Overview
Pokemon Pokopia is available in two formats: a physical edition and a digital edition. Unlike many modern games, there is no Deluxe Edition, Special Edition, or Season Pass available. Both editions cost the same price and contain identical content.
Available Editions
Edition | Price | Format | Key Detail |
|---|---|---|---|
Physical Edition | $69.99 USD | Case with Game-Key Card | Requires internet download; cartridge needed in console to play |
Digital Edition | $69.99 USD | Nintendo eShop download | No physical cartridge required; may require Virtual Game Card for multiple Switch 2 systems |

Physical Edition Details
The physical edition comes with a case and a Game-Key Card. This is a departure from traditional game cartridges. The Game-Key Card does not contain the game data itself; instead, it provides a code that initiates a download. However, you still need to have the Game-Key Card inserted in your console to play the game after downloading. Pokemon Pokopia is the first Pokemon game to use this game-key card format for physical distribution. This reflects the Nintendo Switch 2's hardware changes.
Digital Edition Details
The digital edition is downloaded directly from the Nintendo eShop. No physical card is required. If you own multiple Nintendo Switch 2 consoles, you may need to load a Virtual Game Card to play on secondary systems.
No Deluxe or Special Edition
Pokemon Pokopia does not have a Deluxe Edition, Collector's Edition, or any other premium version. The game does not have any alternate editions or versions. Both the physical and digital editions contain the same content.
Pre-Order and Early Purchase Bonus
All early purchasers of either the physical or digital edition receive a Ditto Rug in-game item. The Ditto Rug is a decorative furniture item that can be placed inside your houses for interior customization. This bonus is redeemable through the Mystery Gift feature by selecting "Get via Internet" from the Pokemon Center PC.
Redemption details:
You must play for approximately 30 minutes before the Mystery Gift feature becomes available.
The Ditto Rug must be claimed by January 31, 2027.
Your Nintendo Switch 2 must be connected to the internet, and your user profile must be linked to a Nintendo Account.
A paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to redeem this bonus.
The item can only be redeemed once per account.
The Ditto Rug is also obtainable through normal gameplay, so missing the deadline does not lock you out permanently.
Retailer-Specific Pre-Order Bonuses
In addition to the universal Ditto Rug bonus, several retailers offered exclusive pre-order incentives. These varied by region and included both physical merchandise and in-game digital items.

Game-Key Card Format
Pokemon Pokopia is the first Pokemon title to ship in Nintendo's new Game-Key Card format for the Nintendo Switch 2. Unlike traditional cartridges that store the full game data on a physical chip, the Game-Key Card is a small card containing a unique download code. When inserted into the console, it initiates a full game download over the internet.
Key requirements for the Game-Key Card:
A full game download via the internet is required on first use.
The Game-Key Card must be inserted while downloading the game and each time the game is launched.
A microSD Express card may be required for additional storage (sold separately).
At least 10 GB of free space is needed on the console. Additional space may be required for future update data.
The download size is approximately 6.2 GB.
The physical package includes a standard Nintendo Switch 2 case with cover art, the Game-Key Card itself, and a quick start guide. Despite requiring a download, the Game-Key Card still functions as a form of physical ownership. You must have the card inserted to play, similar to how traditional cartridges work.

Platform Availability
Pokemon Pokopia is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. There is no Nintendo Switch 1 version. Players on the original Switch can only access the game through GameShare with a Switch 2 owner, which allows limited participation but restricts many features.
GameShare
The GameShare feature allows Switch 2 owners to share the game for free with another console. GameShare is exclusively available in Palette Town and comes in two forms: local wireless (compatible with both Switch 1 and Switch 2) and online via GameChat (Switch 2 only). GameShare participants have limited functionality and cannot build, craft, use the PC, enter houses, or play mini games.
