost nothing to gather, the profit margin is effectively 100%. This makes mushroom cooking one of the best early-game income strategies.
Reishi Mushroom (Farmable)
The Reishi Mushroom is a separate crop that can be grown in a Planting Box on your farm. It is not a foraged item. Unlocked at Senior Farmer rank, Reishi Mushroom seeds cost 400 coins and take 5 days 18 hours to grow. Reishi Mushroom grows in Spring and Autumn. Despite the name, it functions as a planted crop and follows normal farming rules (requires watering, has a growth timer).
Tips
Grab every mushroom you see. They cost zero stamina, respawn daily, and have multiple high-value uses. There is never a reason to walk past one.
Prioritize Mirthshrooms. The Creamy Seeds buff from Mirthshroom Soup is one of the most valuable buffs in the game. Stockpile Mirthshrooms and cook them in batches.
Keep Sunveil Shrooms for Phosand. Do not sell or cook all your Sunveil Shrooms. You need them for Bomb Arrow production, which is essential for Moonlit Forest boss fights.
Cook in bulk. Since cooking takes real in-game time, prepare 10+ servings of Mushroom Soup or Mirthshroom Soup at once using multiple Campfires running in parallel.
Combine foraging with mining runs. When you teleport to a Moonweaver camp for a mining run, collect all nearby mushrooms along the way. You will naturally accumulate large quantities without dedicating separate trips to foraging.
Mushroom Soup is great early-game food. At +45 Energy from two free ingredients, it is one of the most stamina-efficient meals available before you have a developed farm.
