Sequences
August 26, 2026 at 01:35 PM
Added the in-game Sequence Advancement route (menu, Sequence quests) and the 400 potion-digestion threshold that pays out talent points, skill points and History Fragments
Sequences are the 10-rung progression ladder that runs from Sequence 9 (entry) to Sequence 0 (god-tier) on every Pathway. A Beyonder starts at Sequence 9 and advances upward by drinking the next potion and surviving its digestion. Counter-intuitively, a higher Sequence number is a lower power tier: Sequence 9 is the bottom rung, Sequence 0 is the apex.
Across the full roster the numbers are fixed: 22 Pathways with 10 Sequences each, 220 Sequences in total. SPARK NEXA has described each of the 220 as a distinct way of living the role rather than a cosmetic tier, because Sequence advancement is gated on the Acting Method rather than on grinding. Asked about the top of the ladder, the studio's own answer was that nobody should ask how to become a god yet, because it is a technology the development team has not worked out.
The system originates with the source material and is preserved in the game. What differs is reach: the novel documents all 220 rungs, while the live client has opened only the bottom of the ladder.
Beyonder Sequences are grouped into named power bands. The names give a quick read on a Beyonder's relative power level without needing to memorise every Sequence-by-Sequence Archetype name.
Sequence 9 to 7 (Low Sequences): freshly minted Beyonders. Most named NPCs the player meets in Tingen sit here. Manageable sanity cost; the Sequence 7 ritual ceremony is a meaningful but routinely-survivable ordeal.
Sequence 6 to 4 (Mid-to-High Sequences): seasoned operatives. The bulk of Nighthawk field officers sit here. Sanity costs spike. Higher-tier abilities require Sequence-tier rituals between potion digestions.
Sequence 4 to 1 (Demigods): operate in the Gray Fog and the high-density mysticism districts. Power tier becomes mythological. NPCs of this tier are setpiece bosses or quest-givers, not random encounters. Official character copy places Audrey Hall here, at Sequence 3 on the Visionary line.
Sequence 0 (True Gods): in the source material, the named gods of the world, one per Pathway. The game's own site publishes all 22 deity names with their mottos; in play they appear only in cinematics, Mr. Fool visions, and apex-tier story moments.
Advancing from one Sequence to the next requires four conditions:
1. Possess a brewed Beyonder potion of the next Sequence on the player's current Pathway. See Potions and Ingredients for the ingredient and brewing process.
2. Reach the Acting Method threshold for the current Sequence's Archetype. The player must roleplay their current Sequence well enough that the next potion does not destabilise them.
3. Hit minimum sanity for the ceremony. Drink the potion at low sanity and the digestion punishes the player heavily; some Sequences are unsafe to attempt below the Calm band.
4. Complete the Sequence-specific advancement ritual. Each Pathway has a thematic ritual (the Seer performs a divination at midnight; the Apprentice cracks a sealed lock at a hidden gate; the Spectator reads the dreams of a sleeping crowd). Story content surfaces these rituals as quest objectives.
Digestion is paced rather than instant. On the first day of the live schedule, potion digestion is capped at 20 percent, so the ceremony is a multi-session process rather than something completed the moment the potion is brewed. The same day-one promotion item that carries a character to Sequence 9 also upgrades combat skills and puppet skills.
Community accounts of the opening weeks describe materials for the lowest advancements as relatively easy to gather from instances and quest rewards around Tingen, with higher-Sequence materials pushing players into more dangerous areas and group content. Those accounts also say advancement rituals for the higher Sequences are being implemented progressively as those Sequences open, rather than shipping all at once.
The studio published the route through the interface in a launch-week reminder. Advancement is reached from the main menu, bound to the escape key, under a Sequence Advancement (序列晋升) entry. Inside it sits a list of Sequence quests (序列任务), and the player picks whichever ones suit their character rather than working through a fixed order.
Digestion progress is also a reward track in its own right, not only a gate. Reaching 400 potion digestion (魔药消化度) unlocks a progress reward that the studio singled out as easy to miss. Its contents are progression currency rather than flavour items:
Talent points (天赋点), which feed the dual-talent structure described under Pathways.
Skill points (技能点数).
History Fragments (历史残页). These are distinct from the Lamp of History pull currency and from the Echo of History upgrade material, both covered under Monetization.
Because the reward sits behind a claim step rather than paying out automatically, a character can pass the threshold and leave the talent and skill points sitting unclaimed.
Each Sequence advancement unlocks new Beyonder abilities, expands the maximum sanity pool, raises gear-tier eligibility, and shifts the player's Acting Method Archetype to the new Sequence's role. The new Archetype's behaviours score Acting; the previous Archetype no longer does. A Beyonder's identity is the Archetype they perform, and changing Sequences changes the role.
Visual changes are also part of the system. A Sequence 8 Clown looks different from a Sequence 9 Seer: outfits shift toward circus-flavoured silks, the character's gait carries more theatrical bounce, and the in-game weapon prop changes from a divination cane to a juggler's set. Players can toggle the visual change off if they prefer to keep their Sequence 9 look, but the Archetype and ability changes are mechanical and cannot be opted out of.
A Beyonder who fails the next-Sequence ritual or who suffers severe sanity loss can regress: drop a Sequence rank, lose access to the higher-tier abilities, and have to rebuild Acting before re-attempting. Regression is a mechanic, not a permadeath: the game keeps the player's progression history and re-attempting the ceremony rewards a slight Acting bonus from the second attempt.
Severe failures (drink at zero sanity, attempt without a ritual completed, attempt the wrong-Pathway potion) can transform the character into a Beyonder Monster, the worst-case state. This is a story-locked, recoverable corruption. See Sanity System for the madness-state details.
The launch build's Sequence ceiling has not been published. What is documented is the opening schedule: the first Sequence advancement lands on day one, taking a character to Sequence 9, and potion digestion is capped at 20 percent that day. Nothing above Sequence 9 is confirmed reachable inside the documented ten-day opening window.
Figures for a launch cap circulate in community discussion, including screenshots of demigod-tier Sequence 3 and Sequence 4 character panels, but those are not confirmed as reached content and may be interface previews rather than progression. Treat any specific launch cap number as unverified until the studio publishes one.
Pre-launch developer framing around May 2026 pointed at the mid Sequences as the eventual ceiling for the public build, which would sit well above the Crimson Test's ceiling and well below the demigod tiers. That framing was never confirmed against the shipped client. Sequence 0 god-tier remains NPC and cinematic territory for the canonical Klein Moretti and the world's other Sequence 0 deities.
For historical reference. The February 2026 Crimson Test, a PC-only closed test, capped progression at the lower three Sequences for each playable Pathway. Published Sequence-by-Sequence reach detail from that build covered three Pathways:
Seer Pathway: Sequence 9 Seer, Sequence 8 Clown, Sequence 7 Magician.
Apprentice Pathway: Sequence 9 Apprentice, Sequence 8 Trickmaster.
Spectator Pathway: Sequence 9 Spectator, Sequence 8 Telepathist, Sequence 7 Psychiatrist.
That test's client and its data do not carry into the live game: beta accounts were not migrated, and players who took part were asked to uninstall the old client and clear its data before installing the launch build.
Higher-Sequence bosses are planned for future updates on top of the existing raid and world-boss ladder, including Sequence 4-tier and higher world bosses and raid antagonists. Boss-tier expansion is decoupled from the player Sequence cap: a Sequence 4 boss can appear in the world while players remain at the current ceiling, with the encounter scaled to require a full raid composition rather than matching player power tier.
The studio has described a multi-year live-service plan to roll the story out over time, intended eventually to cover the entire original web novel arc. Sequence cap raises, Pathway additions, and boss-tier expansions are all expected to roll out across that window rather than in a single step.
