Piplup is a Water-type Pokemon in Pokemon Pokopia, classified as the Penguin Pokemon (Dex #128). Piplup is a proud little Pokemon that has a hard time accepting food from people, but it is loyal to those it trusts. Piplup is the first stage in a three-member family that includes Prinplup (Dex #129) and Empoleon (Dex #130). While there is no evolution mechanic in Pokopia, all three can be found independently across different habitats. Piplup carries the Water specialty, making it a helpful partner for watering plants and maintaining crops.
Piplup is found at the Hydrated Yellow Tall Grass habitat. This is a specific variant of the Yellow Tall Grass habitat that requires water tiles nearby.
A patch of yellow tall grass that is kept moist by adjacent water tiles. This habitat attracts Water-type Pokemon that prefer damp, marshy conditions.
Item | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Yellow Tall Grass | 4 | Grown using Leafage on yellow soil |
Water (tiles) | 2 | At least 2 grass tiles must touch a freshwater source |
Piplup is a Common visitor at this habitat. It is available during all times of day (Dawn, Day, Dusk, Night) and in all weather conditions (Sunny, Cloudy, Rainy). Other Pokemon at this habitat include Azurill (Common), Marill (Rare), and Prinplup (Rare).
The Hydrated Yellow Tall Grass habitat is most commonly found near Bleak Beach, where yellow soil patches are available near the entrance. You need Leafage (unlocked after befriending Bulbasaur) to grow Yellow Tall Grass, and the grass tiles must be adjacent to a freshwater source to create the Hydrated variant.
Creating the Hydrated Yellow Tall Grass habitat requires a few steps:
Unlock Leafage: You must have befriended Bulbasaur earlier in the game to use the Leafage ability.
Find Yellow Soil: Look for pale-yellow dirt patches near the Bleak Beach entrance.
Create the Patch: Use Leafage on four connected yellow soil tiles. They can be arranged in a line or L-shape.
Add Water: Make sure at least two of the grass tiles are touching a freshwater source. Do not build too close to the ocean, or you will create a Seaside Tall Grass habitat instead, which attracts Slowpoke rather than Piplup.
After creating the Hydrated Yellow Tall Grass habitat with the correct water placement, Piplup will appear as a Common visitor. Walk up to it and interact to befriend it.
Piplup has the Water specialty. Pokemon with this specialty can spray water on nearby fields and plants. This is essential for keeping crops watered, maintaining flower beds, and creating additional Hydrated grass habitats to attract more Water-type Pokemon. Piplup shares this specialty with other Water-types like Wingull and Squirtle.

"Because it is very proud, it hates accepting food from people. Its thick down guards it from cold."
Piplup belongs to a three-stage family alongside Prinplup (Dex #129) and Empoleon (Dex #130). In the main Pokemon series, Piplup evolves into Prinplup at level 16, and Prinplup evolves into Empoleon at level 36. In Pokopia, there is no evolution mechanic, so each member must be found at its own habitat independently. Piplup and Prinplup both appear at the Hydrated Yellow Tall Grass habitat, with Piplup as Common and Prinplup as Rare.
Make sure you use freshwater tiles, not ocean water, when building Piplup's habitat. Ocean water creates a Seaside Tall Grass habitat instead, which attracts Slowpoke.
Piplup is one of the most popular Pokemon in the franchise, and it is relatively easy to find in Pokopia as a Common visitor.
The Hydrated Yellow Tall Grass habitat also attracts Azurill, Marill, and Prinplup, so building it is an efficient way to encounter multiple Water-type Pokemon.
If you need a Water Pokemon for watering plants and crops, Piplup is a great early option thanks to its Common rarity.
